  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

So blind allegiance then?

We like to call it "Illumined in Christ" when we receive the Chrism, so like the blind man we now see.

What makes you so sure that you are in the church with correct theology?

We call it Orthodox theology. Why are you so interested in converting?

Well that seems he may be suggesting sabbath keeping. But is this Orthodox doctrine church wide or simply the recommendation of a single parish? The Priest I have contacted isn’t seeming to give this same kind of answer.

Let me ask you, how do YOU keep it?

So you don’t wish to agree with your churches theology?
The Church IS our theology. When I converted to Orthodoxy it was an acceptance of the one true historical Church in all things. Truth is not given to us cafeteria style. Though there are areas where agreement isn't necessary, there are not areas where we disagree with the Tradition of the Church. Honestly, I had to come to the place where I realized that I cannot possibly create truth in my mind. I don't mean any disrespect but that seems to be what you are trying to do. You have chosen what you like and are trying to fit your odd shaped theological piece into an Orthodox shaped hole. You will find that Orthodox parishes and priests are generally welcoming and warm, but you will ultimately have to struggle with the greater truth.

That is the Orthodox position, anything else is wrong...

Well I am still receiving various answers here so it is seeming to me that the Orthodox may not have a clear cut position Church wide.

That's the thing... It's not a relevant question to us. We are not wrapped in Protestant verbage. We keep the Sabbath as others have explained. However, as you would define keeping the Sabbath, no we do not. We are not Adventist in our theology

Because liturgy, by definition is "work," and that would violate the OT definition sabbath would it not? In other words, I would not be keeping the sabbath by going to liturgy on the sabbath.

Why didn't you just ask, "How do Orthodox spend their Saturdays?"

I am a student of theology. I attended Calvary Chapel Bible College. I’m not able to accept a Churches doctrine merely because they tell me it is correct. I have to study it thoroughly for myself and find out if I believe that the doctrine is true.

No, my aim here is to find out if I will be out of place in the Orthodox Church because I am a sabbath keeper.

From the argument that I am receiving here that may very well be the case.

how would you be out of place?

With Orthodoxy you need to look at the complete picture, not just the typical Protestant line items. It is a completely different worldview in which Protestant labels do not exist

I basically did.
We do whatever we need on Saturdays and then most of us meet in the evening for vespers/Matins. At midnight we begin a complete fast in preparation for The Eucharist on Sunday.
No one is going to check what you do on Saturday. That is up to you... unless you try to prosletyze others into your personal conviction. There are no teachings demanding rest on Saturday

Jesus calls us to be disciples. A disciple is a student. I will continue my studies at least until I reach a conclusion but I’m sure I will continue after that. I’m not able to accept a religion blindly simply because someone tells me that it is true. I have to study it out for myself.

In regards to the Sabbath, the Papists and we share the same view, pretty much which is why I posted it.

Regarding Sunday maybe, but we have had problems with Rome regarding the Sabbath almost from the very beginning!
