Um.
Im just going to laugh that you made this thread.

Wow, really?

I was wrong. You DO have a sense of humour...

Well, sort of.

Pick me up in a classic Impala or a Firebird and I'll do whatever you want.

Sweetie, you really need to choose your words more carefully around here. Strav is frantically composing a ream of sordid and privacy breaching PM's in his gin-sodden hovel right now, as we speak.

He's already slipped into the Batman costume.

Yes. Because its not likely i will go to america anyway. So i can believe all those stereotypical statments because americans dont make the effort to visit nz. I hardly see any round here.

My dad has been to New Zealand to hunt and fish, and I actually used to work with a guy from New Zealand who invited me to visit.

The link I listed shows statistics for countries of origin of visitors to NZ for June of 2016. America is 3rd highest out of 30 countries.

I also wanted to clarify my earlier statements. They give the distinct impression that I am wealthy. I am far from it. Looking at where I was three years ago and now, I am indeed blessed. I don't want to be seen as boastful or shallow. I am deeply thankful to God for all the blessings in my life now.

Coming out of a divorce heavily in debt and going from a two-income household in which we were both in the insurance industry to starting on the bottom in a manufacturing company and living in my brother's guest bedroom was a very humbling experience.

Two years ago, I was upside down on a 3yr old sedan, behind on payments, and had to borrow money from my children just to afford insurance and food making $10 an hour.

I now have a good job in corporate security at nearly twice the income, bought a humble little house in a small quiet town, drive a paid for year old pickup, and finally have enough money left over to enjoy some hobbies.

To the executives in my company, I am poor. To me I am rich. I haven't had money left over after bills and expenses for over 3 years now and I am deeply grateful to the Lord for his blessings.

I started the thread in jest, as I am aware of middle-aged men going out and buying a flashy car or Harley-Davidson motorcycle to feel young again and to attract younger women. It was just a way to poke fun at myself for being a middle-aged man who is buying a motorcycle. Though certainly not to feel younger or attract women, but to have fun by going out and exploring this part of the country.

Crickets start chirping because all the women have run away.

I am happy to hear you are on your way back to recovery and that your hard work is paying off.

Good luck on getting a bike and may God guide you in your decision.

Have you looked at Triumph, I started out on a 68 Triumph back in 86, I have always liked them.

Triumphs are amazing bikes, but above my price range. I refuse to buy used bikes since I've had so many bad experiences with them.

Trying to stay under $8k which is why it came down to the Versys or the KLR...

I also really like the inline 4 cylinder that the Jap makers produce, its a great motor and turned the motorcycle world around when they came out. After my 68 Triumph I bought myself a 1975 Honda 550 4 cylinder and it was a great bike. It did 70 all day long and the speed limit was only 55 back then and it was comfortable. I bought it because it had the British profile but it had the Japanese reliability. I personally have no problem with used bikes because there is so little there but I do understand your concern, if your laying out the bucks you want it perfect.

My current bike is a 1978 Harley Davidson 74 ci FXE that I love but I am so tired of the biker scene right now I don't even want to ride anymore. Half are trying to play outlaw and steal my bike and the other half are actual outlaws who want to steal my bike, cant they find something newer to steal.
everybody wants a shovelhead Harley Davidson. I bought it because it ran perfect and was cheap so once again I had cheap reliable transportation but the world is so messed up right now that I can not enjoy it properly at this time.

One of my biggest worries is that by the time I have the money to afford it, the model I want to eventually get for long-distance/highway riding (Honda NM4) will no longer be made and the only way I'll be able to find it is used - if I'm able to find one at all; the things are fairly rare as it is. Even though that means I wouldn't have to spend as much on it, but still.

I love the Honda NM4! If I was getting a bike for simply commuting and street touring, then that would be the bike...

In my case, I don't need one for commuting since I have the scooter. But seeing as how you can't take a 50cc on the Interstate, I'll need something bigger if I ever need to commute across the bay or really anything more than ~20 miles away.

If I can't find the NM4, then I can settle for either the BMW C650 GT or the Honda DN-01 (one of which I did see up-close and sat on at a dealer a couple months ago). The DN-01 I know I can only get used, since it was only available during the 2009 model year. I just don't know whether the BMW is seated low enough to flat foot or if I'd have to treat it like my current scooter and lean over to one side when coming to a stop. The DN-01 (and presumably the NM4, given the similarities in styling) was low enough for me to easily plant both feet firmly on the ground.

Are you suggesting that a car with a bed is the best of both world? Not for me. What I value about the truck most is how high you sit above the road...my minivan had a truck base for this very reason. My dad had an el camino for a while but even as a little girl, I prefered his Chevy work truck...so it must be inherent in me. ;)

I wish we had those in America! Haven't had the El Camino here since 1987, I believe... Is that a Holden in the picture?

Looks like it. I've seen a lot of it in AU and NZ, mostly in V8 flavors.

But I don't get the point. Just for the sake of having a fast pickup maybe. But those things have no offroad capability.

So don't expect to use it in farm duties or carry dirt bikes all the way to the trail. Most I've seen driving it never put anything higher the sides.
