  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Thank you for mentioning the turtle. It gave me the excuse to tell you about the story of my mother. My Mother became a born again Christian at the age of 14.

My father died 30 years ago. Father was a deacon, Sunday School teacher, and a very occasonal lay preacher when asked. He loved his little church and did open air preaching evey Sunday.

My mother had a great fear of going into hospital, and feared she would be badly treated by the nurses because she was old. It was her fondish wish that she should stay in her own home as long as it was at all possible.

Her wish was granted. And in the last 30 years she never spent a single night in a home or a hospital.

She did spent a few days in hospital, but only after she was dead. This is because I requested resusitation and her heart started beating again. But her heart stopped after an hour, when life support was withdrawn. The hospital doctor phoned me to say that she was brain dead and there was no hope of any improvement.

God bless you for being such a blessing to your mom...

Brinny do you think that the young Amalekite made a mistake in telling this story to David ?
2 Samuel 1 verse 10

It seems that the Amalekite was perhaps thinking he would get a reward? And yes, it was a fatal mistake of his to tell David.

2 Samuel Chapter 3

There was a long war between Judah and Israel. The side of David King of Judah gradually grew in strength.

Meanwhile David had six children with six different wives.

Abner was captain of the Host of Israel. Abner thought it was time to make peace with David. Abner met with David and made a peace deal with David and then set off for home.

The peace deal between Abner and David included the return of David's first wife Michal.

Joab was very senior in the army of David. Joab chased Abner and killed him as revenge for the death of his brother Asahel who was killed by Abner in Chapter 2 verse 23.

David was very upset that Abner was killed after terms of peace had been agreed. David gave Abner a very big funeral to show all the people that it was not David that had killed Abner after negotiating a peace deal.

2 Samuel Chapter 2

God told David and his men to move to Hebron and live there. The men of Hebron anointed David King over the House of Judah.

But Abner the Captain of Saul's host took Ish-bosheth a son of Saul and made him King of Israel.

There followed a long war between Judah and Israel.

David was a truly GREAT man. He rewarded those who gave Saul a burial. Even after Saul's death, he showed respect to Saul and the "office of king" for the sake of God, because God anointed Saul as king. This is another glimpse into perhaps why God called David the "apple of His eye".

Yes Brinny it says in tomorrows study (Chapter 4) that the Amalekite had gone to David expecting a reward. Bad move.

Yes Brinny David showed great respect for King Saul, after Saul had been killed by the Philistines.

2 Samuel Chapter 4

David was King of Israel. Saul's son Ish-bosheth was king of Israel.

They had been a war for a long time but gradually David was getting stronger.

Ish-bosheth had two captains brothers Baanah and Rechab.

After the death of army commander Abner, the two brothers Baanah and Rechab muredred Ish-bosheth.

They cut of King Ish-bosheth's head and took it to David for a reward.

Baanah and Rechab got the same reward as the Amalekite who killed King Saul - DEATH.

2 Samuel Chapter 4

The Story of Mephibosheth

Saul had a son called Jonathan. Jonathan had a son called Mephibosheth.

News spread that Saul and his sons had been killed by the Philistines.

The army of Israel was defeated and the Philistines were invading Israel.

When the nurse of Mephibosheth heard the news she panicked and ran.

As she fled in fear of the approaching Philistines she dropped the child.

In the fall the feet of Mephibosheth were damaged.

For the rest of his life Mephibosheth had lame feet.

2 Samuel 4 verse 4

In my opinion in theory at least Mephibosheth had a claim to the throne of Israel.
Mephibosheth would have been Saul's grandson.

Except that God chose and anointed David. God it seems, planned to stop Saul's lineage from being on the throne.

I think it would be fair to say that Baanah and Rechab showed poor judgement.

It boggles me mind why David took sooo many wives n' concubines....

what in the world is the difference between a wife and a concubine?

Brinny

The exact meaning of concubine is not clear. Maybe it meant different things to different people.

A concubine would be a woman cohabiting with a man of wealth, maybe a king.
The woman would not be his wife. The wife has a higher status than a concubine.
A concubine is like a second class wife. A bit like a man's mistress.

2 Samuel Chapter 6

David went to get the ark of God from the Philistines. They were to carry it back to Israel on a cart.

The cart was shaking about so Uzzah put out his had to steady the ark of God.

God struck Uzzah dead for touching the ark of God.

2 Samuel 6 verse 7

I have heard this story before. Many people find it hard to understand what exactly Uzzah did wrong. If something is shaking about on a cart the natural thing to do would be to put out your hand to steady the load. Just in case the load should shake loose and fall.

From what i understand (explained by a Bible teacher i listen to), the Israelites knew better than to touch the ark, and thus, God held them accountable, even more accountable than the Philistines who had touched all over the ark and treated it all kinds of ways.

Brinny a wife knows where she stands.

The status of a concubine is not secure.

I think that concubine covers a broad range of relationships.
