Contact (based on the Carl Sagan novel) is probably my favorite movie -- as a devout follower of science fiction, and a believer in extraterrestrial life (created in the image of God).

Others worthy of mention -

Truman Show
Fargo
Napoleon Dynamite
The Village
Independence Day
Falling Down

What is your favorite?

I'm not good at picking favorites, so here's my top five list. Not really in order, it depends on what mood I am in.

1. Casablanca
The perfection of movie-making. The kind of movie I don't mind watching repeatedly, because there is so much in it to see. But Rick shoulda gotten on the plane.

2. Schindler's List
which I cannot watch without crying

3. Sunset Blvd
Loved this one when I was an up and coming actor- the tragic romance of this film is just right.

4. Dr Strangelove
Quirky kind of reality that is just bizarre enough to be unsettlingly accurate.

5. City Lights
My favorite Chaplin movie, and the soundtrack is one of my favorite songs, so two for two.

Others worthy of note:
Contact
The Body
Vertigo
Rear Window
Jesus Christ, Superstar
Maltese Falcon
Amelie
Pan's Labyrinth (which I just saw- may be the most important film of the decade, but I'm still deciding what to think of it.)

I'm going to jump on the Shawshank bandwagon here. I don't think that I can call it, or any single movie my absolute favorite of all time because I like many vastly different kinds of movies for vastly different reasons.

The Green Mile I like too, almost as much as Shawshank and for very similar reasons.

My favorite movie that no one has ever heard of is Joshua, with Tony Goldwin.

In terms of movies from books, The Firm was one of my favorites in terms of being faithful to the book, until the LOTR series came out.Never has a movie from a book matched the pictures in my head that the book created as closely as with LOTR. Narnia is a darn close second though.

Not so fond of the movie, but the book it was adapted from is among my favorites.

It is often the case that when I read a book first and then see the movie, my impression of the movie is somewhat low, with exceptions as mentioned in my first post.

In perusing all of the little symbol thingies next to your character, I see that you are a Lutheran. Have you seen movie Luther the one made in 2003 with Joseph Fiennes?

There was much about him that I never knew that I found fascinating. I do recognize that the movie may not be entirely factual though.

LOVE that movie!

I really love the Lutheran church, and the movie helped me see Luther's accomplishments and contributions in context.

I have put 'Luther' on our dvd rental list ... thanks for the suggestion!
(There was also an older version from 1973. Does it compare to the 2003 one?)
