Just checking. I'm on it for medical reasons for now, and I very quickly discovered that recipes are needed, especially since my digestion further limits ingredients (veggies are limited for me too, but I'm trying to further explore what I can eat).

I'm not checking any other threads here, as sometimes I miss sugar, bread, rice, potatoes! And right now I'm keeping very strict, under 15 grams of carbs per day.

ETA - just as a point of clarity - I'm supposed to be strict, but I'm supposed to be at 20 grams a day. I'm just falling short on every category, including calories and carbs, so the end result is that I actually eat 15grams a day, not thatvim supposed to. Just for honesty's sake.

Is there any realistic way of keeping Orthodox fasting rules while limiting carbs?

No, unfortunately it's impossible.

I already spoke to my SF. He has given me his blessing to stay on the keto diet (for medical reasons it's always excused).

But no. It's completely impossible afaik to get the required levels and balance of fats and proteins without animal products - unless one consumed an impossible amount of vegetable products, and then the carbs would be so high it would not be ketogenic - it would just be overeating. A LOT.

He suggested I take smaller portions but even that isn't possible. I'm supposed to eat a certain number of calories a day, and the best I've done so far is to get 20-50 short. Yesterday was a bad day, I only got about 350 calories, and my muscles ache as a result. It's very hard to get the benefits of fasting when I mostly don't WANT to eat, lol.

But I know with foods prepared right according to the diet, it's much easier. I'm just working on learning how to do that. :)

Thank you. I don’t have good suggestions for you, but hope you get some useful responses here.

(I was not questioning your practices, by the way...just wondering if I could do the upcoming Lenten fasting and somehow still manage a low carb diet as well...I’ve put on quite a few pounds since Christmas, and would love to lose them and limiting carbs works best for me.)

Dang. 15 grams of carbs a day? How long have you been on that? That's drastically low.

I've done high protein low carb for training, but that's keeping it under 100 carbs a day. For keto the limit is usually 30 grams.

I didn't take it as you questioning me. :) I just usually include the relevant protocol for any lurkers or whoever. I hope I didn't sound defensive.

I should have read your question better. You can probably limit carbs somewhat - certainly you can at least pay attention to the KIND of carbs you eat, which will probably help. Lentils for example have protein and are slowly digested, while donuts (technically allowed) of course don't do you any favors. But if you stick to whole grain when you have pasta, that will help slightly. Even better, spaghetti squash (but I find it gets pricey by comparison!). The problem with the fasts is sometimes folks replace the animal products with too many refined carbs. I'm no expert in this, but there ARE definitely ways to do this much better. It just won't be ketogenic. You might look into slow-carb, or some aspects of paleo without the meat? Again, I'm an expert on neither, but I have run across them. I think there are aspects in there that can help you. :)

Not long so far - less than two weeks. I'm supposed to be aiming for 20 grams a day, but I fall short in everything. I'm looking for recipes, things I can eat, to boost everything cuz I don't get hungry really. Yesterday was bad actually - I had errands to run and I took a little food with me, but I ended up with only 5 carbs yesterday. I'm not supposed to do that.

Later on (probably soon if things continue to improve) I will go to 30 grams a day. Still later maybe 50. That might be maintenance though. Too early to tell. But I have to limit protein too, to keep inflammation down and keep the balance where they want it, so I'm around 20% of the calories from protein. That I can manage, usually I have to work to keep it from going too high.

This is all pretty new to me.

It's primarily for inflammation, with supplements, and has been working for that (so far). Weight loss as a side benefit. (You'd think I could at least be slender if my problem is that I don't ever want to eat, lol).

But I'm very much trying to learn this stuff.

There's groups on Reddit, Facebook, where you can exchange recipes & whatnot with other folks following Keto. That might help you get more ideas on what to eat, snacks to carry & such. Lots of grocery stores, even convenience stores are selling snack packs that are pretty low carb, slices of meat & cheese. I love beef jerky as a snack you can keep in your car. Just be sure to keep some hand sanitizer in your car too so your hands don't smell like the flavor of your jerky the rest of the day, lol.

I'd definitely recommend trying to get up a minimum of 30 carbs a day. Not to be up in your business, but with that few carbs a day you're going to probably deal with some awful constipation & other pretty unpleasant side effects.

