In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Re: Chapters 9 and 10:

Chapter 9:

Abimelech, one of Gideon's sons was evil,

5 And he went unto his father's house at Ophrah, and slew his brethren the sons of Jerubbaal, being threescore and ten persons, upon one stone: notwithstanding yet Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left; for he hid himself.

THEN he wanted to be "king", when in all of Gideon's years, Gideon declared GOD as the true KIng of the Hebrews.

Abimelech reigned three years as king and died tragically, and this is in answer to his brother Jotham's cry to God.

56 Thus God rendered the wickedness of Abimelech, which he did unto his father, in slaying his seventy brethren:

57 And all the evil of the men of Shechem did God render upon their heads: and upon them came the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal.

Re: Chapter 10

So Jair (Israel's judge -who had judged Israel 22 years) died, and after he was buried, Israel did evil in the sight of God again, forsaking the Lord and serving every other god around them :swoon:

God intervened to ensure that King Abimelech was killed by a woman. Abimelech was a mighty warrior and had won many battles. Abimelech had slaughtered many people to become king and was an evil man.

Judges 9 verse 54 says that it was thought an insult for a warrior to be killed by a woman. King Abimelech was killed when a woman dropped a piece of millstone on his head, from a tower that Abimelech was attacking.

Yes it seems that God intervened to destroy the evil King Abimelech.

Judges 10 verse 7

Jephthah was chosen to to lead the children of Israel in their battle against the Ammonites. Jephthah was living in the land of Tob. Because earlier Jephthah had fled from his brethren who had turned him out of his home. His brethren turned Jephthah out his father's house because he was the son of a harlot and not a son of Gilead's wife. Jephthah was a mighty man of valour. In their hour of darkest need the children of Israel turned to Jephthah to lead them.

Judges Chapter 11 verse 32

So Jephthah passed over unto the children of Ammon to fight against them; and the Lord delivered them into his hands

The Ammonites had occupied the Israeli lands on the east bank of the Jordan for 18 years. The Ammonites also crossed the Jordan and attacked the children of Israel on the west bank from time to time.

Jephthah through a miracle of God defeated the Ammonites. In a mighty battle Jephthah conquered 20 cities.

Thus the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel. (Judges 11 v 33)

Judges 12

And the men of Ephraim gathered themselves together, and said unto Jephthah, Wherefore passedst thou over to fight the children of Ammon, and didst not call us to go with thee? we will burn thine house upon thee with fire.

Judges 12 verse 1

Jephthah punished the tribe of Ephraim in a mighty battle. The Israeli tribe of Ephraim for some reason could not pronounce the word SHIBBOLETH. When fugitives were captured trying to escape by crossing over the Jordan they were told to say SHIBBOLETH. The Ephraimites all said it wrong and were captured and punished.

After punishing the Ephraimites Jephthah was then judge over all Israel for six years .

Just wondering about these verses in Chapter 10.......who spoke to God in these verses and who was God talking to?

10 And the children of Israel cried unto the Lord, saying, We have sinned against thee, both because we have forsaken our God, and also served Baalim.

11 And the Lord said unto the children of Israel, Did not I deliver you from the Egyptians, and from the Amorites, from the children of Ammon, and from the Philistines?

12 The Zidonians also, and the Amalekites, and the Maonites, did oppress you; and ye cried to me, and I delivered you out of their hand.

13 Yet ye have forsaken me, and served other gods: wherefore I will deliver you no more.

14 Go and cry unto the gods which ye have chosen; let them deliver you in the time of your tribulation.

15 And the children of Israel said unto the Lord, We have sinned: do thou unto us whatsoever seemeth good unto thee; deliver us only, we pray thee, this day.

16 And they put away the strange gods from among them, and served the Lord: and his soul was grieved for the misery of Israel.

What i just realized is that when the children of Israel cried out to God, they just wanted relief from the oppression and what was being done to them...they weren't repentant, because they still had the false gods among them. They were not grieved about what they had done to God and their great sin, they just wanted His hand to remove the oppression. Their hearts were STILL not right.

15 And the children of Israel said unto the Lord, We have sinned: do thou unto us whatsoever seemeth good unto thee; deliver us only, we pray thee, this day.

16 And they put away the strange gods from among them, and served the Lord: and his soul was grieved for the misery of Israel.

...and the last part of verse 16 where it says "and his soul was grieved for the misery of Israel"...that God's Soul, right? Did the Israelites care that they had grieved His soul?

Re: Chapter 11:

Jephthah was a mighty man of valour and was wise in his responses to the elders of Gilead when they had the gall to ask Jephthah to help them against the Ammonites who were warring against them, after they had spurned him and cast him out in a most horrible way. God was with Jephthah and gave him victory against all who were warring against Israel.

This chapter ends on a tragic note as Jephthah realizes he spoke too hastily and without wisdom as he declared a rash promise to the Lord, not realizing he was speaking about his daughter and his only child. God never told him to do such a thing. Perhaps that is an example of why we are to pray for GOD'S WILL to be done, always and not make such vows. It was a tragic, tragic thing, yet, i do believe that God's grace superseded all of it, in spite of Jephthah's tragically rash vow. How heartbreaking this must have been for Jephthah.

Chapter 12:

Is this OUTRAGEOUS, or what?

verse 1: And the men of Ephraim gathered themselves together, and went northward, and said unto Jephthah, Wherefore passedst thou over to fight against the children of Ammon, and didst not call us to go with thee? we will burn thine house upon thee with fire.

THAT was rather foolish, wasn't it? They actually "gathered together" and "went after" Jephthah like a "mob"....reminds me of this verse:

"Behold, they shall surely gather together, but not by me: whosoever shall gather together against thee shall fall for thy sake." ~Isaiah 54:15

and this verse:

"No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD." ~Isaiah 54:17

And what happened? They got throttled.

Jephthah judged Israel 6 years before he died.

The children of Israel keep turning to false gods like Baalim and making God angry. Eventually of course 10 of the 12 tribes are overrun by their enemies. Ten of the twelve tribes are lost to history. They are called the 10 lost tribes of Israel. In the end it is only the tribe of Judah that stays loyal. And from this they get the name the Jews. And the area called Judea. By the time of Jesus the Jews consist mainly of the tribe of Judah.

Yes what the tribe of Ephraim said to Jephthah was outrageous. But God punished the Ephraimites most harshly for the threat to burn Jephthah's house down with him inside it.

i didn't know that.....i always wondered where the word "Jews" came from....

i wonder if those who kept turning to false gods ever realized that they grieved God and broke His heart?

Re: Judges 13:

THIS is an intriguing chapter, first there's the woman (Manoah's wife) who was barren (ever notice the similarities of the barren women mentioned in the Old Testament, and how they are visited by angels and told they would, incredulous as it may seem, CONCEIVE?) Isn't that precious that God makes it a point to tell them in such a glorious way, that their days of grief are over, and that they will conceive, when probably they thought they never would?

So the woman is told that she would have a son and he would be a Nazarite (which means "consecrated to God") and that he would be so from his birth till the day of his death.

What's interesting is that God mooooved on behalf of the Israelites with the birth of Samson and that he would eventually be God's champion for Israel. And it appears that God did this without being asked to and without the Israelites crying out to Him. This just demonstrates how inexplicable God's grace and mercy is.
