  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I think redeemed might better serve the purpose as alluded to in the thread. I also like the word delivered followed with the word from as used by Paul in Rom 7:6.

Okay, but they all mean saved....

The simple answer is we're actually delivered/redeemed/saved from 2 different things - sin which came before the law and the law itself.

Yes, "in Christ". In fact in Him we have been delivered from...well, let's read it:

Romans 8:1 1 Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death

In Christ Jesus (and He is in heaven) my humanity has been set free from

1] the law of sin (the sin nature)

and

2] The curse - the wages of sin.

Notice this is true only in Christ.

I still have a sin nature. I am free from the death sentence only as long as I keep my faith in Christ. If I do then at the 2nd coming I will receive a glorified life free from indwelling sin. Then I can say I am without sin, not before.

Sin, death, hell, and the devil. And not least of all, from ourselves.

This death-ful-ness in which we exist, estranged from God, fallen, faltering, unrighteous, dead, dying. Spiritual corpses without hope, seeking and pursuing our own inward, self-directed destruction.

God has rescued us, taken us, placed us into Christ His Son, wrapped us up in His righteousness like a blanket, set us before God spotless and pure, reconciled to God, fully and wholly justified, so that we might stand, on the Final Day, alive and free over sin and death, with Christ, into His life and world everlasting.

Let's explore what it means "to be saved". In order to be saved you must be delivered from something. What is that something???

In Romans 10:9 Paul states that "If you confess that Jesus is Lord and believe that God raised him from death, you will be saved"....

Again, saved from what?
We're saved from enslavement to sin, from darkness to light, from unrighteousness unto righteousness, life to death, separation from God to communion with God again. Back home from being lost: from not knowing where we came from, if anywhere, why we're here, if for anything, and where we're going, if anywhere.

I basically said that. You only quoted half my post for some reason.

If one still has the old nature I question their salvation. This doesn't mean we don't have to deal with the flesh from time to time. Paul shows us it isn't the physical body that is redeemed in Rom 7. He also makes this parallel else where.

"For the wages (consequences) of sin is death. But the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Romans 6:23

We are saved from having to suffer the consequences of eternal death/eternal separation from God.

"If we confess our sins, he is faithful to forgive us of our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness." 1 John 1:9

You have your nature until you die....Christians still retain their nature.

You are never free of sin in this life....You can grow, but you're never righteous before God's law. Hence you had to be delivered from under it....

"And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins." - Matthew 1:21

Jesus saves us FROM our sins...as unpopular a message as that is today...especially here.

Yeah, but He really saves us from the wages of sin, and the wages of sin is death.

Now I'm sure the OP will now say, but we all die. So the next question will be 'does that mean Jesus saves no one?' No, that means Jesus saves us from eternal damnation. We humans are always after the easy quick answers aren't we?

Yes we will all die a physical death due to sin, but Jesus saves us from an eternity of separation from him. :)

Thanks be to our Lord Jesus Christ!!~

Or sin pays in death....

If it wasn't for Christ we would all die the 2nd death, which is the curse of the law.

Rev 20:6 Blessedhttp://www.biblestudytools.com/revelation/20-6.html#cr-descriptionAnchor-1 and holy are those who have part in the first resurrection. The second deathhttp://www.biblestudytools.com/revelation/20-6.html#cr-descriptionAnchor-2 has no power over them....

1. “Save His people from their sins” (Matt. 1:21).

The first result of the Lord’s salvation is deliverance from sin. The Lord’s salvation saves us from our sins. Whoever receives the Lord’s salvation is delivered from the punishment and authority of sin.

2. “Redeemed us out of the curse of the law” (Gal. 3:13).

The Lord’s salvation satisfied the requirements of the law and redeemed us out of the curse of the law. Therefore, the Lord’s salvation delivers us from the curse of the law. Whoever receives the Lord’s salvation is no longer under the curse of the law

3. “Delivers us from the wrath which is coming” (1 Thes. 1:10).

The Lord’s salvation solves the problems of our sin and the punishment related to our sins. Therefore, the Lord’s salvation delivers us from God’s coming wrath. Whoever receives the Lord’s salvation does not need to fear God’s coming wrath because the Lord on the cross received the punishment of God’s wrath in our place and drank the cup of God’s wrath for us.

4. “Delivered us out of the authority of darkness” (Col. 1:13).

The Lord’s salvation delivers us out of the authority of darkness. The authority of darkness is Satan and his kingdom. Through His death on the cross, the Lord defeated Satan and his kingdom. Satan and his kingdom have no ground in us. We have been delivered from Satan’s kingdom and his domination.

