As there was no IVF in those days it would be impossible to get pregnant without having sex. I am of the opinion no god was involved Mary got pregnant by having sex with Joseph or another male. The crazy virgin birth story was created to cover up that fact.

On the other hand, unless we say flatly that God cannot do any miracles, there is no reason to deny what the Bible says about this birth. And that would mean that we'd have to also dismiss the Bible's reporting on Jesus healing the deaf, lame, and blind, walking on water, rising from the grave, etc....all of that.

Even if god exists and it was capable of getting a girl pregnant without having sex with her, it would be very wrong indeed to get her pregnant if she was engaged to be married.

    Why so?

For one thing, if there is no god, there are no moral codes that are anything but what society or the government likes at the moment.

For another, no adultery or fornication is involved with this, not even a marriage as we understand the institution. And Mary was told in advance and agreed.

God being both omniscient and omnipresent chose Mary and Joseph and knew their reaction before He incarnated Jesus. They didn’t seem to mind at all, in fact Mary is the most blessed woman who ever lived.

In fact Mary gave her consent even before she was pregnant.

“Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the descendants of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. And coming in, he said to her, "Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you." But she was very perplexed at this statement, and kept pondering what kind of salutation this was. The angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary; for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name Him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end." Mary said to the angel, "How can this be, since I am a virgin?" The angel answered and said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; and for that reason the holy Child shall be called the Son of God. And behold, even your relative Elizabeth has also conceived a son in her old age; and she who was called barren is now in her sixth month. For nothing will be impossible with God." And Mary said, "Behold, the bondslave of the Lord; may it be done to me according to your word." And the angel departed from her.”

None of that is in the slightest bit credible.

So you don’t believe God exists then? Do you always spend so much time attacking fictional characters?

It is what some extreme Christians do and say in the name of this character, which is almost certainly fictional, that I am challenging.

    What's the challenge, then?

So far, we have you rejecting anything and everything that might relate to God...and we got that point right away.

There's not much to discuss or debate when that is what comes back in response to a reply from us that attempts to explain why we believe what we do.

Oh... because in the last few posts it appeared that you were attacking God Himself, not the actions of extremist Christians.

If God is “almost certainty fictional” then your almost certainly not in danger of burning in the lake of fire for all eternity. That’s not going to be very reassuring when the time comes to find out if it’s true or not.

There should be statistics that says which percentage of men and woman are bad persons and don't treat the other gender correctly, what you would say the results would be?.

The bigger worry is that he commissioned, several times, an attack on whole villages, commanding that every man woman and child (living or in utero) to be put to the sword.

Then, if you believe the bible, killed everyone and every animal in a flood (except Noah and a pile of species that he managed to squish onto a boat).

This is the same God who asked a human being to place his son on an altar and put a knife through him. Then at the last minute says...na - just testing you.

When I came to this site it was as a Christian. It was only after I'd been here a while, saw what Christianity was (as espoused by Christian men here) and read the old testament that I thought it to be a big mistake.

. Never argue with atheists...they’re usually right ;). I spent my teens as an atheist because of the toxic way my mother misused religion and because she basically acted like Stephen King’s character, Carrie’s mother . Sexual hysteric describes it well. I didn’t want to emulate that kind of toxic behavior and I was a biology student as well . I also accepted woman’s lib at the time. Hey I wore glasses which we weren’t supposed to do because it made you look smart and I actually had brains which we weren’t supposed to have either.
Women lib had women getting a small mirror and looking at their own labia . Most of us didn’t even know what it looked like unless you had previously babysat a female baby. They thought that if women didn’t think of that area at all that somehow it would keep us innocent. Ignorant is the more accurate word .Most of my generation and previous generations were told that sex was unpleasant and only good for pregnancy and god forbid that you look or touch down there. What a crock!

I never understood that line of reasoning. I mean, in my experience, the Christians who say to atheists, "Why do you attack something you don't even think is real," are also the Christians who tend to loudly attack evolution.

Evolution has much more credibility than much of what the more extreme Christians believe to be true.

I long ago gave up on debating evolution. The debates aren't actually about evolution.

What is wrong with a virginity pledge. It is not misogynistic as both parties make the commitment. Though I don't understand the tradition I cannot see a problem as it is committing to something that seems like a good thing to do in the light of out of marriage sex and all the other problems associated with teen sex.

It seems there is an outrage mentality at almost anything today. Though I don't agree with the extent to which this rapper has gone to ensure his daughter is safe and conforms to his ideas I do support a parent having some control of their children. After all parents are the legal guardians of children and teens under age. There are many examples of how they control their behavior such as stopping them from going to certain places, making them come home by a certain time. Part of this is monitoring their behavior. There are many examples of society controlling teens such as curfews etc. It is only natural that a concerned parent will want to know and sometimes overstep the line in wanting to protect their child.

All these individual rights ideologies can get a little out of hand and control themselves where we allow too many rights to young people who have not earn't them or are not ready for them. This has caused many young people to now defy authority and they play on the fact that no one can tell them what to do anymore by citing their rights. As a result we are now seeing the growth of defiance and a lack of respect for authority.

I would be more concerned if a parent is not monitoring and disciplining their child and allowing them to do things that will lead to problems. I think the basis from where this rapper is coming from is love and it is not about control but love. People just see or hear of someone doing something associated with control and rights and immediately jump on this rights thing and label everyone as a control freak and misogynistic especially if its a male and start bagging men. But this situations seems like an act of love perhaps gone a bot wrong. But perhaps no uncommon in some ways to how a concerned parent may act. How often as a parent have we checked on our children to see if they are not up to no good. Sure trust is important but nowadays its hard to tell.

Nowadays everything is about control, the right to not be controlled. I laugh at this sometimes as those who really think we are free today are deluding themselves. We are more under control than ever. The same politics that supposedly give us our rights on freedoms that people want to push are the same ones that deny us our freedom. There are more intrusions into our private lives than ever asking us to prove ourselves, our health status, age, income, employment, are we a drinker or smoker, what is our financial history, have we ever been in trouble with the law, had a traffic violation, been married, divorced etc etc. You cant do anything today without big brother watching over us. The big difference is this rapper seems to be doing it out of love and I doubt very much that the government or some big corp is doing things because they are concerned about us.

What’s wrong with a virginity pledge? Nothing except it’s not realistic. I remember my oldest ranting about how he was gonna not mastubate and other assorted non sexual sex stuff ...... and then puberty hit . I had a good laugh and told him not to mistreat and deceive girls just for sex.
