This is by far the best thread I've found yet
I think that's what I said when I first came across it! And I'm still saying it ...

Some awesome songs there on your list. I love seeing the inclusion of Hawkmoon 269 - I've fallen heaps for that song lately, the 18 December 1989 performance in Amsterdam is just incredible. Slow Dancing ... oh, the full band version of that in Providence, 31 October 2001, is STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL, and ... yeah, some incredible songs on that list. A Sort Of Homecoming! Gah, AMAZING! Salomé - forget the Extended Dance Remix, the original's incredible. Gone = one of the best songs ever made. Oh, I could go on forever myself! Definitely the greatest live band of all time - what they do live is so far beyond what most bands could ever dream of doing!

Back in high school, my whole world revolved around U2. I played guitar in a U2 'cover band'. Our best songs were Sunday Bloody Sunday, Pride, 11 o'clock tick tock, I will follow, With or without you, and Where the streets have no name...
YOU JUST SAID 11 O'CLOCK TICK TOCK! My love for that song is insanely large, and I play it too. Such fun! My signature's a shot of Edge playing it during the Red Rocks concert. And WOW, you were in a cover band! Awesome! I've always wanted to start one at my school, but I don't think anyone else is keen ... oh well.

What two concerts did you go to?

They definitely had a huge impact on my life...
Mine too. My life might as well revolve around them.

Yep, our cover band knew about 10 songs only, and they were all U2...:)

We did write one song, though...called it 'War'

I saw the Joshua Tree tour in Toronto 1987, and Popmart in Toronto 1997...

Hey, maybe we can start up a new U2 cover band! Any drummers out there?

~peace~

Hey Kel:wave:
You played in a band?? That is awesome! My son is 15 and he started writing music reviews for the local paper at 13. It is pretty weird getting calls from various labels to speak with him regarding tickets to concerts etc.. (he even got me Shania Twain tickets but that is for another thread entirely! Like I said earlier - that is when you KNOW your OOOOOLLLLLLDDD!!)

He took guitar and decided he would be much better at writing about it!

All I want is you is one of my favorites tooooo! Man I just cannot pick one...depends on the mood. They don't just "sing" about things.....they set precedence!
Hey Flynmonkie! ;)

Shania grew up about 2 hours north of me! (Not a fan, though)

(And you're only as old as you feel! :) )

My plan is to play "All I want is you" to my bride at our wedding...(if I ever get married!)

I know a couple who had "All I want is you" played at their wedding by a cover band, and it really fitted well! I was crying even more!

Did you make it to either of the Melbourne concerts? The sudden change in the band from Lovetown to ZooTV was so radical it's not funny, and I've heard so much speculation on why ... but it all has to go down to the Fly goggles!

As much as i would love to say yes, i would be lying if i did, i know a lot of people who went. I was so angry and bitter that i didn't go, still am! You never know how painful it is until you miss a show! Though the people i know who did go to the Zootv show said they did rehearsals through the whole day in Melbourne.

Thanks for the quote about his fly goggles, but yeah.. as you said, it was quite radical!. You can listen to difference between albums and tours but it's something you had to be there at the time to experience. people were in total shock when Achtung baby arrived.

For that also, I believe there is no other band in the world now or ever been who is more talented than U2! there is no other band that comes close to the quality of U2. U2 take their fans on roller coaster ride, something others haven't done, to the extent of U2. I know i'm a snob, but U2 can easily sell out more concert tickets than any other Band, and I'm willing to bet money on it!! hehe. :)

Oh.. And Axver Have you heard the Popmart Brisbane concert? It's in the bunch of shows i downloaded a few weeks ago, plus i found the triple M interview which is from RTC.com.

Anyone who is interested in downloading "Bit torrent" there is a music forum which has even more users than this forum! and they heaps of U2 bit torrents. Most of the people there are U2 fans.

http://www.sharingthegroove.org/msgboard/showthread.php?s=&threadid=23722

I'm currently downloading the Rotterdam 15-06-92 DVD which is an audience cam with soundboard sound it's supposed to be excellent! here are some pics.

I finished downloading a very rare Zooropa Frankfurt, Germany 02 June 1993 SHN and the Quality is ****ING BRILIANT! It sounds nearly as good as the Dublin show, but don't know if it's a soundboard or Audience. But it kicks ***!

Those bit torrents chew up heaps of bandwidth though because it takes 3 minutes to load a web page.

Now as you can see, i am becoming an obsessed fan, and my friends are getting sick of me talking about Bono. hehe

BTW how are you Indigo tree? haven't seen you here for a while.

