  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Jesus calls us to be disciples. A disciple is a student. I will continue my studies at least until I reach a conclusion but I’m sure I will continue after that. I’m not able to accept a religion blindly simply because someone tells me that it is true. I have to study it out for myself.
I'm not saying for you to acceptmit blindly. I'm just saying that trying to piece together a theology and seeing if it matches Orthodoxy doesn't work. That's why there's 60,000 Protestant Denominations. I'm suggesting you look at Orthodoxy in its entirety to see if it is correct. I'm suggesting you rethink your approach.

This may be somewhat the answer I am looking for.

So then Orthodoxy may not be a good fit for me?
Orthodoxy is a good fit for everyone. But it is not Protestant. It does not change for our whims or personal preferences.

how would you be out of place?

This is the same problem I have at my current church and part of the reason I want to leave. I am a sabbath keeper and the church does not teach this. So I don’t fit as their theology does not match my beliefs.

That’s exactly what I am trying to do.

As a sabbath keeper how would Orthodoxy be a good fit for me? I have no plans to alter my beliefs.

That's the thing... It's not a relevant question to us. We are not wrapped in Protestant verbage. We keep the Sabbath as others have explained. However, as you would define keeping the Sabbath, no we do not. We are not Adventist in our theology

So you keep it in your own way but you do not rest according to the 4th commandment?

Regarding Sunday maybe, but we have had problems with Rome regarding the Sabbath almost from the very beginning!

Interesting. Shows how much I care about this subject although this is a learning experience. Thank you!

What are your beliefs with regards to the sabbath?

Are you trying to retain your Jewish heritage? I don’t think the Church demands you to let go of your Jewish practices. Would you prefer if the Church kept the sabbath like you do?

I am Jewish but I keep the sabbath because Jesus commands us to obey the commandments.

I keep the sabbath in the same manner as the Jews by resting from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday. I also try to spend this time emphasizing worship, study, and communion with Jesus Christ.

My method of keeping the sabbath is similar to SDA or Messianic Christians.

Army Matt explained our belief in detail. I'm not sure what you want.

How did he explain it in detail? With his short one line answers?

All he told me was that Jesus rested in the tomb on Saturday so you honor that.

That doesn’t seem like a very detailed answer.

If that’s what edifies you, I don’t think it’s a big deal. So far, I’ve not read anything that condemns sabbath keeping.

It’s possible that it is a theologumenon.

the fasts are relaxed on the Sabbath the same way they are on the Lord's Day. It is a day of rest with anticipation and preparation for the Eucharist.

Jesus said all the law hangs on two commandments. If we are striving to keep those two then we are keeping the Sabbath.

Maybe you might want to get a copy of this book or see if your university library could get it. I have not read it but I would think Fr James probably discusses the sabbath:
