  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I Samuel Chapter 20

Throughout chapter 20 King Saul is wanting to kill David.

Jonathan works out a signal to indicate Saul's mood. Jonathan is to fire three arrows. He then sends his servant of retrieve the arrows.

If Jonathan calls out, The arrows are this side of thee, it means it is safe to come home. If Jonathan calls out, The arrows are beyond thee, it means run and hide for there is danger for David here.

King Saul got suspicious and angry and threw a javelin at his son Jonathan in a display of bad temper.

Chapter 20 ends with David going off, to hide away from King Saul.

Whoa! Saul is reeeeally losin' it here, ain't he?

I Samuel Chapter 21

Brinny during Chapter 21 Saul continues in his efforts to have David killed.

David is on the run from Saul and from Sauls many spies. David ate some hallowed bread because he was desperate.
Verse 6

David prended that he had gone mad and was foaming at the mouth as part a pretence of being mad. He did this to discourage the King of Gath from sending him back to Saul. The fortunes of David had truely reached a low ebb by Chapter 21
Verse 13

I Samuel Chapter 22

400 men flocked to David to suppport him.

King Saul heard that a priest had given David some bread and Goliaths sword, so he killed him and all his fathers family.

Only Abiathar, one of the priests sons, escaped and went to join David's group.

King Saul killed 85 priests in total.

Nob was the city of priests. Saul killed eveyone in Nob.
I Samuel 22 verse 19

I think it would be fair to say that Saul had a very bad temper.
It was death for anyone that crossed Saul or even appeared to cross him.
And it was also death for their whole family.

I Samuel Chapter 23

By this time 600 men had joined David on the run from King Saul.

Abiathar is now a priest and is working for David.

Some Philistines attacked Keilah and David destroyed the Philistine army.

The rest of Chapter 23 is Saul's army chasing David and his men around the wilderness, woods and mountains, and not being able to catch him.

At the end of the chaper Saul is called away to fight an army invading Philistines.

Saul should've been thankful that David didn't take him out, which he could've easily done, simply as a means of self defense, yet Saul seemed foolishly oblivious to this.

Yes Brinny if David could kill a giant like Goliath he could have got rid of Saul quite easily. But it was not in Davids nature to go down that road.

I Samuel Chapter 24

Saul was hunting David with 3,000 men, and Saul went into cave to rest. David was already in the cave hiding with his men. While Saul was resting David cut off the skirt to his robe.

Saul later woke up and left. David called after Saul and showed him the piece of cloth that had been cut off. David then challenged Saul as to why he was being persecuted.

In verse 16 it says that Saul wept when he heard the honest words of David. Saul accepted that David would be the next King of Israel. But Saul asked that his family should not all be killed after Sauls death.

I believe it was common for new kings to slaughter all other people that had any claim to the throne, to avoid future arguments about the succession. I believe there was peace between Saul and David after this incident in the cave.

I Samuel Chapter 25

David asked rich man Nabal for food. Nabal had 3,000 sheep and 1,000 goats. Nabal refused food for David and his men. This made God angry and god struck Nabal dead.

Nabal's wife Abigail in the meantime had gone to see David and taken 200 loaves of bread amoung other various tasty snacks for David and his men in verse 18. This made a big impression on David so he decided to marry Abigail. David also took a wife called Ahinoam.

Saul had a daughter called Michal. Michal had previously married David. But King Saul decided to give David's first wife Michal to another man.

I thought at the end of Chapter 4 that there was peace between David and Saul, but it seem that King Saul still had a few nasty tricks up his sleeve, to cause trouble for David.

At the start of Chapter 25 is says that Samuel had died.

Abigail was a very wise and noble woman. Her husband Nabal was one nasty character. He didn't even appreciate the fact that he had a Proverbs 31 wife, right there, defending him from David who was gonna kill him. Abigail was also very courageous to go to David and plead as she did, offering a sort of peace offering. No wonder she won David's heart.

I don't understand why David also married Ahinoam, tho'

Brinny the name of Ahinoan is hardly mentioned in the Bible, except that she gave birth to David oldest son Amnon.

There is an interesting story about Amnon (2 Samuel 13 verse 15)

Amnon became sexually obsessed with a passionate love for his half sister Tamar. (Tamar was the sister of Absalom). Amnon tricked Tamar into visiting him. Whereupon Amnon raped Tamar.

After having sex with half sister Tamar his love turned to hate. Amnon hated Tamar with a hatred even stronger than the passion that he loved her before they had sex. Amnon totally hated Tamar and threw her out of his house.

The brother of Tamar was Absalom. Absalom was very angry that Amnon had raped Absalom's sister.

Two years later Tamar's brother Absalom got Amnon drunk. While Amnon was drunk Absalom murdered Amnon. The rape of Tamar had been avenged with the death of Amnon.

2 Samuel 13 verse 28

So it seems to me that no good came from David's marriage to Ahinoam.
