I Samuel Chapter 17 David and Goliath

And David put his hand in his bag, and took hence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, and the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth.
Verse 49

David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off his head therewith. And when the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled.

THAT is a glorious verse all by itself..it's soooo descriptive of WHO the POWER is behind the Israelites when they come through triumphant, and that is GOD.

Yes a wonderful verse indeed.

Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel.

Chapter 17 verse 45

Amen! Perhaps here is a glimpse of why God called David the "apple of His eye" and David was described as a man after God's own heart....

I Samuel Chapter 18

And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.

Chapter 18 verse 1

That's quite remarkable, isn't it? Reminds me of the verse where it says Jesus sticketh closer than a brother....

And the women answered one another as they played, and said, Saul hath slain his thousands, and Davd his tens of thousands.

I Samuel 18 verse 7

The fame of David was rising and this very much displeased King Saul.

Uh-oh, yup...Saul's thoughts of David change a LOT, don't they?

David played with his hand, as at other times: and there was a javelin in Saul's hand.

And Saul cast the javelin; for he said, I will smite David even to the wall with it.

I Samuel 18 verse 10

Uh-oh, yup...Saul's thoughts of David change a LOT, don't they?

When we get to verse 10 Saul tries to kill David with a Javelin.

The story relating to King Saul and David gets very complicated. Saul offers his daughter Michal as a wife for David. But it is actually a plot to hopefully get David killed fighting the Philistines.

As a dowry King Saul asked for a hundred Philistine foreskins. This request pleased David. David killed two hundred Philistines and took the foreskins to Saul. Saul gave David his daughter Michal to wife.

Saul was now afraid of David and considered him his enemy. Fighting with the Philistines continued and all the while the fame of David continued to grow.

I Samuel Chapter 18

Brinny you are quite correct. In the sight of King Saul, David could do nothing right.

Every victory achieved by David rubbed salt in the wound and made Saul even more afraid of David.

Saul began think that the only answer to this problem was to have David killed.

that must've been a nightmare and THEN some for David...

I Samuel Chapter 19

And Saul spake to Jonathan his son and all his servants, that they should kill David.
19 verse 1

Can you imagine what it was like to hear Saul say that? And about David, of all people who was a champion for Saul the king, and for Israel?

The rest of Chaper 19 is rather confusing.
Saul's son Jonathan loves David and helps him escape.
Saul's daugher Michal loves her husband David and helps him escape.
The rest of Chapter 19 Saul is plotting and planning to kill David.
Then Saul takes off his clothes and lies naked on the ground all day.
Saul has completely lost it by the end of Chapter 19.

During history many dictators have killed people for no other reason than they were too popular for their own good. Jealousy is a great motivator for evil amoung dictators.