I haven't contributed anything yet. Shock horror!! I've only got the two Best of CD's which I have on often, but I'm not a fan as much as Axver evidently is. I read the book "Walk On" by Steve Stockman a couple of years ago and that helped me to be hooked. My list of favourites includes:
- I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For (Rattle & Hum version with the gospel choir)
- With or Without You
- All I Want is You
- One
- Until the End of the World
- Beautiful Day
- Walk On

plus a heap of others that probably have been mentioned a thousand times.

In terms of dislike songs, I don't really know. There were some that at first took me a while to like, but after a few listens they grew on me.

Wow, lotsa noobs! Hiya everyone!

Janine- Well I was gone for a few days in San Diego, and I've basically just been lurking since I've got back. I'm doin' pretty good tho'.:)

Cool! You got October! My fav is Gloria too, but I also really love Stranger in A Strange Land and October.

Sad Astronaut- Yeah, there are only three I don't like:

-Fire
-Miami
-The Playboy Mansion.

They never really stuck with me. I haven't played them much though, so I'm thinkin' I should give 'em more of a chance.

Wow, lots of concert discussion going on....Never been to one, but will. I really wish I was born sooner so I could have attend the JT concerts, but I was unfortunatly in diapers then, blissfully unaware of U2.

I would personally love to dance to All I Want Is You at my wedding..Its the perfect song......

Anyway, I don't know if anybody new this, but I just wanted to point out something interesting I discovered a few days ago...
Did you guys know that on the cover of All That You Can't Leave Behind, the gate number in the airport J33-3 is supposed to be a biblical reference to Jerimiah 33:3? It reads :"Call to me, and I will answer you; I will tell you things great beyond your reach of knowledge."
I just found out a couple of days ago at a U2 mb, and I thought it was really cool. Those guys are so clever....

You know what's infuriating? About two hours ago, I wrote a really long reply, then the whole site died on me! I normally copy long posts before making them, and so of course, the one time I didn't, things went down. Gah! I'll get back to this later ... sigh ...

Good to see you are doing well Indigo tree. Im just about to put on the San Diego show :) And as for Jerimiah 33:3 i had that on my sig a few months ago, there was a bit of didcusion that when the Album first come out. I don't know if it was Bono's idea, but it's a good verse.

Axver tell me about. I did a lengthy post on the other thread, but as i posted the thread disappeared, but I'm Glad a moderator found and removed it anyway. This is part of the reason why i voted to keep this a Christian only forum, to keep the others out {shudders}.

UM.. A couple, as for "daddy's gonna pay for your crashed car" i love the live version! though the Album version is a little boring. My least favorites are.

"Try in to throw your arms around the world"
"MIAMI MY MAMMY"
"Baby face" And "60 seconds in kingdom come" a song that never went anywhere.

I just listened to "with or without you" from Tokyo 1993-12-10 And quite frankly this is the best live version i have ever heard! (apart from R&H) I love the transition from lemon, and it has a different drum beat. It's a very trippy sort of version.

As for that thread, I've known people who have gone out of their way just to tell me how much they hate the Band!. I just say to them in my (sweetest voice) You have no idea what you are talking about, i have no respect for your worthless opinion. So get over it and shut up. {shudders}

Alright, this might take a few replies. Sorry folks.

I can confirm it was Bono's idea. I seem to recall seeing the undoctored photo, and it doesn't have J33-3. I do know Bono wanted the photo edited to include it, there's a quote out there.

I really want Cartridge's post on this thread deleted, because every time I see it, I just get all angry again because it's so WRONG. On that other thread, I did a thorough rebuttal of just about all he said and now I wish I'd saved it. I'm sick of having to destroy people's misconceptions about U2. They just don't have a clue sometimes.

As for that thread, I've known people who have gone out of their way just to tell me how much they hate the Band!. I just say to them in my (sweetest voice) You have no idea what you are talking about, i have no respect for your worthless opinion. So get over it and shut up. {shudders}
Yep, exactly. If anyone took any kind of reasonable look at U2, they'd realise they're such a fantastic bunch of blokes making some of the most awesome music there is. I reckon the fact people go out of their way to hate U2 tells you just how well the band's making their point. They've even had death threats over specific songs! These guys have made one huge impact.

Alright, on the topic of bad songs ...

