Hi Light of East. This should be fun. I attended an Orthodox church for a while when I first became a Christian. The ideal found on the internet is nothing like reality you find in the local parish so, as you probably know, I really don't learn very much. I learned that to be Greek was to be Orthodox and you have to be Russian or Greek to be truly Orthodox. Oh, and "we are Roman Catholic without the Pope" was mentioned more than once. It's a little condensing to imply "I was once believed as you do now, but now I know different." lol

PS: Let's be clear...you are doing exactly what you accuse me of doing. You claim I am quoting the Bible using "Calvinism" well, your doctrinal lens is from the Eastern Orthodox denomination with all it's Neoplatonism.

Fair dinkum......as we do discuss these things, I shall strive to prove my points in reference to the Scriptures. Having said that, I have used the Scriptures to show you that Jesus said that Abel was righteous and that there were righteous people in the OT, contrary to Calvinist teaching. I shall await your reply.

BTW, I was told the same thing when I visited an Anglican parish with my husband (that they were essentially just like Catholics but without the Pope) which pretty much sealed my husband's determination not to ever visit again.

If you happened to attend a parish with a lot of cradle Orthodox (which I'm guessing is likely, since it was associated with ethnicity), one thing I have found them particularly weak in is their understanding of various denominations. Quite a few immigrant Orthodox really do believe that every church really believes the same thing, and the only difference is language and culture. This unfortunately can make them less welcoming at times than one might desire, because they really think the only reason one might come to an ethnic Orthodox Church is because they are that ethnicity. Many of them think that Baptists, Lutherans, Catholics, Methodists, and Pentecostals are really all the same, and simply something passed down in the family, since the understanding of "Church" and "Christianity" for most of them can be one and the same. They are often truly shocked when I explain the differing belief or practice of this denomination or that.

I think you are also misunderstanding Matt's explanation of the natural inclination of man being to be good, and our UNnatural inclination being to sin.

God created all things good, and that was His intention for us. However, with the fall of mankind, creation became infected with sin. We don't believe that we each bear the GUILT for this, but we are all under the curse of death as a result. We are all dying, physically, from the moment we are born. Not only that, but we ARE influenced by our sin-infected world, and everyone will sin. We all also have our natural inclinations twisted into unnatural passions, which cause us to sin, and we fight against this (the flesh) all our lives.

But sin is an UNnatural condition - not the one created by God. Just as death is UNnatural. God did not create us to die. But because of the fall, sin AND death entered the world, and we are all subject to both. But not because of God's design, which is, I believe, why Matt says it is "unnatural".

There are quite a few people in all denominations and in the Church who don't understand the particulars of their chosen belief. They were born there, they will die there, and that's that.
This is true. I did not mean to say it didn't happen elsewhere. But for cradle Orthodox, born in Orthodox countries, it may be more common than the US, where it is difficult to avoid knowing at least of the great differences that can exist.

Greece essentially avoided the Reformation, as well as Catholicism. The Church has simply been the Church, since the times of the ones mentioned in Scripture, some of which still exist. Russia's Orthodox history, though only half as long, is still pretty strong in ethnic memory.

or this actually. what I dispute is how you read those verses and you conclusion that this means our natural inclination is to sin. Orthodoxy would say that is the unnatural inclination that men are caught in and willingly choose. nothing of what you posted goes against Orthodox teaching.

plus if you only quote the verses that speak of men's sin, it does paint a bleak picture. there is more to salvation and sin then just what you quoted (as I am sure you know).

Hey folks, just a few minutes to post, then I'm out. I apologize for not taking the time to read my post over or take proper care with grammar or spelling but I am pressed for time.

Not true. Our understanding is based on an entirely different understanding (i.e. interpretation) of the Sacred Scriptures than Western thought. I do not mean to come off as rude, but if anything, I found when I was studying the Apostolic and Ancient faith that it is Western thought which is out of line with Scripture. I was appalled to find out how fast and loose Calvinists played with the original Greek in order to maintain their doctrine of forensic justification, for instance.

Cardinal Newman believed that as well. He mentioned that to look into church history is to cease to be Protestant. I have read church history and disagree. I am no scholar but disagree with the Eastern and Roman view of history. Where you see “the Church” I see “the State Church” ruled by secular society. I’ve posted numerous times but the whole Iconoclast Controversy is a perfect example of secular authority dictating to the State Church what to believe. The issue with the Greek is a fairly simple one: the Greek church has impregnated the language with Greek philosophy.

