Brothers and Sisters, those with Joshua who "first heard" the "good news" of how to enter the Sabbath and were not allowed to enter by oath for 40 years in the desert near the Promised Land, did not enter the "day" of rest during those 40 years, which Joshua later entered at an earlier time than the Seventh day in the Promised Land, but Joshua wrongly assumed this earlier time was the seventh day. In the following passage, another "day" refers to a different day than the one thought for the Sabbath since Joshua: not the seventh day of the week everywhere, but the seventh day of the first week of creation remembered in that time zone that falls in the Promised Land before the seventh day of the week. Judaism is wrong to think, since Joshua, that a day of the week is from evening to evening, as the sabbath falls in the Promised Land, when a day of the week is from morning to morning, as shown with Manna in the desert not allowing them to enter the Sabbath by keeping the seventh day for 40 years in the desert near the Promised Land.

So God’s rest is there for people to enter, but those who first heard this good news failed to enter because they disobeyed God. So God set another time for entering his rest, and that time is today. God announced this through David much later in the words already quoted: “Today when you hear his voice, don’t harden your hearts.” Now if Joshua had succeeded in giving them this rest, God would not have spoken about another day of rest still to come. So there is a special rest still waiting for the people of God. For all who have entered into God’s rest have rested from their labors, just as God did after creating the world. So let us do our best to enter that rest. But if we disobey God, as the people of Israel did, we will fall. (Hebrews 4:6-11 NLT)

Sabbath Rest (ligonier.org)

The anyonymous author of Hebrews found different ways of describing the superiority of the Lord Jesus Christ. One of them, which forms the underlying motif of chapters 3 and 4, is that Jesus Christ gives the rest that neither Moses nor Joshua could provide. Under Moses, the people of God were disobedient and failed to enter into God’s rest (Heb. 3:18). Psalm 95:11 (quoted in Hebrews 4:3) implies that Joshua could not have given the people “real rest” since “through David” God speaks about the rest he will give on another day (Heb. 4:7). This in turn implies that “There remains a sabbath rest for the people of God” (Heb. 4:9).

In speaking of this rest (Heb. 3:18; 4:1, 3-6, 8) the author consistently used the same word for “rest” (katapausis). Suddenly, in speaking about the “rest” that remains for the people of God, he uses a different word (sabbatismos, used only here in the NT) meaning specifically a Sabbath rest. In the context of his teaching, this refers fundamentally to the “Sabbath rest” which is found in Christ (“Come . . . I will give you rest,” Matt. 11:28-30). Thus we are to “strive to enter that rest” (Heb. 4:11).

Since Augustine, Christians have recognized that the Bible describes human experience in a fourfold scheme: in creation, fall, redemption, and glory. We are familiar with echoes of this in the Westminster Confession of Faith (chapter 9) and in Thomas Boston’s great book Human Nature in its Fourfold State. It is no surprise then that the Sabbath, which was made for man, is experienced by him in four ways.

In creation, man was made as God's image—intended “naturally” as God’s child to reflect his Father. Since his Father worked creatively for six days and rested on the seventh, Adam, like a son, was to copy Him. Together, on the seventh day, they were to walk in the garden. That day was a time to listen to all the Father had to show and tell about the wonders of His creating work.

Thus the Sabbath Day was meant to be “Father’s Day” every week. It was “made” for Adam. It also had a hint of the future in it. The Father had finished His work, but Adam had not.

But Adam fell. He ruined everything, including the Sabbath. Instead of walking with God, he hid from God (Gen. 3:8). It was the Sabbath, Father’s Day, but God had to look for him!

This new context helps us to understand the significance of the fourth commandment. It was given to fallen man—that is why it contains a “you shall not.” He was not to work, but to rest. Externally, that meant ceasing from his ordinary tasks in order to meet with God. Internally, it involved ceasing from all self-sufficiency in order to rest in God’s grace.

