  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I need help in overcoming gluttony. I am obese and right now, I am trying to lose weight, but I need help in overcoming this issue. How big a sin is gluttony and can it be overcome? Is gluttony a big sin, or are all sins big sins? I guess this question is kind of like a question about lying, where some tell little white lies or big black lies. Lies are lies whatever color they are. Is it the same with gluttony? Can gluttony make one less of a Christian since I want to lose weight? I believe that because I want to lose weight He convicted me of gluttony, but it is hard to overcome. Is gluttony really about ethics or morality since this is supposed to go under ethics and morality? How should gluttons fat or thin be treated and should fat gluttons be viewed or treated any different than thin gluttons?
Best place to start is the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association. They try to establish the most healthy diet for us. Is the problem that you do not know how to eat properly or is the problem that you know what and how you should eat but you do not want to follow Godly eating habits. IT MUST be a sin because there is a lot of punishment, obese is a punishment, exp when you consider all the health problems caused by not eating the right food and the right diet and the right amount or servings. Of course you can eat all the veggies you want to eat. You actually lost a small about of weight when you eat veggies. It takes around 800 calories to digest 600 calories worth of veggies. So eat all of them that you want. Of course you have to exercise also.

The choice is to eat right and exercise or get obese and be sick. Then sometimes we can repent on our death bed and God will then revive us and heal us if we start to eat right and exercise. Heart Attack is called the silent killer though and there really is no warning. Even though there is no warning most Heart Attacks is due to fat deposits building up in the blood vessels from eating a high fat diet. For me I can give up eating fatty food a lot easier then I can give up eating sugar. For some foods it takes 10 days for your body to adjust. If you want to give up your sugar binges eat more fiber. Other food adjustments can be accomplished right away or in 5 days.

To many people struggle to control their portions without actually changing their diet and eating right. I do not know of any processed food that is good for you. We do all of our own cooking here. My wife does not even use seasoning in a bottle but she uses fresh herbs and spices like ginger and garlic and stuff like that. Mostly I eat a lot of soup because I just do not like to eat veggies so I have to cook them a lot before I can eat them. Some of the nutrition is lost when you over cook food but there is still enough left that they do not worry to much about food being over cooked. Cooked food in general is quite a bit better for you the uncooked food. They also recommend low fat or skin yogurt because we need calcium and to get our mineral natural in our food is a lot better then to take supplements. I have a problem in that I am on a very salt restricted diet and a lot of food is either low fat or law salt. You can not get both. For example I can get low fat cheese or low salt cheese but I can not get both.

You could start with using smaller plates.
In some cases a serving is a shot glass. For example if I want peanuts then I can have one serving or two ounces. I use a lot of the Dixie three ounce cups for servings. I try to get my son to use the 5 ounce cup but that is difficult for him to do. I usually eat off of dessert plates. That way it is difficult to put to much food on them. Even I have little 5 ounce bowels I use. I had lost 150 pounds at one time but I gained back around 20 or 30 of it. Sometimes the best we can do is not to gain weight, then there are days we can follow our healthy food diet and loose a little bit.

Regarding your questions on the sin of gluttony, and other spiritual issues, the Catholic catechism is always a good source of teaching and thinking, even if you're not Catholic but still Christian. It's easily accessible via the Vatican website. Here's what it says about the proliferation of mortal sins (7 grave sins or 7 deadly sins) vs. venial sins, and other observations:

V. THE PROLIFERATION OF SIN

1865 Sin creates a proclivity to sin; it engenders vice by repetition of the same acts. This results in perverse inclinations which cloud conscience and corrupt the concrete judgment of good and evil. Thus sin tends to reproduce itself and reinforce itself, but it cannot destroy the moral sense at its root.

1866 Vices can be classified according to the virtues they oppose, or also be linked to the capital sins which Christian experience has distinguished, following St. John Cassian and St. Gregory the Great. They are called "capital" because they engender other sins, other vices.138 They are pride, avarice, envy, wrath, lust, gluttony, and sloth or acedia.

1867 The catechetical tradition also recalls that there are "sins that cry to heaven": the blood of Abel,139 the sin of the Sodomites,140 the cry of the people oppressed in Egypt,141 the cry of the foreigner, the widow, and the orphan,142 injustice to the wage earner.143

1868 Sin is a personal act. Moreover, we have a responsibility for the sins committed by others when we cooperate in them:

- by participating directly and voluntarily in them;

- by ordering, advising, praising, or approving them;

- by not disclosing or not hindering them when we have an obligation to do so;

- by protecting evil-doers.

