Here is my bad exegesis from another thread. Enjoy.
There was a rich man who was dressed in purple...The rich man then died and was buried in hell. Since purple is the color supporting homosexuality, obviously the rich man was gay. Thus according to Luke 16, homosexuals go straight to hell.

It's a parable.
Jesus used a character -RICH MAN- and someone they could relate the righteous man to -LAZARUS- in his parable.

Logically it is a parable.

It means exactly what it says. The rich man died and was alive in the fire in agony. Just like Jesus stated.

LUKE 16:27 "Then he said, 'I beg you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father's house,
28 for I have five brothers, that he may testify to them, lest they also come to this place of torment.' "

The fact that the rich man has five brothers is a vital clue to his true symbolic identity. Judah, the progenitor of the Jews, was the son of Jacob through Leah (Gen. 29:35). He had five full-blooded brothers: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Issachar, and Zebulun (Gen. 35:23).

While the significance of this seemingly pointless detail has been neglected by scholars throughout the centuries, you can be certain that it did not escape the notice of the Pharisees and scribes to which Yeshua was speaking. They thoroughly knew their history and were extremely proud of their heritage. Yeshua wanted those self-righteous Pharisees to know exactly who he was referring to with this parable.
This detail cements the identity of the rich man as the House of Judah, the Jews!

God surely wasn't telling stories to entertain us, it is an important warning.

Why can we believe the account of the flood or even creation of man itself but not this story? How do we know its only a parable? What evidence do we have to prove its only a parable and not an account of something that actually happened?

I think the circumstantial evidence is overwhelming.
We can still take an important warning from it, just not the surface only meaning. Read LilLamb's link. The guy makes an excellent case for some good & deep insights. It isn't an attack on Christianity.

The story of the rich man and Lazarus is without doubt one of the most misunderstood of all the stories in the Bible. Is it a parable, or an actual statement of facts concerning life beyond the grave? It is strenuously denied by most evangelists that this story, as told by Christ, could be a parable.

They hold that this is not a parable because it starts out in narrative form. It is argued, because it reads, "there was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day," that Christ is speaking here of an actual incident that took place.
