  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

We see here great disobedience by Israel. God, in His glorious mercy, gives Israel chances to turn from their sin but they only stop for a time then they return to sin.
I think this chapter is a good example of how great of a hold sin can have on our lives and how we can return to sin again and again. It also demonstrates God's mercy in forgiving any sin - I wonder if the next chapter will demonstrate that the only "cure" for habitual sin is The Lord? And that He is mightier than any sin?

Judges Chapter 4

And the children of Israel did evil in the Lord, when Ehud was dead

THERE she is! Deborah! What a re-MARK-a-ble way for God to demonstrate that He indeed is NOT in a box of man's making, nor does He think as a finite being (us), but He will use whosoever He chooses. ("God is no respecter of persons:" ~Acts 10:34b) And what a Godly woman she was, for she feared God and BELIEVED Him. She was FEARLESS because she BELIEVED that God would do as He SAID He would do, and conquer Israel's enemies. Deborah was merely "following" His very real PRESENCE into the midst of those enemies, knowing that He had ALREADY DONE IT.

How REMARKABLE is it that this man (Ba'rak) so trusted in this woman of God that he would not go to battle unless she went. And she unhesitatingly did, but was also very wise to forewarn him that the enemies would be given over to the hands of a woman, rather than his hands.

Again, what strikes me the most is God's forgiveness and compassion for the people of Israel.

i agree! It's astounding! They only seemed to call to Him or RECOGNIZE His existence when they were in so much oppression they were between a rock and a hard place....then He'd forgive them, rescuing them, and they would acknowledge Him for a while......

Judges 4 verse 3

And the children of Israel cried unto the Lord: for he had nine hundred chariots of iron; and twenty years he mightily oppressed the children of Israel.

King of Canaan
The King of Canaan oppressed the children of Israel for 20 years.

The name of the prophetess and judge of the Israelites at this time was Deborah.

Deborah told Barak to lead Israelites in the fight against the King of Canaan.
Barak as victorious and destroyed the King of Canaan in battle. Judges 4:24

Barak is a very unusual name.

Barack Obama is not spelt the same.

Deborah was the name of the great prophetess and judge of the Israelites at that time.

bcmon my father was a very religous man, but he could not pronounce the word Deborah.

It is prounced DEB-ER-RAH.

My father was a avid reader of the Bible. He was also a lay preacher. He read the Book of Judges and saw the name Deborah and thought the emphasis should be on the letter "O".

This gave DEB-BOR-RAH. And no amount of discussion could ever get him to change his mind. No-one else ever said it that way. But there was no changing my father once his mind was made up.

My father dies 30 years ago and I have been looking after my Mum ever since.

Judges Chapter 5

Brinny thank you for those beautiful wonderful words.

There can be no doubt that Deborah was one of the great judges of Israel. She led Barak and the children of Israel against the King of Canaan. The King of Canaan had opressed the Israelites for 20 years. The King of Canaan was totally destroyed by Deborah and Barak.

I love this verse Judges 5 verse 31

And the land had rest forty years

Judges Chapter 5

Judges Chapter 5 is the Song of Deborah.
Here are some lovely words that Deborah sang to God.

But let them that love him be as the sun when he goeth forth in his might.

Judges 5 verse 31

Deborah had a lot to sing about. God have given Deborah and the army commander Barak victory over the King of Canaan. The army of the children of Israel totally destroyed the King of Canaan. The King of Canaan had oppressed the Israelites for 20 years. But Deborah led them to a marvelous victory. There was then peace in the land as described in this verse.

And the land had rest forty years. Judges 5:31

How Deborah is pronounced here in Canada generally has to do with your heritage and the region of Canada you live in. My family pronounces it E and, if memory serves correct, my husbands family O so I pronounce it differently than my husband, as with many names and words.
