Nowadays corporal punishment will get you into trouble.
The bible is clear about using and sparing the rod.
Yet what does it mean to use the rod?

Rods are used to punish, they are also used to measure, a concept seen in both Ezekiel and Revelations.
Measuring...examining...determining...all the same general concept.
If you take that into account, you then know that you have more options, that on the basis of knowledge you are now accountable for seeking options before dealing with kids.

John 2:15 So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables.

Today Jesus would have been arrested on the spot...think about it.

:D love it, have to agree with ya brother. I have come close to getting in trouble. The family and I stopped into a subway for lunch back when my youngest was about 8. He kept interrupting his mother and I, and so I reached out and bopped him on the back of the head and told him to quit interrupting. The owner of the store came flying around the counter, red faced, spitting, and screaming at the top of his lungs for the employees to call the police. He called me a bully, and an abuser, etc. Praise God for his spirit, as he kept me calm. The police arrived, and by the grace of God he happened to be the police chaplain, and when they took witness reports they sided with me. So I learned, follow God, no matter what, let him work it out.

Lol we have been through this before.

Why is it some people take the Bible literal in some parts but ignore the obvious literal points.

Did God literally to use a rod on a child? No! He was speaking of not disciplining your child. Why is it people think you have to strike someone to teach them. Seems to me to be living by the sword. Did Jesus smack his disciples? Why not? For those who think you should use a rod, what if i pulled out my staff when you said something I did not like and beat you with it, I mean you were wrong for saying it, It was clear i was right, would it then be ok for me to beat you? no? then why do you do it to children.

The truth is i have never seen a case of a parent striking a child that was not done out of anger. Now in James God tells us to be slow to anger, that human anger does not serve the Lord. So why do you have it with your child?

So Jesus turned over tables and made a whip. this is not as you portray it Btw Jesus did not whip people as He was whipped, most likely He used it on the animals. Unless you can point to where the Bible says He whipped a person. You should be ashamed portraying Jesus that way, As a God/Man who strikes people. Was it not Jesus that said turn the Other cheek, and that means just that if someone strikes you offer your other cheek too. Not everyone can here that, and I have heard preachers say Jesus did not mean turn the other cheek if some one hits you you hit them back, bull, false doctrine. Jesus did not strike anyone who beat Him, spit in His face, whipped Him, or nailed Him to the Cross for death.

So hey its fine you live by I can strike my child, but don't be a punk, when you do something wrong against an adult expect to be struck. After all your living By the sword.

Jesus speaks of rule with a rod during the thousand years. It means discipline comes fast, and disobedience is not put up with for a second, does not mean he goes around hitting people with a iron rod.

98 you think the Bible is not literal in 6 day creation yet you think He meant it literal with the rod? lol ok :) I guess you pick and chose what you want the Bible to say.

The problem people have with reading the Bible is they have their beliefs set, they then take and ignore from the Bible to fit with what they believe. This Is the wrong way. You should first be willing to change read the word except it for what it Says and then you change to fit the Bible, don't change the Bible to fit you.

Discipline is nearly gone from our Western society today, and look at the mess we are in with self-indulgence on every hand. Children need to learn discipline and respect for their parents and elders and others, else they will likely never learn to bow to God (or be a worthwhile citizen in society).

The "rod" in the Bible speaks of discipline (not mutilating someone), and those who have not had it will likely minimize obedience to God, and will forfeit much as a Christian; and if they are not a real Christian, but only following bits of the Bible, they will forfeit Heaven in the end for their rebellious spirit.

Being a Christian is not about living up to a set of works within the Bible. You say, "but only following bits of the Bible", as if to say that if you don't follow all of the Bible that God's grace is not sufficient. We all fall short. If someone has humbly repented, then God's grace covers them through Jesus' shed blood. No ifs, ands, or buts. That said, they should follow the Bible, but as you well know, we are fallible human beings, and in this imperfection we are prone to error in interpreting the scriptures, especially if we aren't as close to God as we should be.

As far as the rod goes. After analyzing the scripture, I see nothing to denote that the rod spoken of is referring to anything other than a literal rod. Sure, in the context, it can be possibly taken so as to indicate correction in the general, with a rod being a way of correction.

A parent shouldn't discipline in anger, but in no way does this mean that we can't use the rod, or that the verse isn't meaning a literal rod when it says rod.

Blu no one was saying beat their kid. Read the op again, he said measure, think, be rationale. The punishment should fit the crime. Like when I bopped my kid on the head, I did not smack, or haul back and hit. No if I had done that the other patrons would have told the police. I instead got the boys attention, a quick firm tap, that is the main emphasis when it comes to spanking a child. Getting their attention, It only works when they are young. As they mature and are able to reason and converse things change, Life is fluid, I am learning this. I am one who would like things to be simple, and the same across the board. Funny that as a livestock farmer, father, and assistant Pastor God has stuck me right in the middle where everything is always in motion , :) guess thats how he makes me grow.

It doesn't say he hit anyone with the whip. Given his force of personality, he would not need to.

