  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Name a nation greater than the US and why

He told me I should stay on my side of the Pacific. I politely reminded him that he is technically on my side of the Pacific because he is discussing American politics. Nothing ugly about it.

And I was specifically referring to your attitude about guns....but I think you knew that...

But I'll make this one: Wars aren't won by air forces. Wars are won by taking the ground and holding it. You haven't won the war until you can stand a 19-year-old with a rifle on their ground unopposed.

According to US military doctrine, yes. Soviet military doctrine says wars are won by maximizing casualties inflicted on the enemy.

If people want to kill someone, they don't need a gun to do it. Ask anyone from the UK about their knife problem. Guns are an important part of American Republic and they are not going away in my lifetime. In fact, the only reason why the United States has an Independence day and we don't have pictures of the Queen on our currency is because of guns.

Rubbish.

Soviet military doctrine may have included that as an objective at certain times, but so did US doctrine. As mentioned, look at Afghanistan as a Russian example and Vietnam as a US example - specifically the war of attrition policy approach of General Westmorland through the mid to late 1960s. However, attritional mass-casualty style warfare was not a feature of Soviet military doctrine.

I'll quote the US Army's field manual assessment of Soviet military doctrine:

Soviet military doctrine is based on an elaborate, integrated system of thought. The doctrinal concepts are precisely defined, and each has its place in a hierarchy of importance that corresponds to its military decision-making level. The system deals with all military issues, ranging from national defense policy down to platoon tactics.

I don’t believe in the overall picture there is a greater nation that the US.

Does that mean it is perfect? No

But it’s the best in the world.

Don’t agree, ok. Which one is better and why.

Any country mentioned by name in the Bible is Greater than the US, using the metric of "number of times mentioned in the bible" as a measure of greatness. For example, Ethiopia.

And, as I said before, you can keep your love for guns on your side of the Pacific thanks. I’m much happier to live in a land that doesn’t shoot more than 30,000 of its people every year...

Why is their love for country good and my love for country bad?

Your love for America isn’t bad. You’ve encountered people who disagree and voice their differences.

I experience America as a positive place that I’m proud to live in. But that feeling is based on realities which may not exist for the next person.

For me, America is great and for someone else that may not hold true. Neither are wrong. We’re addressing the subject from a personal perspective. We can’t expect agreement. :)

Well, I cannot argue that Australia has a much lower homicide rate than the United States. But the problem isn't guns. The problems are the issues that would lead a person to use a gun to take the life of another human being. Even if 100% of the guns in the United States where to magically vanish, I would expect a marginal change in homicide rates.

Uh yes. Name me one attrocity comitted against its natives.
Name me one meaningful long term interaction they have had?
I fully admit that on the technicality you are right. I just don't think that comparing what is essentially no relationship to one of hundreds repression with poor treatment is the commenserate with a colonial power engaging respectfully and frequently with the indiginius population.

Are you saying that killing each other is just a quaint American cultural tradition? Take away the guns and you'll still be killing each other at the same rate?

No, I am saying what I said in my post. The problem isn't guns. The problem are the things that lead to gun violence...period. You take the guns out of America and people will find other ways of killing each other. Meaning that if all the guns in America were to disappear, the graph would look like this:

What I was actually saying was that NO indiginous community has ever been treated well.

There is no great nation. They're all bad in one way or another (or rather, a few dozen ways). Get over yourselves.

Probably for the same reasons that people kill each other everywhere else. I will add that there are 10 reasons not to live in Australia:
1. Box Jellyfish
2. Irukandji Jellyfish
3. Bull Sharks
4. Eastern Brown Snakes
5. Sydney funnel web spider
6. Blue-ringed octopus
7. Coastal taipan
8. Death Adder
9. Cone Shells
10. Bull Ant
11. Yeah...just about every animal in Australia can kill you. So other human beings is probably the last of my worries.

Propably because you're not one of those suffering from the not so great parts.

Are you speculating? Even though it might seem obvious to you, there are reasons to be skeptical of your claim. For one, I suggest it takes a lot more courage and determination to kill someone with a knife.