Considering this, what difference did the coming of Jesus make to the Sabbath day? In Christ crucified and risen, we find eternal rest (Matt. 11:28-30), and we are restored to communion with God (Matt. 11:25-30). The lost treasures of the Sabbath are restored. We rest in Christ from our labor of self-sufficiency, and we have access to the Father (Eph. 2:18). As we meet with Him, He shows us Himself, His ways, His world, His purposes, His glory. And whatever was temporary about the Mosaic Sabbath must be left behind as the reality of the intimate communion of the Adamic Sabbath is again experienced in our worship of the risen Savior on the first day of the week— the Lord’s Day.

But we have not yet reached the goal. We still struggle to rest from our labors; we still must “strive to enter that rest” (Heb. 4:11). Consequently the weekly nature of the Sabbath continues as a reminder that we are not yet home with the Father. And since this rest is ours only through union with Christ in His death and resurrection, our struggles to refuse the old life and enjoy the new continue.

But one may ask: “How does this impact my Sundays as a Christian?” This view of the Sabbath should help us regulate our weeks. Sunday is “Father’s Day,” and we have an appointment to meet Him. The child who asks “How short can the meeting be?” has a dysfunctional relationship problem—not an intellectual, theological problem—something is amiss in his fellowship with God.

This view of the Sabbath helps us deal with the question “Is it ok to do . . . on Sunday?—because I don’t have any time to do it in the rest of the week?” If this is our question, the problem is not how we use Sunday, it is how we are misusing the rest of the week.

This view of the Lord’s Day helps us see the day as a foretaste of heaven. And it teaches us that if the worship, fellowship, ministry, and outreach of our churches do not give expression to that then something is seriously amiss.

Hebrews teaches us that eternal glory is a Sabbath rest. Every day, all day, will be “Father’s Day!’ Thus if here and now we learn the pleasures of a God-given weekly rhythm, it will no longer seem strange to us that the eternal glory can be described as a prolonged Sabbath!

Read Hebrews chapter 11, which is the "faith" chapter, if you do not believe the OT Saints never heard the "Good News" of the Gospel. What did Paul say below? Gal_3:8 And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed.
Brother, the "gospel" is not a "day"! The "good news", which was "first heard" in the desert about how to enter the "day" of rest that they failed to enter for 40 years as punishment by "oath", is not the gospel of believing in Jesus' new covenant ministry as our High Priest before David. The "good news" they heard in the desert is how to enter the Sabbath and how not to enter the Sabbath, shown when God punishes them for their disobedience in the desert preventing them from entering the Sabbath. God prevented Joshua from entering the Sabbath by having him keep the seventh day from morning-to-morning for 40 years near the Promised Land with Manna before Joshua was allowed to enter the "day" of rest at an earlier time from evening-to-evening than the seventh day in the Promised Land. Joshua wrongly assumed that this earlier time was the seventh day of the week when God had shown him for 40 years that the seventh day is from morning-to-morning and not the earlier time from evening-to-evening.

Brother, the rest of the "soul" experienced through Jesus' ministry as our High Priest compared to animal sacrifices was not available before David to those who died in the desert. The rest of the "soul" after Jesus is a different rest than the "day" of rest from before Jesus that was known to Joshua and which needs correction from human tradition since Joshua, for Christians who live outside the Promised Land.

Heb 4:1 Therefore, since a promise remains of entering His rest, let us fear lest any of you seem to have come short of it.
Heb 4:2 For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it.
Heb 4:3 For we who have believed do enter that rest, as He has said: "SO I SWORE IN MY WRATH, 'THEY SHALL NOT ENTER MY REST,' " although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.

Brother, the clarifying question is: who is "them" in saying "was preached to us as well as to them"? Your point of view is that "them" refers to descendants of those that died in the desert, but the word of God says "them" refers to those "whose corpses lay in the wilderness", who made God angry for "forty years" and who God punished by "oath" for 40 years and not their descendants like Joshua who was not punished beyond the 40 years having entered the "day" of rest in the Promised Land that he was prevented from entering by "oath" during the 40 years in the desert with Manna.