1869 Thus sin makes men accomplices of one another and causes concupiscence, violence, and injustice to reign among them. Sins give rise to social situations and institutions that are contrary to the divine goodness. "Structures of sin" are the expression and effect of personal sins. They lead their victims to do evil in their turn. In an analogous sense, they constitute a "social sin."144

IN BRIEF

1870 "God has consigned all men to disobedience, that he may have mercy upon all" (Rom 11:32).

1871 Sin is an utterance, a deed, or a desire contrary to the eternal law (St. Augustine, Faust 22:pL 42, 418). It is an offense against God. It rises up against God in a disobedience contrary to the obedience of Christ.

1872 Sin is an act contrary to reason. It wounds man's nature and injures human solidarity.

1873 The root of all sins lies in man's heart. The kinds and the gravity of sins are determined principally by their objects.

1874 To choose deliberately - that is, both knowing it and willing it - something gravely contrary to the divine law and to the ultimate end of man is to commit a mortal sin. This destroys in us the charity without which eternal beatitude is impossible. Unrepented, it brings eternal death.

1875 Venial sin constitutes a moral disorder that is reparable by charity, which it allows to subsist in us.

1876 The repetition of sins - even venial ones - engenders vices, among which are the capital sins.

Self-mastery? As in "Master of Your Domain"?:preach: --- Seinfeld

Having watched only maybe two episodes of Seinfeld, I'm not exactly sure, but he was referring to what I think he was referring to, if TOTAL self-mastery is required to lose weight, then I guess I'm destined to end up a 400 pounder.

I'll settle for mastery of my fork.

Eat less and eat healthy, excercise regularily and get enough sleep and fresh air.
Getting a pesky, entitled dog that loves walkies helps a lot as well. You can usually talk a person out of walking in the park - it's cold, it's raining, a really good episode is on - but pesky dogs don't listen, they just whine and moan until you give in and get up and go out. You can get one at the local shelter already housebroken and ready to go.

Getting a pet just to lose weight seems like a bit superficial. What are you going to do when you are slim, return it?

But if you want a dog anyway, it's an added benefit.

No, you want to stay slim and not revert.

Yes, you have to want it anyway. To love and be loved, even if it is just a cur (a warm, sweet cuddly thing that wiggles with delight at the sight of you, even if you are a glutton and a sinner).

You could also get a cat. It isn't going to want to walk, but it will sure hinder you from using your couch. :D

On the contrary, my cats, when I had them, preferred to sit on me than on the couch. :sigh: They were a hindrance to getting up - who can disturb a purring, furry creature camped out on one's lap? Although, being Siamese, they did like to rumble and being so loud, they got their way, much to the annoyance of my downstairs neighbors.

People should be treated with compassion. There, but for the grace of God...
Reminds me of the fantastic song "The Sad Cafe" by The Eagles [great sax solo by David Sanborn]:

The clouds rolled in and hid that shore
Now that Glory Train, it don't stop here no more
Now I look at the years gone by,
And wonder at the powers that be.
I don't know why fortune smiles on some
And lets the rest go free

A good friend of mine quotes this song often because it does such a poetic job of describing capricious fate. And your point DaisyDay is "Be careful and compassionate. It might be you next, headed for The Sad Cafe."

Ah yes, that song.

The very next verse of it gives more wisdom:

"Maybe the time has drawn the faces I recall.
But things in this life change very slowly
If they ever change at all.
There's no use in asking why,
It just turned out that way.
So meet me at midnight, baby,
Inside the Sad Cafe."

And it's the truth: things in this life change very slowly if they ever change at all.
Losing weight, or quitting smoking, or drinking, or drug abuse, or swearing, or meat eating, or really any other habit, good bad or indifferent, is hard. It's hard because the lives we lived are lived under a steady pressure - of biology, of aging, of expectations, of work, of debt, of demands, and of fears. We don't own our times, and we while we occupy our bodies, for a good long time we hope, we don't own them either. We control very little; there is only the illusion of control most of the time. Olympic runners die suddenly of heart attacks. Healthy people are stricken with cancer. And most people are hit with economic distress and emotional pain.

From our youths we walk forward in life against a countercurrent of nature. First it's like a trickling stream or a gentle breeze, but as we become adults the current increases, the wind increases - our responsibilities rise and we do not control others, or the economy, or our bodies. And as the pressures rise we find little things that relieve them for a moment. Aspirin, or a drink, some comfort food, a cigarette, sex. But these things dull us to the pain and the pressure. They don't stop the current, they don't reduce the wind, they just make us feel it less, for a moment. And in time they add to it. Our bodies thicken. Little red veins appear in our noses. We develop a cough. We become emotionally dead.

