  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

That's depressing if it's true.
Its very true. For some couples.
I don't think that's the case with all married people.
No - of course not.
I'm not married. I'm only 16.
The oldest daughter of my mom's best friend got really depressed when she turned 16 (circa 1970) because back in their home town in the Ozarks, at 16 she would have been considered an old maid - too old to get married ever.

Anyway - I would suggest fixing your profile. It could cause problems if you want to post in the teens or singles forums.

I've heard about teens getting married in hick communities even today. Not bc of a 'shotgun wedding' but bc of a backward mentality like what you're talking about here. Thankfully that's not the mentality where I live! No way would that happen to me. I had originally written something about that but took it out bc it's not on the thread topic. Well this isn't either but oh well. I can't post in singles anyway bc of my age. I can still post in teens, lol. I'll maybe ask tech support maybe for help. I did try to change it but the stupid ads pop up & gets in the way. I don't actually care enough to keep spending time on it. The only ppl who know me here irl already know I'm not married.

k to get back on topic. Maybe for overcoming gluttony it would help if there weren't as many foods he likes in the house. Most ppl aren't going to binge eat stuff like brussel sprouts & broccoli.

I could binge out on brussels sprouts! I eat them for lunch most days. (I love all things cabbage!!!)

Having said that - Happy St Patty's Day (and eat lots of Corned beef and Cabbage!) :)

Some good thoughts in here. Some ... not so much.

My wife is a dietitian. I do some athletic training on the side.

Based on our experience, food/eating is often used to self-medicate. Until you deal with the underlying issue, you'll always struggle. It's easy to say, "Eat less, move more," but the reality is this is not the prescription for behavioral change, i.e. it only treats symptoms, not causes.

OP, ask yourself why you eat. Once you have an answer to that question, you have the beginnings of a way forward.

I need help in overcoming gluttony. I am obese and right now, I am trying to lose weight, but I need help in overcoming this issue. How big a sin is gluttony and can it be overcome? Is gluttony a big sin, or are all sins big sins? I guess this question is kind of like a question about lying, where some tell little white lies or big black lies. Lies are lies whatever color they are. Is it the same with gluttony? Can gluttony make one less of a Christian since I want to lose weight? I believe that because I want to lose weight He convicted me of gluttony, but it is hard to overcome. Is gluttony really about ethics or morality since this is supposed to go under ethics and morality? How should gluttons fat or thin be treated and should fat gluttons be viewed or treated any different than thin gluttons?

Try a ketogenic diet, you will see results fast enough to keep you motivated and once you cut out sugars the cravings will go away.

Everyone deserves to be treated with respect unless they're jerks to people.

According to this new study (http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/oby.21538/epdf) that followed contestants from "The Biggest Loser" for 6 years after their initial weight loss, the more you lose, the more your metabolism will slow down and more depressingly stay down, even if you regain the weight. Once you get fat, it won't ever be easy to stay slim - it's possible, but not easy.

I think it's clear by now that dieting alone won't do it - it's a permanent lifestyle change that becomes harder as you get older.

I think its important to have some regular physical activities that you really like, and not just suffer through.

Cycling is good because it can be about exploring and seeing the world around you. Plus it can be social too. In fact, I'm gonna go ride right now.

(Or maybe I'll wait til the rain passes).

Gluttony, like lust, avarice, pride, wrath, sloth and envy, was characterised by the early church fathers as one of the seven deadly sins. There is no getting round that; with a billion people in the world malnourished, I confess I don't have much sympathy for gluttons. Give the money you spend on unhealthy food away to people who need it more. If you want to lose weight, eat less, and better, food, and exercise more. It's no big trick, just do it. You'll feel better for it.

Cheers, Strivax.

I agree.

To me, one should focus less on infatuating on what they are eating and more on increasing physical activity and increasing their fitness level.

When one becomes more physically fit, one side effect is increasing insulin sensativity, which in turn, reduces sugar cravings and a need to eat.

On the contrary, my cats, when I had them, preferred to sit on me than on the couch. :sigh: They were a hindrance to getting up - who can disturb a purring, furry creature camped out on one's lap? Although, being Siamese, they did like to rumble and being so loud, they got their way, much to the annoyance of my downstairs neighbors.