And who was it who rebelled against God, even though they heard his voice? Wasn’t it the people Moses led out of Egypt? And who made God angry for forty years? Wasn’t it the people who sinned, whose corpses lay in the wilderness? And to whom was God speaking when he took an oath that they would never enter his rest? Wasn’t it the people who disobeyed him? So we see that because of their unbelief they were not able to enter his rest. (Hebrews 3:16-19 NLT)

Hebrews 4:9 "There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God." (sabbatismos the repose of Christianity, rest)

Hebrews 4:10 "For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from His.

Hebrews 4:11 "Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, least any man fall after the same example of unbelief."

Today, that's where we put our rest in- Christ. Not a day of the week. We should have our rest in Christ 24/7.

When it speaks of another day, it's talking about the day that we are able to put that rest in Christ, not a day of the week. That's the day that was promised. We are to enter into "his rest".

To put our rest today in a day of the week would be going backwards, not forwards.

Sister, it is not possible, because those "whose corpses lay in the wilderness" did not live to see the coming of Jesus to have been able to enter into any other rest than the "day" of rest, known to them as the Sabbath. The "day" of rest that they were prevented from entering as punishment for 40 years in the desert with Manna near the Promised Land that Joshua later entered, having arrived on the Promised Land at a time before the seventh day in the Promised Land, when Joshua had been prevented from entering the Sabbath during the 40 years with Manna by God having them keep the wrong Sabbath near the Promised Land as punishment by "oath" for 40 years.

Is Christ our Sabbath Rest?
Brother, the Promised Land does not fit the context of another "day". The foundation of this human tower of speculation in the video is that God's rest "day" was the Promised Land, when the rest "day" is not the Promised Land, as the context tells us in the following paragraph, where even after being in the Promised Land, the message says that Joshua did not give them this rest "day" that God offered them again through David much later. This clearly shows that God's rest "day" is not the Promised Land or He would not have spoken about another "day" of rest after David. The Promised Land does not fit the context of another "day". The only appropriate fit for the context of the message is a Sabbath different from that of the human tradition of Judaism, giving us another "day" than what is understood for the Sabbath since Joshua.

So God’s rest (day) is there for people to enter, but those who first heard this good news (how to enter the "day" of rest) failed to enter because they disobeyed God. So God set another time for entering his rest (day), and that time is today (don't harden your heart). Wow! All this discussion and only one vote in the poll. I found the poll flawed in that it did not allow me to cast my vote, but it limited the choices to two days and a corrected sabbath. The writer to the Hebrews is explicit about the heavenly Sabbath rest provided by Jesus Christ - forever. In heaven we rest with God from our works.

Brother, the rest of the "soul" is not the "day" of rest. The rest of the "soul" after Jesus, with the faster cycle of forgiveness from Jesus as our High Priest compared to before Jesus with the slower animal sacrifices, is different than the "day" of rest. The fact that the same word is used in different contexts does not mean that the word refers to the same thing, just as it is not true that when the word brother is used we are always talking about the same brother and never about another brother. The rest of the "soul", with the faster cycle of forgiveness from Jesus as our High Priest, is different than the "day" of rest, known to Judaism as the Sabbath. The message of Hebrews is about the "day" of rest and not about any other rest that is not a "day".

So God’s rest (day) is there for people to enter, but those who first heard this good news (how to enter the "day" of rest) failed to enter because they disobeyed God.

Has Judaism been celebrating the Passover on the wrong day as well? United in searching the Scriptures.
Brother, no! Passover is properly celebrated from morning to morning in contradiction to their tradition of a day being from evening to evening, because the Passover meat is eaten at night and killed during the day, making it impossible to comply with eating it on the same day it is killed, according to their human tradition of the day. However, since the day is from morning to morning, they can eat it the same day that they kill it, because the day comes before the night and not the other way around, as it is with their wrong human tradition of a Sabbath in the Promised Land being the seventh day of the week. The following passage is from a rabbi trying to understand it.

