I don’t believe in the overall picture there is a greater nation that the US.

Does that mean it is perfect? No

But it’s the best in the world.

Don’t agree, ok. Which one is better and why.

The USA is the greatest nation.
However I do believe in calling out flaws and the deterioration of it though.
Because no nation is greater than God.
"For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this world's darkness, and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms."

The typical response is always "Well if you don't like it then leave." That is unpatriotic.
Because with out an outside view aside from setting it as an idol above God's law we become no better than the world. You should be comfortable with addressing the issues and solutions to a fallen world. Modern men are aching for violence and rumors of civil war are continually on the rise. Be careful what you wish for.

Define “great” in such a way that we all agree on the definition.

That would depend very much upon how you would define greatness. There is no doubt at all that the USA is a powerful nation, perhaps the most powerful nation, but that does not define greatness. I do think that the USA has approached greatness particularly during and in the years following WW2. Is it the greatest today? I would say no. There are other nations who by a large number of indexes are happier, less violent, more economically secure, more medically secure, etc. Has this presidency made America greater? No, not yet and I don't see any prospect that it will in the near future.

We're the greatest at locking up our own people: we have the highest incarceration rate in the world.

I agree. Even the places around the world which I admire for various reasons, I can do so because American power has enabled that luxury position.. None of those places would I want to be stuck in without America in the picture (and to get back to!).

How many other nations have you been to, OP?

I have only been to one other (Mexico), and unfortunately don't have the money to renew my passport right now, but even then, there are things to admire and things to not admire in every nation. And no nation is great purely by existing, but instead by its ability to care for its citizens and contribute to their good and the good of the world. For sure, the USA does a lot in both of those regards, but is it the 'greatest' at even that? I don't know. I know other countries don't have such broken health care systems as we do, and while they may pay higher taxes as a result, the return on investment is generally a happier and healthier society.

I don't particularly like how the population of the USA doesn't seem to like to get along, particularly around matters of politics, but I guess that's true everywhere but dictatorships with no political choices. I'm glad we're not one of those, but we're not realistically all that much better (Oooo...two choices instead of one!), and yet it seems like with increasing frequency we treat our political allegiances as though they ought to be like visas or passports, determining who ought to be allowed to even be here. That's bad. I would think that greatly shortening the election cycle could fix some of this, since it seems like we never get a break from all of this stuff. In other countries, they do. That in itself doesn't make them better than the USA, but they probably aren't running each other over with cars or starting riots or whatever over their political differences quite as often as we seem to, as of late.

But I quite like our Bill of Rights and constitution. I'm glad that we have them, and don't like see them monkeyed around with. On balance I'm not sure that these in themselves can prove that the USA is great, only that we're very fortunate. And we are, in a lot of ways. But I do always think we could be doing better in some ways. I hope that's not taken as anti-American or whatever. Both my grandfathers fought the Nazis and the Fascists (the real ones, not "people I disagree with") in WWII, and I'm proud of that, and always will be. In the past we've stood up to tyranny and done what's right, together with allies in Europe and the rest of the West (hi, Australia! Thanks for your contribution to basically everything we do, no matter how dumb it might be! We love you...even the bogans...some might argue that we've elected a few of the American version of these :D). I think we can do it again if need be, but I would rather see diplomacy and cooler heads prevail, if we can find some.

That's kinda it, I guess. I would give America a solid B on the A to F grading scale. Quite good, but probably not really living up to full potential. Just sorta coasting on easy mode. Could do better, but will have to put bettering itself ahead of going out partying with its on again off again exes like Russia, China, and Turkey. (We should probably just cut off all ties with Turkey. She looks like she might be the type to tie us up and break our kneecaps, like Kathy Bates' character in the film adaptation of Misery.)

Well, the Australia’s asylum policies—which see asylum-seekers languishing for years under inhumane conditions in offshore detention centers in Papua New Guinea and Nauru. That is definitely not better.

The unemployment rate is almost twice that of the US.

Cost of living is 8% higher. Perth compared to Tulsa

    Personal income tax is higher

    Demography of Australia - Wikipedia

Not exactly a diverse culture, virtually zero African and Latinos at all

Australia does not have explicit freedom of speech in any constitutional or statutory declaration of rights,

    There are no gun rights

But it does have a population 1/13th the size of the US.

You'd have to provide a hard definition of 'great' but at the moment I'd say the defining characteristic of a great nation is promoting the general health, wealth and happiness of its population.

By this measure much of the Western developed world and some Asian states are greater than the US.

Like some earlier posters, I'd argue that a nation with the sort of incarceration rates that the US has precludes it from being great. If you're locking up your own population much more than your neighbors and peers, how can you be greater than them as a nation?

Because with less than 2% of our population they still kick our butts in the only sport that matters.

And there were still women hitchhiking when even the men in the U.S. had stopped doing so because it was too dangerous.

What is "greatest"? The greatest place to live? Nope. Not the U.S.. Whole list of countries ahead of them.

Those same Nazis started out as ‘people who other people disagreed with’ before they evolved into a national party of psychopathic killers who set the world on fire. I can’t help but wonder what your grandfathers (or mine) would have to say to people who try and excuse the latest fascist incarnation as just a group of people exercising their freedom of speech. I think their response would be less than kind.
