The "obvious" is the English language. Barr was asked about Mueller's team, not Mueller. The subject of Crist's question was Mueller's team, not Mueller.
Too bad Barr is on record saying he thought the letter was from Mueller's team. Otherwise this excuse might be even the least bit convincing.
The substance of Crist's question makes a distinction between Mueller's team and Mueller, "members of the Special Counsel’s team," renders the team the subject matter, not the special counsel.
I can find many examples of cases where leaders of a team are also part of the team, which makes this distinction moot. What surprises me is that this is really the best that Barr's defenders can come up with. Normally there's at least something plausible to cling to in these cases.
