Are you suggesting they lack the $8-$25 to obtain an ID or have limited access to transportation? They don't know a soul who could drive them there at all? Never ever?
Yes. Is that really so hard to imagine? Heck, I have trouble getting to the DMV sometimes, and I'm not hurting for money or transportation. The hours alone make it difficult.

If race is a factor. How do you account for people of color who aren't impoverished or afflicted with the challenges you've addressed? Why do some progress and others don't if race is a barrier?

~Bella

Because it is a factor, not the entirety? Genetics area factor in alcoholism but not all people prone to alcoholism become alcoholics.

However, the fact that minorities experience poverty at a much greater rate than whites suggests that there is a racial factor in play as well.

If whites lived in the same Ghettos in the same numbers as the blacks did, do you believe the number of whites would be equal to the number of blacks that were poor?

If not what would be the determining factor for the difference, ....color of skin?

You are aware that the political ideologies of the Democratic and Republican parties essentially swapped places in the 60s, right? Read up on Richard Nixon and the Southern Strategy.

The Republicans of today would have been the Democrats of yesterday, and vice-versa.

Possibly.

Well, that depends on how they ended up in those ghettos. This is where we get into the concept of systemic racism.

It isn't an automatic switch to Systemic Racism....That's a cop out, an excuse, a catch all, without ever solving the issue because it is to broad.

I'm going to paraphrase here.

If race isn't a factor, how do you account for the fact that people of color are disproportionately affected by poverty and the other challenges addressed?

As a woman of color, I'll tell you what I heard growing up. Choices beget consequences. If I don't want the consequence I'd better use my head and make smarter decisions.

That means avoiding bucket heads as friends.
Not listening to the smooth talking shyster.
Avoid breeding with men whose character and prospects are lacking
Learning from other's mistakes.
Listening to wise counsel.
And not being a follower.

And above all...love yourself.

If I wanted to be respected I had to conduct myself as someone worthy of respect and set boundaries. I couldn't allow my heart or head to put me in compromising positions that derailed me.

If you want to soar you can't allow people, circumstances, or rhetoric to contradict that aim. You've got to be committed and willing to lay things down that stand in your way.

I don't have the loyalties or disposition to stay low for anyone. That's not an option. It has nothing to do with race. That's hunger talking. It's resilience at work. Grit on display. Some people have it and some don't. That's the difference.

But it kind of is. When you start proposing hypotheticals of "what if white people had the same life experiences as black people" when they clearly didn't, you have to ask why that's the case. And it almost always comes down to a system that works differently for different people based on their race - systemic racism.

I'm going to paraphrase here.

Education raises all boats (Blacks)
Agreed. Now, can you explain why blacks go to college at a lower rate than whites?

The Republicans of today would have been the Democrats of yesterday, and vice-versa.

But not only is that not true, there is a constant deflection from Democrats concerning any liability. They want to act like their votes and signatures on racist legislation doesn't matter. And somehow white citizen layman, that have never served a single day in any office are to blame.

They do not want to admit any 'also'. They want the blame squarely set upon whites and Republicans, and share no blame or fault themselves.

Were also not supposed to ask blacks to fess up to enslaving their own kind. Which is still being done to this day. It just seems all parties concerned only want whites to be blamed for actions every single race and nation in history has conducted. Literally, racially fomenting violence and animus against one group of people, concerning issues all groups of people have committed.

Yes my mistake I did misread the numbers. You prefer the percentages because they support your view but the numbers indicate that racism is not the cause of poverty because there are by far a lot more whites living in poverty than any other race. Why do you ignore this fact?
It's as plain as the nose on the poster's avatar...It's obvious that Whites are lazy and unmotivated. Maybe they should quit spending their welfare money on beer, pot, tobacco, guns and rebel flags.

It sounds like you had an excellent family support system and parents (or guardians) who taught you well. Not everyone gets that though - and statistically speaking, black families are affected more than white families.

What system? What legislation? Who is creating the laws and system behind these racist actions?

Look, I understand the game you're playing right now. I've played it myself on other topics! You know full well what I'm talking about.

If you don't then I highly recommend you listen to what the people are actually saying who are currently out in the streets making everyone upset.

ID's.... that's the issue? ID's...

Sheesh...I give ONE example to discuss you think that's the ONLY EXAMPLE????

I feel sorry for all your teachers throughout your life. If your math teacher taught you addition by showing you 2 oranges and then 2 more and asking how many oranges do you now assume math only applies to oranges?????

No kidding... Do you realize that even tho I am white, I did not legislate that? Whites do not have some secret bat phone they pick up, and order harsher legislation against blacks like they were ordering a pizza. Not how it works.

Spoken with true white privilege and extreme white fragility.

You need to read more. Let me recommend you start with "The New Jim Crow" by Michele Alexander. It's a good start (but it is a bit more academically robust and since she uses "examples" don't assume that those are the ONLY topics at hand. Sometimes people use examples as examples.)

You're fortunate. I've lived places where the DMV was only open from 8-4 on weekdays, and a visit might take several hours. I couldn't always take that time off of work. The article I linked earlier named one ID center that was only open one day a month - and not every month - on a weekday during normal working hours. Can you see why people might have difficulties with that?

Without transportation, you have to find another person who can take that time away from work as well, and potentially remain available for several hours while you wait in line so that they can pick you up.

This is why we are talking about statistics. A lot of people don't appreciate what statistics tells them. They like to rely on "anecdotal data". Anecdotal data are limited in scope and tell you very little about the overall population. Indeed there ARE people of color who do quite well! There are MANY such people. But the point is that the majority, the "mean" if you will, do NOT have it so good.

It like someone telling you the average height of a kindergartner is 3'9" tall and you automatically assume that EVERY SINGLE KINDERGARTNER IS EXACTLY 3'9" tall. That isn't how statistics work. Sometimes there are kindergartners significantly taller and signficantly shorter than that!

Everyone has challenges of some sort. But we don't address them in the same way. When you're dealing with serious issues like poverty the solution doesn't happen overnight. That's when vision and perseverance become a factor. Most don't stay the course. This is a long game and the desire for immediacy can derail you.

I've had many reasons to throw in the towel. But I'm not a quitter. The bible addresses the necessity for endurance in many places. Change takes time.

It would be difficult if you never had a day off. How many people can say they work year round with no time away?

As I mentioned, there are hired drivers in communities for that reason. How do you think people managed before Uber and Lyft? They couldn't afford taxis. So they paid someone.

That isn't a weekend or state/federal holiday (when the DMV is closed anyways)? Plenty.

Assuming they could afford to. And something like this isn't going to exist everywhere.