No it doesn't. Calvinists have yet to show one verse which shows us that the image of God was effaced from mankind's nature.

I thought you were Reformed? We do not deny that the image of God remains jsut that it has been effaced. We believe it was marred. That every thought is weighed down by sin.

First grave ontological error. The West approaches sin as if sin is passed from generation to generation by sexual reproduction. This was Augustine's error, and by the time his teaching reached Constantinople and the fathers of the Church reacted in horror to it, it had already taken root. The Eastern Fathers saw sin and its effects in a different light, a distortion of our natures rather than the idea of being "dead."

And that’s the rub isn’t it…Augustine, affirmed in the West, denied in the East. Much of the misunderstanding the East is due to the lack of ability to read Augustine. He was not given a fair shake and why would he be? There were two sides of the Empire jockeying for political influence and religious power. The State Church in the East, now Eastern Orthodox, would not give Augustine a fair reading. I quoted scripture that referenced our spiritual state as “dead.”

That is David's confession. It is dishonest to try to impose that upon all mankind. And it doesn't fit other Scriptures, which Calvinists conveniently ignore:

Abel is called "righteous." Mat 23:35 That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.

David’s confession is a truism. To isolate one quote from the rest of the evidence is to disallow scripture to give us it’s true meaning. Why was Abel called “righteous?” His offering was made by faith. Instead of isolating a passage use the holy scriptures to gives us the meaning.

“By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.” Hebrews 11

Not only that, but the Scriptures speak constantly of men and women who are righteous. How is this possible under the Calvinist paradigm that all are "depraved sinners?" It is only possible by ignoring texts that don't jive with your chosen understanding of man, sin, and God.

Why are they called “righteous?” Hebrews 11 tells us it’s “by faith” one is declared righteous. Faith in God that He has provided for them the way of salvation that is what is in sight.

Not what it says, sir! Perhaps you would do well to take off your presuppositional glasses and read what is actually said there:

Gen 8:21 And the LORD smelled a sweet savour; and the LORD said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man's sake; for the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done.

Imagination is not the same as ontological state. From our youth we are assailed by temptation and evil thoughts, but that does not mean that the heart itself is ontologically evil. It is, in Eastern thought, inclined to evil by the effects of sin, but it is not evil itself.

I know it is easier to use unbiblical philosophical categories but as I have already mentioned, the weight of scripture supports the presupposition you claim I have, my argument takes more than one verse Sir to grasp. If you continue to isolate the verses out of the greater context, the context of scripture, you’ll miss the point. The void in understanding will be filled with the imagination of mankind which is evil. From whence does the imagination of man commence? The ontological error belongs to you. Reference a Bible dictionary and see that “imagination” is speaking of the shaping of a thought, which is evil…

The Greek word in Scripture is "regeneration" (palinogenesis) and is found only twice in the NT. It is NOT an anthropological word. Do you see the root "genesis" there? In both instances, it has do to with the re-genesising of the cosmos. It describes Christ's work of starting a New Covenant with a new genesis which began at the Cross. (palino=again, genesis=creation). Christ is the Last Adam (1 Corin 15:45) who has "again created" the cosmos and God's creation by His work on the Cross. Calvinists are a braggy bunch who act like they are the hoi poloi of biblical interpretation, but when I actually look at their work, they should be deeply embarrassed for not finding things that the average Joe SixPack Stupid (which is me) finds with diligent study.

What I find deeply embarrassing is the utter contempt for the biblical concept of regeneration and the commitment to an exegetical fallacy you and other Easterners make. The concept is biblical as I have demonstrated above. Re-creation, regeneration from trespasses and sin, the concept is there. The “braggy bunch” make claims such as, “The Church has simply been the Church, since the times of the ones mentioned in Scripture, some of which still exist.” ( @~Anastasia~ ) and refuse to admit their opinions could actually be wrong. Instead of looking like the Apostolic church in all it’s simplicity they look like a Byzantine Court with pomp and ceremony found nowhere in the earliest record: the Scripture. Instead of being the church mentioned in scripture they are a relic of a State Church, a fallen empire…with the persecutors, namely Islam and Communionism, causing them to turn into themselves and putrefy.