Thanks for the suggestions. Yeah, meat and cheese on the go would be perfect in a pinch. I think jerky may work as well. Having it in the car would be perfect. (If it's really PERFECTLY dry ... it gets hot and humid here soon so normally no food can be in the car). I'll look into that, and the groups. Thanks!

Salmon, other fish, helps some with inflammation. Good luck to you.
Thanks for that too!

And I've got some side effects, not sure what to put down to what. Muscle aches when I fall far short on eating, and difficulty thermoregulating (my thyroid is messed up too though).

It's a steep learning curve. Fish would at least be a little more appropriate for our fast too.

More important than keto is clean eating. You have to understand what food is and where it comes from. The majority of farms today are run by a few companies. The underlying premise of Keto is not biblical (it supports evolution).

Eating real whole organic locally sourced foods with short fasts is much better than Keto. People often say the wheat today is not the same wheat 1000 years ago. So what? Everything has been selectively breed to be better.

The majority of civilization has survived on primarily carbs for thousands of years without any issues. It's only in "modern agriculture" has it become an issue. Nobody reads ingredient list anymore...they only care about the calories and macros. The bible states for farmers to not farm the field in the 7th year so that it rots and "refreshes" the soil with nutrients.

I eat keto and have some good resources/info links if your still looking for help.
I previously was eating paleo/primal so going keto 4 months ago wasent a huge change for me (mostly just lower carbs and higher fat) but I dropped about 35lbs when I did so without trying. I dont calorie restrict and I do Fasting and IF as I feel like it (basicly only eat if Im hungry)

Hi there!

I'm still on it, and doing so well I'm not sure I will ever get off. I wouldn't want to lose the other health benefits even after I don't need to lose weight anymore (though I think I might have to eat quite a lot to keep from losing!).

Resources are always appreciated though. I have been Keto for six months now. I just recently discovered a "corn muffin" recipe I like (almond flour, cheeses, eggs) and that's my first good bread replacement. I tend to find a recipe I like and stick with it. I really should experiment more. But having things people have already tried with success would be invaluable.

I've wondered though if I can go paleo or slow carb or something someday. I wonder if I would keep the anti-inflammatory benefits of Keto. I love that the pain has stopped, my joints are much better, I've lost about 60% of what I wanted to get to an ideal weight - and even my skin tone is becoming even and clear. I think I can live forever without bread, pasta, and sugar. But sometimes I'd like a little potato and more fruit, maybe even a drop of honey.

Sure, though, I'd appreciate any resources at all. :) Thanks!

Ah I see I never answered. My apologies.

Like I said, I got on this for medical reasons. I have a condition that is almost untreatable in the US. The Japanese are having some success with a new medication (not available in the US and I prefer to avoid meds when possible) and the Keto diet seemed workable to me and to duplicate those effects. I had been in pain every day for 8 months when I started Keto. It stopped after less than a week on Keto and hasn't come back.

I agree with you on clean eating. I was already trying to do that. In fact, for several years I had a little farm and grew most of my own and used very sustainable methods to work it. But even so, I got cancer at that time. (It's gone now thank God.)

So I'm doing the best I can, and thankful that for now this is working for me. :)

That's so good to see another person discovering the life changing benefits keto can bring. Congratulations on your success!
Thanks! I'm very happy.

I'm also kind of amazed. I got on this for medical reasons, and it has worked. And numerous other little complaints have resolved at the same time. I'm very thankful. But the surprise to me is that I've tried "diets" over the years for weight loss. Nothing really worked. (Except extreme stress one time and that wasn't planned - besides now stress makes me gain/retain weight.) But I've lost well on Keto, eating sometimes 3x or more calories and much more fat. The diet books were wrong.

But yes I'm very happy. Besides, I find this very easy to stick to. I've never "cheated" except for one day - we celebrate the Resurrection with a huge community feast - and I planned in advance that I would eat with everyone that one day. So it wasn't really a cheat. I got a headache and 5 pounds water weight that went away after a few days. But I'm not even seriously tempted by everyone eating bread-crusted pizza and candy around me. :)
