  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

You know, episode 1 was pretty stinky overall except for the Obi Wan and Qui-Gon Jinn fight with Darth Maul....that was epic. Very well choreographed and the music to it was superb.

I saw A New Hope in 1977 when I was stationed in the Panama Canal Zone. I went to the theater in Balboa and sat in the front row not knowing what to expect. When the opening scene of the star destroyer chasing the cruiser started I just sunk into my seat......I was hooked. Oh, by the way I also saw Jaws there too....kept me off the beaches for a while.....LOL

The Machete order is highly recommended for those who want the prequels.

That would be "Episodes" 4-5-2-3-6. In that order.
That's right, "1" is dropped out altogether. There is no way to save that abomination.

The confused muddle of Zen Buddhism and dualism as the philosophical basis of the universe of "the Force", plus my recognizing it as just an extension of what false philosophers had called "the life-force" - the attempt to posit an impersonal god to replace the Personal One, ruin my enjoyment to a considerable extent.
Here's a better order: 4-5-4-5-6.

The problem with the "Machete" order is that "Attack of the Clones" is really just an awful movie. Another problem is that, no matter what one says about prequels, they really only have their meaning in the context of being made and seen after what came before. So you really have to do 4-5-6 before the rest. (and frankly I would say that 2-3 spoil 6)

EDIT: so, really, and completely honestly, I don't recommend watching the prequel trilogy at all, at least not as a prerequisite for watching the new movie. You can catch up to them later. And, now, having seen the new movie, it stands on its own, but profits greatly from having seen 4-5-6. And doesn't need 1-2-3 at all.

Also, the prequels have A LOT of continuity problems with the original trilogy. Lucas didn't seem to care at all if it made sense or not. Sure, you can just make a headcanon to make it work if you're that much of a geek, but not watching them at all is always an option.

That 2 on 1 lightsaber duel gave me a tingle in my leg, man. Incredible! I must've rewatched it 50 times. Ray Park, the cat who played Darth Maul, played "Toad" in X-Men and a lot of other characters like Snake Eyes in the awful G.I. Joe flick. He's EXTREMELY talented!

That duel was and is the only reason I'll watch that wretched film LOL

OK Star Wars aficionados - I want to go see the new Star Wars movie....

However I have never watched a single Star Wars episode (I know the horror of it all!). I don't have then money or time to watch all 6 episodes. Which episodes are essential to watch before seeing the new movie?
Just watch the original Trilogy (4-6, "A New Hope", "Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi") and you'll be fine.

The best light saber fights happened in the original trilogy, IMHO - between Luke and Darth Vader. However, the best scenes in the new prequels were between either Count Dooku and Anakin or Anakin/Obi Wan and the Emperor/Yoda. Those scenes are classic and definitely worth investigating in.

Regardless (and I do pray you have an amazing time seeing the film!!), when you watch it, keep eyes open on the significance of the film in light of current events in our own time as it hits home when you think on it.

The entirety of Star Wars seems focused on this question of how we handle the passions God gives us and what happens when they are out of line. You'd probably be blessed by this amazing series on the issue before seeing any of the older films, if going here to

I am doing the Machete Order with my kids. We watched IV yesterday and V today. Sometime between now and the second week of January (we'll be visiting family and are all postponing watching VII so that we can have a family Star Wars party) we'll watch II, III and VI.

I still prefer the gzt order to the Machete order: IV, V, IV, V, VI. At every point, you're watching a better movie and you understand the entire series better in the truly relevant ways.

Episode III Revenge of the Sith was incredible imho. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and feel it was the one bright spot in the prequels. It tied up a lot of loose ends. It was a great story and the only time Lucas does something right post-1983 if you ask me....

It also had the best light saber duel of any of the films except Phantom Menace (Ray Park's Darth Maul is 100 times better lightsabering than ANYONE!!).

Episode 3 Revenge of the Sith was outstanding imho. I really enjoyed it. Saw it 3 times in the theater. It was the only of the prequels that Lucas truly did RIGHT.

My problem with the first two prequels is that the old films from the 70's and early 80's focused on the Force as an allegory for religion and faith. As a kid growing up, I saw Obi Wan, Yoda, Luke, etc. as the last of the "believers" and guys like Han Solo as the skeptical atheists. The Rebellion were a bunch of people with faith and a yearning to bring back the old order in a world of fascist skeptical cynical utilitarians. That's how I saw things. It was kind of like the Jedi were clergy, the Rebels the laity, and the Empire the atheist scum.

With Phantom Menace, the "Force" seems to be GENETIC!!! "Midi-chlorions?" What the heck?! So what makes a person a Jedi is just genetic fluke midi-chlorions? Ugh....."The boy (Anakin) has the highest midi-chlorion count I've ever seen!" <SHRUG>

The first two films had a lot wrong with them, a ton of plot holes, and way too much CGI at the expense of story. Natalie Portman, though attractive, is a flat, bland, colorless actress who brings zero to the table. Hayden Christiansen was about the worst choice on Earth for Anakin. Ewan McGregor was fair. The ONLY reason I have fond feelings toward the Phantom Menace is because my wife and I got engaged right before it and it was the first movie we went to see as a couple. I was head over heels in love and full of happiness and excitement at that time. I was joyful and at the top of life. So I was able to cope better with bad acting!!! ^_^^_^^_^

In my opinion, Empire Strikes Back is the greatest the saga ever got to. The gold standard. Though so many people pan and hate it, I adore Return of the Jedi and still do. That's my second favorite. Third would be Revenge of the Sith. Fourth would be the first old film, A New Hope.

I'm cynical about the new one. I'm nervous. JJ Abrams is at the helm and everything that man touches turns to vessels of flatulence imo. He took my beloved cerebral Star Trek and transformed it into a silly, shlocky, action yarn of banality and disrespectful homages. I haven't liked much that he has done.

I hope the new Star Wars isn't written from a 2015 mindset, though I suspect it is. I hope I'm wrong.

I remember going to see "the Hobbit" at the theater and walked out feeling like I had a colonoscopy with no lubricant. That film was a disgraceful mess. Peter Jackson ruined that classic story. I hope Abrams isn't the latest Jackson.

Seen 4,5,6 multiple times, loved all 3-I agree The Empire strikes back is the best of all of the movies. Have NOT seen I,II,III, seen parts of them on T.V. do need to watch all of them.
But I agree the Empire Strikes back-the best one.
Do want to see the new one.

outer space, guns, characters that grunt more than speak, chicks that were hot in the 70's -- they're practically kissing cousins!
Yeah, what's not to like about that?