A Long Day

Also note that, in a certain sense, the celebration of the 15th is considered to be an extension of the 14th. How so? With regard to sacrifices, the verse states, “And the flesh of his thanksgiving peace offering shall be eaten on the day it is offered up; he shall not leave any of it over until morning.” In other words, if you were given one day to eat an offering, the day consisted of the daytime followed by its night (unlike all other purposes, for which Jewish calendar days consist of the night followed by the day). Thus, as far as sacrifices are concerned, the night after a sacrifice is brought is an extension of the day it is brought.

Therefore, when it comes to the celebration of the Passover sacrifice, while it was eaten on the 15th, it was considered to be the same day as the 14th. (Rabbi Yehuda Shurpin)

Brother, when did Jesus eat it? I think it's great that you like looking into these things.

Brother, Jesus can not eat the Passover before He is killed as our Passover. The word of God tells us next: Jesus is our "Passover" lamb. The High Sabbath after His death guarantees that it was the first Passover and not the second chance a month later, with no High Sabbath afterwards.

Christ, our Passover Lamb, has been sacrificed for us. So let us celebrate the festival, not with the old bread of wickedness and evil, but with the new bread of sincerity and truth. (1 Corinthians 5:7b-8 NLT)

Since Jesus is at night eating the Passover, which was killed before the night during the day, the only conclusion I can see is that a year passed between the capture of Jesus after eating the Passover and His death as our Passover lamb before it can be eaten. It is clear that Jesus was captured that same night after eating the Passover with the Disciples.

Peter asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” Then Jesus answered, “Will you really lay down your life for me? Very truly I tell you, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times! (John 13:37-38 NLT)

Judas went out at night before everyone else. This gives us a precise break that must have passed in John's narrative of at least one year. After the rooster in verse 27 and before Pilate in verse 28 below.

Again Peter denied it, and at that moment a rooster began to crow.
(... a year must have passed between the previous event and the next event ...)
Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor. By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness they did not enter the palace, because they wanted to be able to eat the Passover. (John 18:27-28 NLT)

The only appropriate fit for the context of the message is a Sabbath different from that of the human tradition of Judaism,

And Paul explained who is that rest in the passage below.

Col 2:16 Let no one, then, judge you in eating or in drinking, or in respect of a feast, or of a new moon, or of sabbaths,
Col 2:17 which are a shadow of the coming things, and the body is of the Christ;

The day was the "shadow" of our rest.

Christ's work at Calvary is the "body" of that rest. I rest in what He has done for me.

We are not come to Mount Sinai in Hebrews 12:18. We are come instead to the New Covenant church of Mount Zion and the blood in Hebrews 12:22-24.

Brother, Jesus is in jail for a year? United in searching the scriptures!
Brother, it changes my view of the following passage. Did Jesus anticipate extreme physical or mental suffering from jail?

He walked away, about a stone’s throw, and knelt down and prayed, “Father, if you are willing, please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.” Then an angel from heaven appeared and strengthened him. He prayed more fervently, and he was in such agony of spirit that his sweat fell to the ground like great drops of blood. (Luke 22:41-44 NLT)

Brother, read on and you will see that Paul is talking about human rules and not God's rules.

You have died with Christ, and he has set you free from the spiritual powers of this world. So why do you keep on following the rules of the world, such as, “Don’t handle! Don’t taste! Don’t touch!”? Such rules are mere human teachings about things that deteriorate as we use them. These rules may seem wise because they require strong devotion, pious self-denial, and severe bodily discipline. But they provide no help in conquering a person’s evil desires. (Colossians 2:20-23 NLT)

Brother, most people take that to mean he was anticipating the extreme agony and mental suffering on the cross.

Back to the Sabbath, when the observance is changed from morning to morning to evening to evening, is it moved forward 12 hours, or backward 12 hours?

United in saying Even so, come, Lord Jesus.
