It never ceases to amaze me how people don't read the bible. If one doesn't understand that the 10 commandments are done away they can not understand what Christ came to do.

Luk 16:16 The law and the prophets were until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it.

The term "Christ" represents "the King of the Jews":
"Where is he that is born "King of the Jews"? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where "Christ" should be born. And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet, And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come "a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel".

Notice how Herod uses the term Christ synonymously with the term King of the Jews and how the chief priest and scribes respond to Herod's question of where the Christ is to be born (In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet, And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come "a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel"). It is clear that the term "Christ" was used to reference the anointed Heir to David's throne, the Messiah: the rightful heir to Rule God's people. If you are going to have a proper relationship with Jesus, you must relate to him as your Ruler: in obedience.

The 10 Commandments are absolutely done away as Jesus' Rule replaced the 10 Commandments.

The law is not a reference to the Torah, almost always the law is a reference to mankind's obligation to live right before God on any moral plain of existence. I know many of you that believe the Torah is still relevant are screaming inside yourself but let me ask you this question: why don't you stone adulterers to death as Moses commanded in the Torah?

For those of you that believe Paul's writings are inspired of God, why don't you believe Paul:

2Co 3:7 But if the ministration of death, written and engraven in stones (what was written and engraved in stones? THE 10 COMMANDMENTS), was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not stedfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of his countenance; which glory was to be done away:
2Co 3:8 How shall not the ministration of the spirit be rather glorious?
2Co 3:9 For if the ministration of condemnation be glory (This is a reference to the 10 Commandments being the ministration of condemnation), much more doth the ministration of righteousness exceed in glory.
2Co 3:10 For even that which was made glorious had no glory in this respect, by reason of the glory that excelleth.
2Co 3:11 For if that which is done away was glorious (Paul clearly is saying the 10 commandments are DONE AWAY), much more that which remaineth is glorious.

This isn't the only place Paul addresses this

Gal 4:21 Tell me, ye that desire to be under the law, do ye not hear the law?
Gal 4:22 For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman.
Gal 4:23 But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman was by promise.
Gal 4:24 Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar. (Paul says the first Covenant leads to bondage)
Gal 4:25 For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children.
Gal 4:26 But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.
Gal 4:27 For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: for the desolate hath many more children than she which hath an husband.
Gal 4:28 Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise.
Gal 4:29 But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now.
Gal 4:30 Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman (The Law) and her son (And those who follow it): for the son of the bondwoman (those who follow the law) shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman (those who follow Christ).
Gal 4:31 So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman (those who follow the law), but of the free.

Matthew 5:17 is very poorly written in English. Jesus was saying that he came to raise the standards of the law, not to lower them, but he didn't preach the Torah. If you think salvation is in the 10 commandments you have totally missed Jesus message: Jesus raised the standards of the law and replaced its teachings with a higher set of rules.

I take it this post is so self-evident that it need not be debated. The real question is why is there such confusion on this issue, with the clear evidence that refutes the 10 commandments are still valid.
The law thumpers will arise to the occasion. They will not take your post seriously since they are steeped in false doctrine.

Hey Bob, I am not sure what you mean. Are you saying the 10 Commandments are no longer vaild today? Not wanting to argue just sincerely asking.

Yes, that is what scripture tell us. The 10 commandments were given to Israel as a guide, part of the covenant between God and all who came out of bondage in Egypt. Israel kept breaking the covenant which God knew they would. The plan of salvation was planned before the foundation of the Earth. The plan was for Jesus to come keep the law man could not give all mankind a new and better covenant and shed His blood on Calvary to save man and ratify the new and better covenant. The new covenant does not have the 10 commandments as the central part it. We Christians have the Holy Spirit as our guide. Paul tells us without mincing words that the 10 were temporary commandments. Read the following:

7 Now if the ministry that brought death, which was engraved in letters on stone, came with glory, so that the Israelites could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of its glory, transitory though it was, 8 will not the ministry of the Spirit be even more glorious? 9 If the ministry that brought condemnation was glorious, how much more glorious is the ministry that brings righteousness! 10 For what was glorious has no glory now in comparison with the surpassing glory. 11 And if what was transitory came with glory, how much greater is the glory of that which lasts!

