People didn't travel or mix with others so they would no more learn another language than read a book, Greek was only spoken where there was a need to speak Greek, fishermen on the banks of Galilee had no need of Greek, Chinese Mandarin is the most widely spoken language on earth, why don't you speak Chinese Manderin?

Because Chinese doesn't have the status of a lingua franca. On the other hand, you can find people all over the world who have English as a second language, and particularly in Britain's former colonies.

I am not a teacher by any means, but some years ago I was tutoring somebody in Norway (via email) who had been given part of an operating system to write, as a university project. Suddenly it hit me that all of the papers he had been sending me were in English! Apparently English is the language used in Norwegian universities.