Pro 23:13 Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you strike him with a rod, he will not die.
Pro 23:14 If you strike him with the rod, you will save his soul from Sheol.

This indicates striking. That was a purpose of the rod.

I find spanking most helpful for the age where the child is old enough to reason cause to effect (or else it is needless pain), but not yet old enough to really reason through complex matters. The classic slapping of a hand to keep the child from a hot stove is one example. The workings of a stove may be beyond the child, but they can understand that a swat discourages them. No amount of rebuking may explain the workings of a stove to a child who is not at the point yet to understand it. But a quick swat might get the point through to them to avoid the stove.

For a short time I gave my children a choice for their punishment, just to see what they would choose. They usually preferred the spanking over time out. It was over quickly and they went on with their day, realizing what they did was wrong, but realizing it was now over.

Children all respond differently. My son too responded better to spanking than my other two. The girls would be more upset with verbal disapproval, etc. without the need for spanking.

And as was pointed out earlier, children's needs change as they age. Children go through phases. Spanking was never the first resort for our family. However, if we knew that a particular child responds to spanking in a serious situation, then we used it. After a while spanking doesn't get through, or is not appropriate for their age and we can move on to methods by which they can began to understand their motivations and take responsibility for them.

When I was a child I responded to spanking better than other punishments for a while. Then I stopped responding so my father changed to something else.

Obviously spanking so as to injure is never good.

One alternative to spanking that accomplishes the same thing is a pinch on the arm. It has less risk of over doing it and still gets their attention quite well. It can also be done while they are sitting down!

This thread is just yet another example of how some individuals interpret - or should I say misinterpret - the Bible to match their own beliefs on a subject.

I'm all for spanking a child if they need it. A swat or two on the butt is not a beating. Some children don't respond to anything else.

Using a rod or belt is common used is beating your kids I am sorry you do not like the term. Lets look at the definition.

beat verb \ˈbēt\
: to hit (something) repeatedly

: to hit (someone) repeatedly in order to cause pain or injury

: to hit (a drum) repeatedly in order to produce music or a signal
beatbeat·en or beatbeat·ing

Full Definition of BEAT

transitive verb
1
: to strike repeatedly:
a : to hit repeatedly so as to inflict pain —often used with up
b : to walk on : tread <beat the pavement looking for work>
c : to strike directly against forcefully and repeatedly : dash against
d : to flap or thrash at vigorously
e : to strike at in order to rouse game; also : to range over in or as if in quest of game
f : to mix by stirring : whip —often used with up
g : to strike repeatedly in order to produce music or a signal <beat a drum>
2
a : to drive or force by blows <beat back his attackers>
b : to pound into a powder, paste, or pulp
c : to make by repeated treading or driving over <beat a path>
d (1) : to dislodge by repeated hitting <beat dust from the carpet> (2) : to lodge securely by repeated striking <beat a stake into the ground>
e : to shape by beating <beat swords into plowshares>; especially : to flatten thin by blows
f : to sound or express especially by drumbeat
3
: to cause to strike or flap repeatedly <a bird beating its wings>
4
a : overcome, defeat; also : surpass —often used with out
b : to prevail despite <beat the odds>

So you see while you do not like the word I did use it correctly.

I can snap my 6 year old to attention with the tone of my voice. It takes more skill as a parent not to use force than it does to use force. Force is the easy way out. I am a slave to God, My God does not beat me not even once, nor do i want Him too.

So if you interrupted me i could bop you on the back of the Head? no? why not? you can do it to your kids, so you see it as ok. If you would not do it to an adult you should not do it to a child.

lets look at proverbs 23.
23 When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee:

2 And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite.

3 Be not desirous of his dainties: for they are deceitful meat.

4 Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom.

5 Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven.

6 Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats:

7 For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.

8 The morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words.

9 Speak not in the ears of a fool: for he will despise the wisdom of thy words.

10 Remove not the old landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless:

11 For their redeemer is mighty; he shall plead their cause with thee.

12 Apply thine heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge.

13 Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die.

14 Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell.

15 My son, if thine heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine.

Do you literally put a knife to your throat? Why not you say this part is literal with the Rod then the knife to throat much be literal too.

My oldest son is 18, never was whipped or struck any other way. He is going into the navy, never used drugs, never smoked, had drinks his dad gave him, but never been drunk. He is a good kid who cares about others. So if we never had to use why do others?

Funny how you say God said to strike your child, Yet Jesus said not to hit someone if they hit you, but to turn the other cheek. God is unchanging. Didn't the Law say an eye for an eye, but also back then God said love your neighbor as your self and in fact what the eye for an eye meant was do on to others as you would have done to you. So if you strike your children its ok for me to strike you. Do you follow all the laws of the old? Even if it meant use the rod which it did not, it is clear Jesus said not to do it.

Agreed. Completely biblical to use corporal punishment within reason. One can argue using complicated and detailed rhetoric but it is utterly lacking a biblical foundation. It is a matter of modern psychology affecting how one approaches the Bible, it's an argument (again) that starts with ones worldview.
