• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Here is the thing: I am not sure there is anyone like that, someone that can do both. For instance, I know inflections and grammar and such, but I do not know how to play/use the instruments that would be used for elven music. I assume that such instruments would be mainly woodwind and flutes. Though I play the Native American Flute, it only plays in minor keys, so unless we are composing an Elven dirge (there's an idea...), I would not be much use with the music.
Thinking about it, my idea is no good anyhow, since Elves would never sing dirges as they revere death almost as much as they revere death. Thus it would be more of a celebration song.

Well... we could do something a capella; it doesn't have to have instrumental accompaniment, though that would be nice.

Unfortunately, it will not work out. I tried to record some singing in Quenya yestereve and the recording sounds really bad. Half of the time you cannot hear my voice and since I did not compose any Quenya music for this, but was using "May It Be" (The lowest scaled song with Quenya), I was still straining. I just cannot sing high enough. My singing range is large, but nothing that high. Perhaps I will try reading a piece of Quenya and recording that. And then someone else can sing it using how I spoke it.

Okay- yes May it Be is only for sopranos as far as I'm concerned! That's a hard one! Try speaking it. Read Namarie to us or your poem for that matter! That would be really cool!
Actually, I would say any Alto worth her salt could easily handle May it Be.

I guess it's just hard for guys then :)
*Nods* I think it's just a little too high for a tenor to sing in its original octave, though I could see a bass being able to sing it an octave down...

I sing bass, and yes, I could do it an octave down, but it just does not sound totally right. I will try recording a reading of my poem.
No, you're right, it wouldn't be the same. We'll just wait to hear your poem, then.

Hmmm...I have composed music, some that I think is worthy; and I do know how to pronounce Quenya, and I know instruments...Let's see if I get inspired. I'm really thinking I want to set Galadriel's Farewell (from FOTR, Book II, Chapter 8 "Farewell to Lorien". Might give me an excuse to get a good computer microphone...But don't expect it immediately. I like to let ideas bounce around in my head for a while, then write, then polish--you know the drill.

Well, just let us know if/when you have anything written so we can see it!

Good news, Elven friends. I have done as suggested and recorded my voice speaking a Quenya poem that I previously posted in this thread. the only bad news is that I cannot upload it here, since I have no site to upload it to first. So I will email it to the four of you if you desire. All you need to do is send me an email via the CF utility and I will send you back the file.

The text of the reading will be as thus:
(Arwa Tyë)

Nan valin arwa tyë;
Nan senda arwa tyë.
Haryan lá caurë arwa tyë;
Haryan calassë arwa tyë.
Lá nan vanwa arwa tyë;
Hirnen ëalanya arwa tyë.
Lertan melë arwa tyë.
Lertan quetë anwa arwa tyë.
Tenyan cuina arwa tyë.
Tenyan varna arwa tyë;
Lá hossë lertar tulë pá nyë-
Arwa tyë.

It is here!
After spending an hour this morning finishing and typing up the text, the poem for the translation contest is finished.
Here is how this will work. I will post the text of what is to be translated in this thread. If you want to participate in the contest, please post in this thread that you are participating. You must post that you are participating before JANUARY 15! This is the only deadline for the contest. I will then wait until I receive the translations of everyone who stated they were taking part before judging them. The judging will be focused on: Order that they were received, Accuracy of the translation, and source used for translating. Basically, even if it is the last person to get me their translation who has the most accurate one, they win. I will announce when I have received all of the entries, thus ending the contest. The prize is 50 CF Blessings and perhaps I will create a medal-looking pic for you to put in your sig. (Sounds cheesy, but it was an award idea someone gave me.)

So here is what you should do, put down into simple steps:
1. Post in this thread that you are participating.
2. Get the text of the poem I will post.
3. Translate the text from Quenya to English.
4. PM me your translation. Please cite your translating resource in the PM!
5. Wait for the contest to end and me to judge them.

My next post will include the text for translation.

Yours in service,
Morvaltur
