Book of Judges

Now after the death of Joshua it came ot pass, that the children of Israel asked the Lord saying, Who shall go up for us against the Cannanites.

Judges I verse 1

And the Lord said, Judah shall go up: behold I have delivered the land into his hand. Judge 1:2

By a miracle of God the children of Israel are led to another victory over the Cannanites.

The Book of Judges talks about the tribe of Judah as though it were a single man. For example, Behold I have delivered the land into his hand.

bcmom I am the carer for my Mother aged 94. My mother is very weak. She can only just about hold a spoon to eat with. She gets in a mess eating, but still likes to try to feed herself. She is proud of the fact that she can still feed herself.

bcmom I am the carer for my Mother aged 94. My mother is very weak. She can only just about hold a spoon to eat with. She gets in a mess eating, but still likes to try to feed herself. She is proud of the fact that she can still feed herself.

So Joshua has died, and God chooses Judah, and Judah and Simeon together go to claim their land and slew ten thousand men in Bezek. Whoa!

God makes this wonderful promise to the children of Israel, that he will never break his covenant with Israel.

Re: Judges 2: It appears that this new generation that rose up in Israel (after the death of Joshua and the older generations) was not taught of the Lord and had no interest whatsoever in the God of Israel.....

7 And the people served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works of the Lord, that he did for Israel.

8 And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died, being an hundred and ten years old.

9 And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnathheres, in the mount of Ephraim, on the north side of the hill Gaash.

10 And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the Lord, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel.

11 And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and served Baalim:

12 And they forsook the Lord God of their fathers, which brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the people that were round about them, and bowed themselves unto them, and provoked the Lord to anger.

We see here great disobedience by Israel. God, in His glorious mercy, gives Israel chances to turn from their sin but they only stop for a time then they return to sin.
I think this chapter is a good example of how great of a hold sin can have on our lives and how we can return to sin again and again. It also demonstrates God's mercy in forgiving any sin - I wonder if the next chapter will demonstrate that the only "cure" for habitual sin is The Lord? And that He is mightier than any sin?
