  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

1 Kings Chapter 10

And all Solomon's drinking vessels were of gold, and all the vessels of the house of the forest were of pure gold.
Chapter 10 verse 21

So King Solomon exceeded all the kings of earth for riches and for wisdom.

you mean it sorta' knocked her through a loop?

The Queen of Sheba was "knocked out" by the wealth and wisdom of Solomon.

The Queen of Sheba felt it "took her breath away."

The Queen of Sheba was "stunned" when she saw the wealth and wisdom of Solomon.

There was no more spirit in her.
Chapter 10 verse 6

Brinny

It is a strange turn of phrase, but it just means that the Queen of Sheba was very impressed by the wealth and wisdon of Solomon.

Yeah, that must be what it means...sounds like she was stunned by all that she saw, and by Solomon's wisdom....speechless, maybe..

Rick357

I like your ideas of what the Queen of Sheba felt when she met the richest man in the world.

People say I was so shocked you could have knocked me over with a feather.

Someone might say when she heard the news she almost fell off her chair.

The house was so beautiful that she almost fainted with amazement.

The Queen of Sheba was so overwhelmed that she went weak at the knees.

There was no more spirit in her.
Chapter 10 verse 5

Yes Rick357 it is an unusual turn of phrase. I believe that the writer was reaching for a phrase that meant more than very impressed.

He could have written the Queen of Sheba was very very very impressed.

We are here every day studying the next chapter of the Bible. In each chapter of the Bible there is always something of interest to fasten on.

The First Book of Kings is a wonderful book. Solomon was the richest man in the world (Chapter 10 verse 23).

It has been a great pleasure reading about how he built the Temple in Jerusalem and even made the door hinges out of gold.

When it was completed the Temple in Jerusalem was one of the greatest wonders of the world.

Thanks for the welcome....the definitian of the word translated spirit in the verse has to do with breath, wind, and also mind....if we take that and go back to verse one we see this...
*[[1Ki 10:1]] KJV* And when the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon concerning the name of the LORD, she came to prove him with hard questions.

Notice she heard of his wealth and his wisdom...and seems to have not believed the reports of his excellance in both....so she pressed him with hard questions....but when she heard his answers and saw his wealth the unbelief was done away....in the same way most believers have a certain amount of unbelief about Gods love for them...or providance...or longsuffering....but when we see his answers and his riches we loose our unbelief.

Thank you for your comments about the Queen of Sheba. I heard the story of the Queen of Sheba as a boy. Its only a short story but for some reason it has always fascinated me. I love this quote from the Queen of Sheba.

The half was not told me.

1 Kings Chapter 11

Soloman had seven hundred wives, princesses, and threehundred concubines: and his wives turned away his heart.
Verse 3

When Soloman was old, his wives turned away his heart after other Gods.
Verse 4

And the Lord was angry with Solomon, because his heart was turned from the Lord God of Israel.
Verse 9

And the man Jeroboam was a mighty man of valour: and Solomon seeing the young man that he was industrious, he made him ruler over all the charge of the house of Joseph.
Verse 28

The prophet Ahijah told Jeroboam that God would give him 10 of the tribes of Israel. Jeroboam would take 10 tribes away from Solomon's son, because Solomon had worshiped other Gods in his old age.

Solomon sought therefore to kill Jeroboam. And Jeroboam arose, and fled into Egypt (Verse 40).

I believe that Verse 41 means that God took Solomons wisdom away, because he has worshiped other gods.

Solomon died after reigning over Israel for 40 years (Verse 42).

Rehoboam was the son of Solomon and took over as King of Israel (Verse 43).

This is a sad end to the life of Solomon. Solomon's reign had started so brightly. He built the wonderful Temple in Jerusalem. Solomon's wealth and wisdom had been known to all his neighbours.

But he took wives and concubines from other nations against God's commands (Verse 2). Then in verse 4 it says, that these wives turned Solomon's heart against God in his old age.

This a sad end to a reign that had started with such great promise in the early days.

Solomon had done lost his mind.

Chapter 11:

5 For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Zidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites.

6 And Solomon did evil in the sight of the Lord, and went not fully after the Lord, as did David his father.

7 Then did Solomon build an high place for Chemosh, the abomination of Moab, in the hill that is before Jerusalem, and for Molech, the abomination of the children of Ammon.

8 And likewise did he for all his strange wives, which burnt incense and sacrificed unto their gods.

Brinny,

How can the light that burned so brightly, suddenly burn so pale?
(This is a quote from a Simon and Garfunkel song "Bright Eyes")

Yes it seems that Solomon lost his wisdom in his old age.

Here is an interesting quote form verse 41.

And the rest of the acts of Solomon, and all that he did, and his wisdom, are they not written in the book the acts of Solomon?

Yet, for Solomon to marry all of those women, that God forbid him from, indicates he had no wisdom when he first had it in his heart to do this, and carried it out. By the time he was old, he was loooong gone from any semblance of fearing God. And fearing God is the beginning of wisdom. It is tragic that he had allowed himself to get on that slippery slope.

"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding." ~Proverbs 9:10

Brinny,

Am I allowed to ask if it was wise to have seven hundred wives, and three hundred concubines ?

Wisdom even from God can not change the heart...education, wealth, providance, blessings, Holy teaching and commands, not even our will, or Gods judgment can change the heart of man. It is only as we surrender and trust and rely on God to live through us that we can recieve a new heart...and that was not available untill the provision of calvery.
So it is that David threw himself completly on God but Soloman while desiring God...also seems to have had a part of his heart centered on himself...but a little leaven spreads till all is leavened....

*[[1Ki 11:4]] KJV* For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods: and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God, as was the heart of David his father.

Verse 3

Though the number is ridiculous the problem like Samson before him was the fact his desire ran to woman who where not of Gods covenant

What is notable, is that it is written that Solomon's heart was not right before God as his father David's was. This occurred loooong before he was old and steeped in idolatry of other gods, even to the extent of building temples for them.

*[[1Ki 12:8]] KJV* But he forsook the counsel of the old men, which they had given him, and consulted with the young men that were grown up with him, and which stood before him:

As a father we think our children will always take our council to heart...but as teens they tend to put more wieght with their friends opinions....so make sure you know who your kids are friends with....all that David had built lost with one dumb decision.

Yes Rick357 King David's heart was in the right place, but Solomon's faith was not as strong as his father's.