Again, reading into the text that which you wish to prove. The text of Ephesians does not say that there is natural darkness and hardness of heart. What it does say is that Gentiles have had their understanding darkened. Scripture elsewhere states that when we are reproved and choose evil, we harden our hearts against the truth, much like what Pharaoh did. You are trying to make a case from silence.

Don’t get me wrong I do appreciate your responses. I really don’t have a lot of time for prolonged posts either but I will make try to make time to defend the very heart of the Gospel. I'm not defending a church or ecclesiastical hierarchy but the Gospel itself.

How does God constantly speak of "the righteous" when all men are only evil, utterly depraved, and corrupt? How does Jesus call Abel "righteous" when according to Calvinist doctrine, Abel was an utterly depraved sinner? The same for Zacharias and Elizabeth? Such does not bode well for Calvinist teaching.

I have answered this above; “by faith” people are considered righteous and this is not due to something inherent in them, it is due to Jesus Christ alone.

Now, you did state that you attended a PCA church, but you seem to have misunderstood the doctrine of total depravity or better put man’s inability. It seems you are creating a strawman from the world “depravity.” To help out the reader of this thread I’ll quote the popular teacher R. C. Sproul who explains what is meant by depravity:

“…total depravity does not mean utter depravity. We often use the term total as a synonym for utter or for completely, so the notion of total depravity conjures up the idea that every human being is as bad as that person could possibly be. You might think of an archfiend of history such as Adolf Hitler and say there was absolutely no redeeming virtue in the man, but I suspect that he had some affection for his mother. As wicked as Hitler was, we can still conceive of ways in which he could have been even more wicked than he actually was. So the idea of total in total depravity doesn’t mean that all human beings are as wicked as they can possibly be. It means that the fall was so serious that it affects the whole person. The fallenness that captures and grips our human nature affects our bodies; that’s why we become ill and die. It affects our minds and our thinking; we still have the capacity to think, but the Bible says the mind has become darkened and weakened. The will of man is no longer in its pristine state of moral power. The will, according to the New Testament, is now in bondage. We are enslaved to the evil impulses and desires of our hearts. The body, the mind, the will, the spirit—indeed, the whole person—have been infected by the power of sin.

I like to replace the term total depravity with my favorite designation, which is radical corruption. So what is required for us to be conformed to the image of Christ is not simply some small adjustments or behavioral modifications, but nothing less than renovation from the inside. We need to be regenerated, to be made over again, to be quickened by the power of the Spirit. The only way in which a person can escape this radical situation is by the Holy Spirit’s changing the core, the heart. However, even that change does not instantly vanquish sin. The complete elimination of sin awaits our glorification in heaven.”

PS.....it is not the Bible you are quoting. It is the Calvinist interpretation. I always find it interesting to see two Protestants going at it with each other over some arcane point of doctrine, each claiming "the Bible says....." to defend themselves and each condemning the other.

I understand that is your view, however, your using a traditionalist understanding. One that is layered with a philosophical tradition that cannot be supported from our earliest record: the Scriptures.

Is it conceivable that we're having an argument between extremes? Calvin believed that our nature is corrupted, but that is still the nature created by God. Again, reading into the text that which you wish to prove. The text of Ephesians does not say that there is natural darkness and hardness of heart. What it does say is that Gentiles have had their understanding darkened.
Calvin certainly believed that creation is good. So you've got to be careful when you talk about natural darkness. It's deeply unnatural, in that it's a violation of the good creation. But Calvin would say that our natures have been corrupted, so that the darkness is now in our nature. One could say in a more Orthodox way that it now infects a nature that was created good. But it's not just that we all happen to do evil. The infection is serious enough that we can never be good, in the sense I note above.

I certainly agree with one of the Orthodox posters that the Bible calls a number of people righteous. But what does it mean? The Reformed objection seems to be that no one is morally perfect, or capable of doing good in a sense that would merit salvation. I.e. no one is righteous on their own.

When people are called righteous in Scripture, I claim that it doesn’t mean they are perfect. It means that they are people of God, who no doubt sin, but repent when they do. But in Reformed terms, these are people who have been justified by faith. They are righteous, but not on their own.

If this is the way the Bible uses righteous, then I think you can reasonably ask whether it makes sense to use the term in a sense that requires one to say that no one is righteous. But this is really an argument about terminology. I doubt that any Orthodox Christian would think there are people who are righteous in the sense that Reformed theology denies (if my wording isn't too convoluted). I suspect that the terminology was already in use in the West at the time.

