• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

EVERYBODY here talks about things that can be evidenced AND things that cannot. So your "lets say..." premise is bunk.
Again, please read my OP.

How do you get educated people, who wouldn't NORMALLY say anything that hasn't been run through the scientific method and back,

This isn't about them.

The ones you ask about dont exist.

Everybody talks about Harry Potter, Santa, Poseidon, etc.

When you bring up the subject of fiction, people will discuss fiction -- even those who WOULDN'T NORMALLY discuss fiction.

How much simpler do you need it to be, AV?

How do you get educated people, who wouldn't normally say anything that hasn't been run through the scientific method and back, to seriously bring up: Santa Claus, the Easter bunny, the tooth (and other) fairies, Allah, the FSM...?

Hint: All you have to do is mention...

...something else that is as equally unsupported by evidence as those other silly things.

Hint: All you have to do is mention _____?

Things that have evidence to support them and things that lack evidence.

Oh, and I am talking about evidence from the real world. I'm sure you will tell me that the real world can take a hike whenever it's convenient for you...

If a person standing next to you mentions that they believe in a God I become slightly frightened,
because you are standing next to someone who is irrational and a person who is irrational is liable to do anything,
given the chance I normally move away.
Hi, consol ...

You may think everything discussed here is, as you say, "nonsense", but can they not all be discussed seriously at some level?

Seriously, in a fight between Batman and Superman, who would win?

If the fight was for real, to the death, batman would die. Kryptonite has to be close to superman to affect him, and he could just kill batman with lazer eyes from a distance.

I agree.

I was going to add that it works the other way around as well.

How do you get a Christian, who walks by faith and not by sight, to suddenly start yakking science?

Tell him the Flood was local.

But I didn't want to derail my own thread.

That's why I call these things "challenges" ... the challenge is to get an accurate and honest answer, without having to wade through a bunch of venting and ridicule.
Is that not the purpose of these threads, for you to vent and ridicule?

Given time to prepare, Batman would have some sort of defence for that.

True, but remember that Superman relies far too much on his strength and invulnerability -- why else did he try to go toe-to-toe with Doomsday?

Batman, OTOH, is a master of psychological manipulation -- it would be far too easy to lure Superman into an up-close-and-personal confrontation (Four words: Lois Lane in peril) and then administer a Kryptonite smackdown.
