  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

You want to try that one again? That is not what she said.

MITCHELL: OK.

Do you recall prior to getting there — so I’m — I’m only talking about up to the gathering — had you had anything to drink?

FORD: Not at all.

Speaking from experience, I understand where Kavanaugh is coming from as I and my friends also drank heavily as teenagers. But I don't recall anyone getting so drunk that they passed out, although I felt the need to repair to the back seat of my car after one party, where I instantly fell asleep. However I can still recall the events of that party to this day.

The drinking age for beer in my state was 18 at the time, 21 for liquor. As we mostly drank beer kids would get puking sick but not pass out. It was only on those occasions that someone brought hard liquor that some would get 'crazy' drunk, but were in no condition to sexually assault anyone. Interestingly the few girls that partied with us, usually girlfriends, rarely got drunk, and usually left our parties early.

I get that. And individuals also react differently while drunk.

My issue is Kavanaugh is not being honest about the possibility of doing something he may not remember.

If someone accused you on national television of orchestrating multiple gang rapes, how would you feel?
Hopefully with more maturity than the petulant, privileged man-child we witnessed yesterday.

They cannot investigate the allegations until asked to. Trump has sat on his thumb & spun around telling fibs about it. If Kavanaugh's innocent, if he's got nothing to hide, the very best way that Trump could stick it to everybody against the nomination is to have the FBI investigate & prove that. The three accusers who've come public so far have all pushed for it. Seems like Kavanaugh would want to clear his name.
He's asked repeatedly if he wants an FBI investigation, he rambles in response. Something about 301 files, never really gives a straight answer, its obvious Republicans want to move quickly to a vote. Both testimonies were emotional and believable, Kavanaugh had me convinced. Then they had that episode, I just can't imagine why he would act like that.

While I'm a Democrat I happen to like strict constructionalists. I think Trump blee a golden opportunity here opting for a political hack that will tow the party line like no other Supreme Court ever has. Even at that, I had no problem till he dodged that question like a run away truck. Lost a lot of respect for Linsay Graham as well.

The game was political 'dodge ball', and Kavanaugh won the point. Admitting any human weakness is all the Dems would need to build a hypothetical case where they can lead the public to believe Kavanaugh was capable of burning down an orphanage.

Reminds me of a humorous comedy bit,

Reporter's question to candidate: "Are you homosexual"?

Candidate: "Absolutely not!"

Headline in next paper: "Candidate denies that he is homosexual."

Since the Senate Committee Chairman does not have a backbone, I wish the judge had opened his testimony with "I call on the Committee to request the POTUS to re-open the background check to clear my name."

The GOP committee members are dancing around this issue as we speak. Simply put, they don't have a good reason for not involving the FBI. At most, the investigation would last one week. There is more than enough time to conduct that investigation and have a Senate vote prior to the election.

Yeah, we don't want our Supreme Court justices throwing wild beer parties and sexually assaulting women, now do we? ^_^
Of course not.

Just as a bit of a sidebar to this thread: If we accept that this is a "he said, she said" situation:

Do you REALLY expect a rapist/assaulter, in front of the ENTIRE nation, after years of services where he did NOT participate in those activities, to ADMIT that he did those things?

Because that is a patently absurd notion.

Obviously thats not going to happen, any chance of transparency is lost. The Supreme Court will have a politicized GOP majotity, as soon as they can get a vote with the full Senate.

She said she had one drink. Maybe she has a weak stomach and got drunk. Factually hes already innocent. Her friends who were at the party said he wasn't there. Factually his calender shows he wasn't there. Factually she can remember the assault like it was yesterday but seems to have no memory of how she got there, how she got home, what day, month and year it happened. Seems like she either mad it all up or she was drunk, which would show her memory is faulty because anyone could of assaulted her though. She just targeted Kav because of his position.

He did get a little whiney at times. :tantrum:
I would too if someone made a false accusation of sexual assault. Then which lead to death threats...etc. If just making al allegation against someone automatically makes them guilty then its a scary world. Heck when I was in my teens I went to my friends house once and stood next to his steps with my arms laying on the top stair because I was bored waiting for him. His little sister (maybe around 8) came out and sat down on the stairs and her butt rubbed against my arm. She screamed and ran inside.

Her mom came out and told me never to come back because she said I touched her "private area". I was like "Whaaaa?!?!?". This is why people have to be worried about crazed people who make sexual allegations. Despite me being there and knowing what happened, people would automatically believe her because shes a woman making a claim. And of course its just he said/she said thing.

His roommate from Yale & classmates from then have described him as being belligerent, lacking control. I thought well, maybe that was just back in his youth. Then he goes on & what does he do, immediately becomes belligerent, lacks self control.

These have got a point, lol:

This is on par with how many assault victim’s recollections. Having vivid details of the assault burned into memory but surrounding details fuzzy or completely lost.

I was assaulted at 14, over 30 years ago. I can recall who did it and who else was there. The specifics of what happened to me. I can’t remember day or month. I could sketch the interior of the apartment. I could not tell you the neighborhood or city.

It was a family member I was visiting and I was not in a familiar city so that will account for the last part.

The point is that it is not uncommon to remember details of a violent act,and details immediately before or after, yet still lose memory of more extraneous details.

Seems like "seems liking" her testimony without knowing about how victims of assault process their thoughts and trauma may not lead to a considered outcome.

I can't imagine a less pertinent example; comparing a false allegation of violent adult sexual congress with this scenario with a 30 second discussion with a mother to straighten out what happenned.

If your aunt was raped, why would you believe her?

Okay.

Do you think it's plausible that he had a clear memory of events while he was drinking?
Isn't it possible to drink and still remember things pretty well? Do you have to black out while drinking? Do you suddenly turn into a rapist because you had too much to drink? Wouldn't it be possible to have too much to drink, but still remember stuff well enough?

Answering any of those 'gotcha' questions would lead to entrapment in a hypothetical narrative that would be sold as a real event. I'm hundreds of miles away and I could spot that.