[You'll note, of course, that I'm a liberal Reformed person.]

What I find deeply embarrassing is the utter contempt for the biblical concept of regeneration and the commitment to an exegetical fallacy you and other Easterners make. The concept is biblical as I have demonstrated above. Re-creation, regeneration from trespasses and sin, the concept is there. The “braggy bunch” make claims such as, “The Church has simply been the Church, since the times of the ones mentioned in Scripture, some of which still exist.” ( @~Anastasia~ ) and refuse to admit their opinions could actually be wrong. Instead of looking like the Apostolic church in all it’s simplicity they look like a Byzantine Court with pomp and ceremony found nowhere in the earliest record: the Scripture. Instead of being the church mentioned in scripture they are a relic of a State Church, a fallen empire…with the persecutors, namely Islam and Communionism, causing them to turn into themselves and putrefy.

That wasn't bragging, that was simply saying that people for untold generations have been born into and raised in the Orthodox faith, which is why many of the ones I personally know don't recognize the wide variety of doctrines out there amongst the denominations.

Oh, by the way, I am not ignorant of other theologies. My faith is not an un examined one. I spent the better part of 40 years in Reformed theology. So yes, as a matter of fact, I went through a very painful period of examining whether my beliefs might not be wrong. Your accusation of me is a bit unfair, but then again, personal attacks don't concern me overmuch, and in all fairness, there is no reason you would have known this.

Just seeing as how you drew my comment into the conversation in this way, I wanted the opportunity to correct the understanding of my meaning.

I have answered this above; “by faith” people are considered righteous and this is not due to something inherent in them, it is due to Jesus Christ alone.

In other words, "imputed righteousness?" I believe this is what you are saying, that man is totally depraved, but if He believes, he is cloaked in the righteousness of Christ to cover his sinfulness before a holy God.

Of course, that is not the meaning of the word "logizomai" (imputed) in Greek.

I will have to say that you may be on firmer ground with the word "regenerate," since I took the time to look it up in Scripture and found that it can have a personal application. So I will have to back away from my former statement regarding this word.

And Scripture states that the Kingdom of God is like a seed, which, when planted into the ground, becomes a great tree. Now first of all, does a seed look anything like the grandeur of a tree? Hardly. Therefore, there is scriptural warrant to expect that the New Covenant congregation of God (aka "the Church") would undergo a transformation from something rather plain and simple to the expression of the Kingdom of God on earth that it is.

Secondly, when the Apostolic Church celebrated the Eucharist as the very Body and Blood of our Lord, it is being a little less than honest to attack the Orthodox faith for not being like the Apostolic Church while you reject the doctrine of the Eucharist because you find it hard to believe.

I hardly think "pomp" is a truly important issue, but if one looks back to the Old Testament and the embroidered work on the curtains and veils of the Tabernacle and Temple, the priests's vestments covered with precious stones, the poles even overlaid with silver, the carvings on the Ark of the Covenant in gold, the brass and gold imlements - God doesn't seem to have a problem with it. Indeed, such things were commanded in the house or worship. And we have very detailed and beautiful frescoes and such from Jewish places of worship, as well as Christian. That doesn't seem the firmest ground from which to attack, especially since these have typically been, just as in Jewish times, free will offerings given to beautify the House of God. And all along there were equal admonishments to give to the poor - that has never been neglected. So ... there hardly seems to be a historical or Scriptural reason to object.

Calvin certainly believed that creation is good. So you've got to be careful when you talk about natural darkness. It's deeply unnatural, in that it's a violation of the good creation. But it's not just that we all happen to do evil. The infection is serious enough that we can never be good, in the sense I note above.

Not much to disagree with Light, I would just point out that when I read the passage I do not see the Roman or Byzantine State Church, I see a simple gathering of believers that increase in number over time. This passage doesn't point to any specific hierarchy or ecclesiastical body.

sorry, JM, but that was a whopper of a post. all I really saw in there was a lot of Scripture, and then you basically saying that you are reading Scripture correctly because you are reading it correctly. also, to say we in the East deny regeneration is incorrect, especially if you hear any sacrament of the Church (especially baptism).

Hey Matt, I believe I said more than just I'm right because I'm right. lol I actually pointed to scripture, offered other scripture to give further explanation. Light of the East and you seem to have a differing perspectives. I'm sure you share "Orthodox" worship styles but he is definitely taking a different point of view.

But, I understand time is an issue, for us all.