5. “Rescue us out of the present evil age” (Gal. 1:4).

In the Lord’s salvation, the world was judged through His death on the cross. Furthermore, when we were baptized into the Lord’s death, being buried together with Him, we were also saved from the world. Therefore, the Lord’s salvation rescues us out of the present evil age.

6. “Does not come into judgment but has passed out of death into life” (John 5:24).

In the Lord’s salvation, we escape judgment and death because He bore our sins on the cross, He was judged by God, and He fully tasted death on our behalf. We are saved, and we will not be judged and condemned again. We have already passed out of death into life.

P { margin-bottom: 0.21cm; } There are several ways of explaining what we are being saved from and now, so let's try one of those different explanations.

As already mentioned, men are made in the image of God. That is, they are able to chose to do right. Right in what context? Right in the sense of being able to exercise judgment and acting accordingly, being governed by justice, mercy and love.

As opposed to animals, who are governed by strength, the strongest member having first dibs on food, reproductive partners and property (territory).

No lesser members ever feel deserving of justice, mercy or love: think about it, will stronger members think of fairness in food distribution? Not a chance.

This animal model is demonstrated in situations where slavery occurs. Interestingly, modern work places have been compared to slavery. Where labour laws are weak, pay, promotion and perks can be administered exploitatively. In proprietary concersn, you can even be fired or passed over because the boss doesn't like your face: he owns the company.

So we are first of all saved from denial of justice, mercy and love. Your boss can be:

  1. unfair, deny you your rights.
  2. unmerciful, insist on penalising your shortcomings.
  3. unloving, refusing to share of the fruits of the group's effort to alleviate the greater needs of some.

Israel was saved from Egypt. Jerusalem expected Messiah to deliver from Roman occupation.

But Israel's deliverance required her to exercise faith, leave the security of Egypt, security that had a high price attached, and journey to a Land where no oppression existed. Jerusalem had to embark on a task in order to make it that land.

Which brings us to the second aspect of salvation. We are saved from ourselves.

Here we are ourselves the purveyors of justice, mercy and love.

Our survival instincts compel us to compete for food and resources, nothing is ever enough. But

  1. our sense of justice tell us it is wrong to steal food belonging to those that produced it through hard work just because we are stronger.
  2. our sense of mercy teaches us to turn a blind eye to stealing of our harvest by those who were unable to produce.
  3. our sense of love to sacrifice food to those who are not skilled enough to even steal.

IOW, we are saved from not loving our neighbor.

But Israel was not found guilty of lack of love. Or was she?

Remember, Israel was special, was chosen to be a blessing to the world.

When God withheld water form her, Israel lost faith, murmured. She failed.

What does that have to do with not loving her neighbor? The tests were meant to be signs to the world, demonstrations that turning to God would save. That's how Rehab was saved, when Israel passed her first test, stepping out of Egypt, prompting her masters to pursue her, and in turn causing their defeat. The event caused Rehab to turn to God. That's loving your neighbor, risking your life, laying it down so that God had a framework to act in, to save, in turn showing His desire to save the world.

This situation repeats, in the food shortages, in the confrontation with the Canaanites, even in the occupation of the Promised Land where Israel had to live a sacrificial life, do good works, let her light shine before men, so that the surrounding nations would see God prosper her, and they would in turn glorify God. The journey through the desert was the drinking from the Rock that was Christ, a training period, and the residing in the Promised Land was the opportunity to use that training. The results, as we know, was a mixed one, with more failure than success and ending with the condemnation to Exile for failure. As predicted by Moses.

The parallel in the life of a believer today is training in the church and serving in the mission field. This can be expanded into a very detailed study. We'll stick to this bare framework for the sake of brevity, yes?

Not only are we saved 'from', but we are also saved 'to'

Act 26:18 to open their eyes so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the dominion of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who have been sanctified by faith in Me.'

Whoever receives the Lord’s salvation is delivered from the punishment and authority of sin.

Sin has no authority. The law has authority.

1 Cor 15:26 "The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law"

Sin, in order to put you to death, gets its power (permission, authority) from the law.

Let's explore what it means "to be saved". In order to be saved you must be delivered from something. What is that something???

In Romans 10:9 Paul states that "If you confess that Jesus is Lord and believe that God raised him from death, you will be saved"....

Again, saved from what?

From this!

Rev 20:11-15

11 And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.

12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.

14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

... men are made in the image of God.

Adam & Eve were made in God's likeness & image. They were immortal...and they perfectly reflected God's agape love.

After Adam & Eve fell they had children. We are fallen children and we are not in God's image.