Daddy's Gonna Pay: Took me a long time to get into, but then I saw it live, and WOW. I love this song now. Cool meaning and fun speculation, too.
Elvis Presley And America: Doesn't seem spectacular on the surface, but when you realise Bono's making up lyrics on the spot and it was done in a single take, it's quite amazing.

What don't I like?
The Refugee: Just can't get into it.
Red Light: It's beyond me why this made War and A Celebration didn't.
Miami: What in the world were they thinking? I'm starting to appreciate some live performances, especially the transition into Bullet, but it's an awful song. "Miami, my mammy"?! It's like dodgy lyrics Bono would do over the top of a song as something temporary, just to get a feel, and then come back and revise it. The band's said Pop is incomplete, and while I don't think much of it is, this is definitely an incomplete part.
The Playboy Mansion, If You Wear That Velvet Dress and In A Little While: Got to really be in the mood to enjoy these songs.
I can't really get into Trip Through Your Wires, either. Used to like it more than I do now.

Songs I didn't like but now do.
I Fall Down: Former reaction - *snooze!* Current reaction - Not a bad song, worked particularly well live in its later years (as in 1983-84 performances were better than 1981-82 ones).
In God's Country: What can I say? This is an awesome song live and it worked brilliantly with Exit.
Babyface: I used to HATE this song, but now I can appreciate what it's saying about the media turning people into voyeurs.
North And South Of The River: Two words - Omagh Tribute. *love*

I got to see U2 on the Boy tour, I also saw them for the War tour in 1983, and had 2nd row seats (thanks to world service) for the Popmart tour. 3 very special expierences.
I envy you so much! Pre-JT is my favourite era (trust my luck to be born just after it finished), and I adore 11 O'clock Tick Tock. Were you at one of the Boy era shows where they played it twice? I'm so annoyed I missed one of those!

As I recall, they only played it once. I had had a few pints by then, old or new to me it really doesnt matter. U2 are like the Beatles, who are going on their 3rd generation of fans. Least I know their music will probably live a good long time. The War tour really stands out, because Bono got down in the audience and brushed past me carrying the white flag. On a little different twist, I love Brian Eno, but I still think that Steve Lillywhite was their finest producer

Oh wow, that would've been so awesome! Some of Bono's escapades with the white flag are positively incredible, like using the flagpole to climb to the upper level of theatres and such. Yep, U2's music isn't going away - they're still at the top of their game after twenty-five years!

On a little different twist, I love Brian Eno, but I still think that Steve Lillywhite was their finest producer
Got to agree there, and now let's see what Lillywhite can do with the lads on the new album! I'm really looking forward to the results.

Speaking of the new album, this is something I discussed in the post I lost. I don't believe the November rumours for a second. Apparently a Canadian site is reporting September (7?), which is just saying exactly what I've been saying for the last month.

What we know;
- The new album is coming out this year or before spring 2005.
- It is best to release new albums before the holiday season, so I feel that debunks the idea of early 2005.
- A 25th anniversary book is going to be released. This should occur at the same time as the album.
- U2's 25th anniversary is NOT in 2005. Contrary to popular belief, U2's first release was not the Boy LP in 1980, but the U2:3 single in September 1979. Thus, U2's 25th anniversary is September 2004.

On the weight of that, I would like to make the following predictions;
- June/July/August sometime - Single (Probably July).
- September - Album and book.
- Late 2004/early 2005 - Promo gigs a la ATYCLB Promo Tour.
- February 2005 - Eighteen month long world tour starts in Miami. The length and start time is going by reports from a source that's a whole lot better than 'just a rumour' and past pattern implies a Miami start. Due to its nature, Popmart started in Las Vegas, The Joshua Tree started in Tempe for two reasons (1. the desert theme and 2. the governor of Arizona wanted to scrap MLK Day), Lovetown was a non-American tour, and prior tours don't count because they started elsewhere. This leaves us with Elevation and ZooTV - ZooTV was like what the sources say is coming, and Elevation had the potential to become that had they decided to play on (and probably would've if it weren't for 11 September, I feel). Both of those tours started in Miami, played two shows there, one in Charlotte, and then one in Atlanta. I reckon that's happening again. I'll see you lot at the Atlanta show and probably two of the others. Woohoo! (Well, if I can ...)

So yes. I got a bit sidetracked there, but there's my predictions. It's happening, and when it does happen, remember that Axver called it first!

I think you have hit the nail on the head, your knowledge of U2 is amazing. I used to study my bands that intensely back in the 80s, have started again. Being single again, I now have plenty of time. Im hoping for a new tour, I would really love to see them again, the tickets that the world service sends out are amazing.
