In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Wow! What a horrendous and wicked thing Amnon did. Poor Tamar. There should've been consequences and justice waaaaay before Absalom got to Amnon.

Brinny it was very difficult to punish Amnon for the rape of his half sister Tamar, because David was King of Israel by this time. Amnon was the kings eldest son. Amnon was the Crown Prince. Amnon was first in line to the throne. David loved his son Amnon and could not find it in his heart to punish Amnon. So it was down to Absalom to get justice for his sisters rape. Absalom got Amnon drunk. While Amnon was drunk Absalom murdered Amnon.

Quite a story

THAT was a weakness of David's then, and marred his righteousness before God and man. His daughter needed justice and to have things set aright.....he sorely neglected that....

Brinny you are quite correct. King David showed weakness in not punishing Amnon for raping Tamar.

King David loved his sons. This weakness that David had for his sons, leads to a civil war in Israel later on in the story.

there are always consequences for upholding wickedness or being lax about it. His daughter's virginity was violated atrociously, and her father didn't even defend her honor or stand up for her....

I Samuel Chapter 26

Saul is hunting David as usual, this time with 3,000 men.

David slips into Saul's camp while they were asleep, and takes Saul's spear and Saul's cruise of water that was at his bolster.

David calls out to Saul from a hill, and shows the spear and the cruise of water to demonstrate that Saul's life was at David's mercy.

But that David would never touch the Lord's annointed.

It's kind of hilarious that David was able to sneak in and cut off a piece of Saul's robe (and Saul was wearing it and slept right through it), etc., wasn't it?

THIS is a tribute to David's character, that he didn't kill Saul. And THIS is a glimmer of why God called him the "apple of His eye", i suspect.

What also is hilarious is that even as Saul came into the wilderness seeking to kill David, David was watching him the whole time, and Saul nor his men knew it.

Brinny we must believe that God had his hand on David's shoulder all the while.

1 Samuel Chapter 27

David thinks that his luck will eventually run out. Saul was bound to catch him sooner or later. David thinks his best chance of safety is to go to live in an area ruled by the Philistines, where Saul cannot chase after him.

David moved with his 600 men to Gath. King Achish ruled the land. They took their families with them and David took his two wives Ahinoam and Abigail.

Achish gave David Ziklag to live in. From his base in Ziklag David smote the Geshurites, Gezrites and Amalekites. From these places David took sheep, oxen, asses and camels.

King Achish asked David who he had been fighting. David misled Achish and said he had been fighting in the south of Judah.

Achish believed that if David had fought the tribe of Judah, then David could not ever return to Israel. Achish liked the idea of David having to stay a servant of the Philistines.

Humour
I can see the funny side of this chapter. David takes refuge in the area called Gath. David believes he will be safe in Gath. from Saul who keeps chasing him. Goliath came from Gath. In Chapter 17 David had killed Goliath of Gath.

So having killed Goliath of Gath the champion of the Philistines, David then moves to Gath as a refuge when King Saul is closing in on him. It is surprising that the Philistines of Gath gave David a warm welcome under these circumstances.

that IS surprising that Gath would give David such a warm welcome....and maybe the thinking of King Achish is that now he has Israel's own champion on his side.

And yes, it seems David went to Gath because Saul was scared of the Philistines. Saul was one foolish man. Cuz now his own champion, David, was a possible weapon against his own self.

Oh the irony.

1 Samuel Chapter 28

The Philistines led by King Achish gathered their army together to attack Isreal.

It appeared at this time that David and his men were willing to fight alongside the Philistines against Saul.

Saul went in disguise to a woman who had a familiar spirt to find out how the battle would go.

The woman called up Samuel from the dead. It was bad news. Samuel told Saul the devastating news that he would be killed along with all his sons, and that the army of Isreal would be destroyed.

Saul collapsed instantly with weakness and fear. Saul knew he was going to lose, but there was no avoiding tomorrows battle with the invading Philistines.

do you think he knew David might be fighting against him? And if so, did this add to his fear?

He already knew that David was more than capable, and shown proof that David could'a killed him dead.

Who would he fear the most, do ya' think, the Philistines or David?

Brinny King Saul was told that he and all his sons would die tomorrow, and that the army of Israel would be defeated by the Philistines. Yes this was shocking news to be told indeed.

1 Samuel Chapter 29

It appeared that David was willing to fight alongside the Philistines against King Saul and Israel.

But this intension was never to be put to the test. The Princes of the Philistines did not trust David and refused to have David join them in battle.

Therefore King Achish sent David back to the land of the Philistines.

That might've been a blessing in disguise for David that God may have orchestrated on David's behalf....David might've made a HUGE and tragic mistake if he would've gone ahead with his intention...

Brinny

David was annointed to be the next king of Israel.

David nearly made a big mistake

Luckily the Princes of the Philistines objected to his presence on the battlefield and so David was sent back to land of the Philistines.

Thank GOD he was sent back!!!! God was working even through the Philistines to protect David from such a foolish thing he was gonna do.....

he could've never been king if he had fought against his own nation, etc.

Brinny you are 100% correct in your assessment of David's situation.

But was it all a bluff ?

HUMOUR
There is a strange irony in that the killer of Goliath of Gath, should then offer to fight alongside the King Achish of Gath against Israel. It is just possible that David could see the irony of the sitution, and knew all along that the Princes of the Philistines were always going to refuse to let him join the battle against Saul and Israel.

This is just my own idea. The Bible seems to suggest that David would have joined the battle against Saul and Israel. We can only guess as to what was going through David's mind as the big battle approached in Chapter 29.

The Amalekites kidnap David's wives

1 Samuel Chapter 30

The Princes of the Philistines did not trust David. Therefore King Achish sent David back to Ziklag. On his arrival at Ziklag he found it on fire and all the women had been kidnapped by Amalekites.

David and all his men wept. David's two wives Ahinoam and Abigail had both been taken away by the invading Amalekites.

His men considered stoning David for this disaster. His men had also lost all their sons and daughters.

i dunno, Saul might've just pushed David past his endurance and David lost it, so to speak. Can you imagine the stress that built up over all that time that David was fleeing Saul, and for nothing David did? David's heart may have been broken and his spirit crushed that the king he fought for, who was also his father in law, despised him to that degree and was intent on killing him?

Chapter 30 verse 6

Look how wise and kind David is...he gives the Egyptian (who must've appeared weak and very sickly, and possibly dying) water, and food before asking him anything. And then he finds out the Egyptian does NOT want to be returned to the Amalekite. Looks like David got a loyal friend for life here:

Verses 11-13

"And they found an Egyptian in the field, and brought him to David, and gave him bread, and he did eat; and they made him drink water; And they gave him a piece of a cake of figs, and two clusters of raisins: and when he had eaten, his spirit came again to him: for he had eaten no bread, nor drunk any water, three days and three nights. And David said unto him, To whom belongest thou? and whence art thou? And he said, I am a young man of Egypt, servant to an Amalekite; and my master left me, because three days agone I fell sick."