Transitory means temporary.

adjective

1.
not lasting, enduring, permanent, or eternal.

2.
lasting only a short time; brief; short-lived; temporary.

I have been criticized for posting the above scripture as not meaning what I know it is saying. Excuses that actually make me belly laugh have been suggested as what Paul is telling us there.

I also suggest that you read all of Galatians 3, 1jn3: 19-24 and many more scriptures that indicate that we are not under the 10 commandments. Does that mean we are lawless? Certainly not. Christians are under the law of love which covers all moral issues not just 9 (Sabbath was a ritual law not a moral one).

I understand, but you are in agreement that the 10 commandments are still what we should live by as they are the basis for all our laws right?

One needs to define "our laws" in order to properly address this as those who are law proponents use the "law" idea very very loosely and vaguely ignoring context and audience and property and affiliation.

Lets put it this way, the better covenant given by Jesus to all mankind is His law of love:
John 13:34
“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another."

If we love we will not do any of the thou shalt nots. Love covers many many more thou shalt nots than are in 9 commandments of the 10. Do you realize there is no command to love in the 10 commandments. Actually they are only a start concerning how we treat our fellow man, so NO I do not agree they are the basis of our laws. They were the basis of the laws given to Israel. I will have to wait until I reach Heaven to find out why some things were and are the way they are and were. What I do know is that I am a mortal and am depending entirely on the Grace of God for salvation. Some things are not for us to know now.

Thanks for your interest. May God bless you as you study His Word.

Tell your children don't do this and don't do that and eventually they will tell you to stop telling then what not to do and demand you tell them what you want them to do... that is the difference between the 10 commandments and the commandments of Christ. (Just thought I would lend a hand, but you are doing great.)

Ok let me get this straight. You think Jesus came to enable us to:

1. Worship other deities
2. Bow to statues
3. Blaspheme the Creator's name
4. Break the sabbath and not rest
5. Dishonor our parents
6. To murder people
7. To commit adultury
8. To steal
9. To bear false witness
10. To cover our neighbors stuff, especially his wife.

Is this really what some christians think? If so I fear their father is actually the devil... Either that or the Jesus they follow is the devil. The true messiah would never lead anyone away from His Father's Words.

i sense you have your blinders on my friend. What makes you think the 10 are the only set of rules that cover sin? Jesus told us it was He that kept His Father's commandments, the Torah, and asked us to keep His commandments. What was Jesus commandment to His followers. John 13:34
“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another."

Loving others does not hate, loving others does not kill, loving others does not bear false witness and on an on. Get the point?

As far as the Sabbath was concerned, it was a special command given only to the Israelites and was a ritual command not like the other nine which are concerning morality, our duty to God and to our fellow man. Remember, there was nothing about love in the 10 commandments, but it is the greatest command.

I recommend that you read 2Cor 3:7-11. Those verses tell us that the 10 commandments were transitory (temporary). Please don't argue with me about those verses. Paul wrote 2Corinthians and he was Jesus ambassador to us.

I agree there are more than just 10 commands that define sin, but this is topic of this thread so that is where I started.

In John, love is not a new commandment given, but a refreshed one. The command comes from:

Lev 19:17 ‘Do not hate your brother in your heart. Reprove your neighbour, for certain, and bear no sin because of him.
Lev 19:18 ‘Do not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the children of your people. And you shall love your neighbour as yourself. I am יהוה.

Secondly, the sabbath was not just given to Israel (although the mosaic covenant was). Sabbath was from creation. That being said, you must be part of israel to be in covenant with the Creator. Joining yourself to them is the only path of salvation because only they have the promises. Show me where gentiles have a different covenant if you disagree.

You are also wrong about there being no love in the 10 commandments. They are all about love. Love is not a feeling but a dedication to your Creator and your fellow man. The 10 are the basis on which love is founded.