Have to respond to this.

I rented my upstairs apartment to an overweight girl. A few months into the lease she asked if she could have a cat. I allowed it as cats are generally quiet. She got two from the shelter and they bounce all over the place, especially at night, waking me up. I told her to take them back and get a quiet cat. She said "They are my babies" and wouldn't part with them. I told her if she can't keep them quiet I won't renew her lease. She put them in the bathroom overnight but she gets up at 4:00 am and lets them out, waking me up. I won't renew her lease. Damn cats.

I just heard a PBS radio program (has to be true) showing strong evidence that your body "has a mind of it's own", and can actually overcome the will of your mind. If true, and I think there's much truth to it, then you have a real battle of wills on your hands. Satan will appeal to the flesh as well as to the mind.

I'm not sure how her weight factors in except you should have been used to noise already.
You allowed her in and the cats, so I' don't think you have a case if she objects to your
eviction requests. Which are costly.

As to your sleeping, a normal window fan near your bed creates white noise that will solve the problem.
Likely the judge will agree. Life with renters can be much worse. Evicting drug dealers or prostitutes is hard too.

Not an eviction. I'm just not renewing her lease (in fact I'm allowing her an extra month to find a place). A fan is just another noise that would keep me awake (tried that). I'm a restless and light sleeper, getting my best sleep the last two hours, just when the cats-from-hell are released.

We are all works in progress. I agree what has been said, it helps to try to go after the root of what causes these behaviors, and see if anything can be done.

I know in my own case I have a habit of eating fast and it no doubt contributes to digestive problems I have, I suspect it is a result of psychological trauma and stress, and just not taking time to really reflect on what I am doing and being mindful. Believe it or not many monastics in the middle ages considered eating too fast a sin, and there really is a lot of truth to this. It's not a reason to be worried about your salvation but it is a reason to trust in God more to help us by the means he has provided- the confession of sins, prayer, fellowship, and the sacraments, to fill that inner emptiness with something positive.

I found a low carbohydrate diet helped me lose weight a few years ago. I was just on the edge of medical obesity. I also believe fasting is a good practice- I fast on Wednesdays and Fridays from meat.

You should try complete fasting. Can't hurt, may help.

Or perhaps overeating is a good thing, providing a sense of well-being when all else fails. Patients in nursing homes are often overfed to maintain health, especially bone density. Some are actually having a 'beer day' once a week, which while adding weight greatly improves the overall mood of the residents.

How big a sin is gluttony and can it be overcome?
Yes gluttony is a sin and the doctor will tell you what the consequences are for gluttony. Can it be overcome? Yes. I have found that God does not always do things the way we do things. "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways," Isa 55:9 One thing that can be helpful for losing weight is to think about how the body reacts during times of famine. In some ways the body is geared for feast and famine. Of course the problem is the doctors do not like for people to fast, even though this is the most easy way to lose weight. They say that rapid weight loss can have a lot of negative health consequences. The most I have ever lost in one diet is 140 pounds. If you add up all the many diets in my life I have lost over 500 pounds, usually 20 or 30 pounds at a time. For me IF I wanted to lose a significant amount of weight I would most likely have to pray about it for about 20 or 30 hours. Usually four or five hours at a time. Of course there is really nothing that we can say to God, most of prayer is really a lot of learning how to relax and being quiet before God to hear what He has to say to us. Not that He actually talks to us but He does enlighten us and give us understanding. Once I did lose weight when they prayed for me at church. I was able to diet for a week or two and lose what I needed to lose. Imagine that only a week! As we get older it takes a lot longer then that. Also of course we need to push ourself to exercise. Usually to walk as much as we can. If I could get out and walk for five miles a day weight would not be a problem. Even ride a bicycle for five miles a day. I use to get my son to do four or five miles on his bicycle to help him to keep his weight under control. It is as if that is they way the body was designed to walk a lot. We use to go out to art festivals where we would walk a lot. There was still food there but it did not seem to matter because we were out burning up calories. It maybe best to avoid the festivals that have just beer and food.
