It doesn't become obsolete until after Jesus returns to Earth
Based on what you are saying the Old Covenant is still in effect and the New Covenant has not come to fruition yet.
Heb 8:6 But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.
Notice the tense of the verse above, which was written during the first century.

We find the same thing in the verse that you made reference to.
This text is believed to have been written around 66 AD.
The Old did vanish away completely when the temple was destroyed in 70 AD.
When the context of the whole passage is taken into account, the New Covenant was instituted at Calvary, based on the verse below.
Mat 26:28 For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

We are not come to the mountain that burns with fire, but instead to the New Covenant of Mount Zion.
In Galatians chapter 4 Paul compared the Sinai Covenant to "bondage" and compelled the Galatian believers to "cast out" the covenant of "bondage".
The battle between the Judaisers who could not let go of the Sinai Covenant and those who embraced the New Covenant of Christ began in Acts chapter 15.
It is still going on today.
Tremendous confusion and division has been produced in the modern Church, because the Judaisers are still with us.
