Can someone please enlighten me on the Steve Benson phenomenon? I know that he left the LDS Church some years ago. Then I was cruising the internet and found that he has gone over to atheism. Anyone know more about this story?

Who is Beve Stenson?

Here's an article about why he left the Mormon faith...

Very interesting.

http://lds-mormon.com/benson1.shtml

and here's his testimony about why he is an atheist today...

http://www.exmormon.org/mormon/mormon418.htm

Also very interesting. Sad. But interesting. He's thrown out the baby with the bathwater. God went right out the window along with the religion of Mormonism. Too bad his faith in God was weaker than his faith in Mormonism.

I've had a couple of private conversations with Steve. His is a unique story because of his family not because of the atheism. I have empathy for those who won't allow themselves to believe or have faith in anything when they realize everything they based their entire life on was a lie.

He is very approachable, but has an ego the size of an elephant. Not sure if it is the Pulitzer he won or his status as first mormon and now exmormon "royalty."

Poor Steve. After reading his testimonial the tears began flowing:cry:

Why don't you contact him directly and tell him. He will respond unless you act stupid. Tell him what you think and your testimony of the truthfullness of mormonism and that you care for him and his future.

He can be reached at :

At one time I was trying to become a political cartoonist/cartoonist so I read and heard him speak as a political cartoonist before I found out he used to be LDS. I'm going be judgemental here (God help me) I also found him to be very arrogant and condescending.

If we were created in His Likeness, who isn't "god-like?"
MF when U hear of GBH coming to a town near you do you think of him in any special way as to compare when I come to your town, or steven benson come with me?

Well, Buddy, I think of you in a "special way" that differs from GBH! ;)

Nonetheless, GBH, or my Stake President, I see individuals that have recognized their potential in being created in God's likeness, and are disciplined enough to do something positive with it. You and Steve are just as much God-like, but I have to admire GBH as the better example. I say "better" because that leaves ample room for the Best example to follow.

I see myself as the best example of myself.
I see you as the best example of a TBM who is so close to what a Christian should be. So close yet so far away.
In my opinion you only got to step away from the gospeh of Joseph Smith jr. and welcome the gospel of Jesus Chirst of the New Testament. A fine line indeed, yet a line one must cross to know what GRACE is all about. Lifting the burden off one's shoulders can be most refreshing, yet scary too. To put one's SALVATION in the hands of someone else can be unnerving, but once you let Jesus do the worring and caring the burden is lifted and the peace comes to the heart, body and soul. However I do understand the other side too.
I understand the guilt and unworthiness of those who depend on their own works to find worthiness to gain EXALTATION. I will never forget the sadness in the eyes of the TBM Chaplin, Bishop and Missionary who all said they didnt believe they would ever be worthy.
At that moment i knew what burden and yoke was placed on every TBM temple recomemend must feel when they look inside their LDS souls. This is why I do what I do, I try to get the MFs of the LDS world to find the gospel of the New Testament and lift the ball and chain of Joseph Smith jr gosple off their religious bodies.
Remember MF this is just how I see it and I understand U will see it different and this is what make the world go around. so good luck in reaching Kolob.

I have empathy for those who won't allow themselves to believe or have faith in anything when they realize everything they based their entire life on was a lie.

So when a person leaves the Christianity you embrace and believes it all a "lie", I'm guessing you think they are simply confused and lost, or having been decieved. But apparently to you, when someone leaves mormonism and thinks it's all a lie, it just must be, rather than realizing that faithful mormon's would think the same as you about a lost brother.

It would be good if double standard and hypocritical thinking patterns were not used by critics and anti-mormons when addressing another religion that person doesn't agree with. It doesn't look good or wise. Because the other side could say the exact same thing that has been said here. But fortunately, most LDS learn not to use those kinds of thinking patterns.

It is instead better to argue issues with sound logic and evidence, rather than ad-hominem personal feelings.