In time, the damage done itself becomes a burden on us, a source of stress, even while it remains a source of relief. And of course life doesn't stop with its own pressures, imperceptibly increasing day by die, the wind rises to a gale, the water deepens and the current increases.

Ultimately, we fail. We lose our footing in the flood and are washed away. The wind rises to a hurricane and blows us away. We die, pass out of our bodies, and go on to what's next. How will we be judged for these things by our Creator? Less harshly than we judge ourselves, for the most part. The addicted hate themselves more than God hates them. The pressures that led to the addiction never go away. The scars and the pain - all of that - remain. The beginning of healing is for the human to stop judging himself or herself harshly - the world is going to do that anyway: you're fat, you're an alcoholic, you're a degenerate smoker, you're a pothead, you're a [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse], you're a [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse], and so on. Of course, every single person making that judgment is himself fat, or alcoholic, or a smoker, or pothead, or sexually twisted, or, worst of all, a judgmental fool.

For Jesus never said: The fat shall not enter the Kingdom of God. Or the smokers shall be thrown into the lake of fire. He told people that if they forgave, they would be forgiven. But he DID say "Judge not, lest ye be judged." And he did say that God would not forgive the unforgiving.

So if you've sought shelter against the current of life in some bodily vice, sure it's a weakness - men are weak - sure you want to fix it - but the place to start fixing it is to stop hating yourself for it. You didn't set the storm in your face, and you didn't make the flood. So don't take on the personal responsibility for the world having been so bad to you, and for the pressures being so terrible. The world is a fallen place, and it's not getting better. You can reduce some of the pressure on yourself, but only if you love yourself. That's why to do it: love, for yourself. If you stand there hating yourself for the anesthetics you take (be they food or alcohol, tobacco or drugs or sex) in order to dull some of the pain, you're just inflicting more pain. It's not YOUR fault that the world is a disaster. You're just trying to survive in it. And you can make your path a little easier, for a little while, if you do less of whatever it is that you were doing. A little less can lead to less and less. You could get thinner, you could break some of the vices (though they will always be there). And be a little happier with yourself, a little bit less in pain...until the current drowns you and the tornado kills you anyway. Nobody gets out of here alive, so don't make your life worse by hating yourself for your weaknesses along the way. We all have terrible weaknesses. The worst ones are being judgmental and unforgiving. Why are they the worst? Because Jesus said they were. If you think otherwise, you're fighting with God, and you're wrong. So stop it. YOU might think your belly, or your smoking, or your porn addiction, is much worse than being judgmental and unforgiving, but Jesus said otherwise. Don't add to your miseries by attacking HIM. Just accept that you're a human and really don't know much, stop beating up on yourself. Forgive yourself and others. And try. Things in this life rarely change at all, but if there is something you want to change, that's all you can do.

"Well those drifter's days are past me now,
I've got so much more to think about.
Deadlines and commitments,
What to leave in,
What to leave out.
Against the wind.
I'm still running against the wind.
I'm older now, but still running against the wind." - Seeger

Of course, every single person making that judgment is himself fat, or alcoholic, or a smoker, or pothead, or sexually twisted, or, worst of all, a judgmental fool.

Something just happened to what I wrote. There is an automatic blocking program that censors words. Of course, I see at the end that "you're a judgmental fool" did not get censored, even though Jesus said that he who says to his brother "you fool" faces damnation.

So guess what? I'm done here. I'm done with this site. I understand the desire, on the one hand, to keep it clean. I also understand, however, that reality is not clean, and that one cannot express the truths about human nature that God knows, and that men have to grapple with, if it must be expressed in some bowldlerized manner aimed at protecting the delicate sensitivities of puritans who are whitewashed tombs.

So I'm done here. This will be my last post on this site.

I will not accept the censorship of my speech - what I said needed to be said in exactly the way it was said.
The site will not change, and I will not spend my time on it because it is unacceptable.

Farewell.

Vicomte13, well said! There is wisdom in these words. Too bad the "Puritan Police" censored you. Disappointing, to be sure.

Cigars aren't healthier but if you're married how come sex isn't a better alternative? Not that you can have sex as much as you eat but you can look forward to it right? Or maybe just find other things that are enjoyable to take your mind off food. I'll pig out when I'm bored sometimes.
Well - for some married couples, "looking forward to it" is a cruel joke. We would starve to death if we ate as often as having sex. (like once every 3-6 months) Sometimes people eat to make up for a lack of sex, especially "comfort foods."

You are listed as married. I am sure you know about that.

That's depressing if it's true. I don't think that's the case with all married people. Lol, I'm not married. I'm only 16. I was just playing around w settings from my phone. It's annoying bc the ads pop up & get in the way. Edit - my point was finding some other healthy activity to divert attn away from overeating.
