Is it possible or not to keep the 10 commandments?
If it's not possible to keep the commandments, why do Jesus and also Paul say we are to keep the commandments?
John 14:15
"If you love Me, you will keep My commandments."
John 14:21
He who has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me; and he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and will disclose Myself to him.”
John 15:10
If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love; just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.
Matthew 5:19
Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 19:17
And He said to him, “Why are you asking Me about what is good? There is only One who is good; but if you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.”
1 Corinthians 7:19
Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, but what matters is the keeping of the commandments of God.
1 Timothy 6
13 I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who testified the good confession before Pontius Pilate, 14 that you keep the commandment without stain or reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ,
The ETERNAL laws of God are to "Love God with all your mind, heart and strength, and Love your neighbor as yourself." Period.
Based on these ETERNAL laws the
first covenant was made with Israel -
The Ten Commandments. Exodus 34:28.
But then comes Jesus...Who is our Sabbath Rest. Whereby we keep Jesus and not merely a day.
He said:
John 15:10
If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love; just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.
The commandments of Jesus are all based on the heart, and not just willpower.
The
New Covenant Commandments are also based on the ETERNAL laws of God. And see how Jesus encompasses the first four of the Ten Commandments.
1 John 3:23
"23
And this is His commandment: that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as He gave us commandment.
The only way to keep these laws of the heart is by the baptism of the Holy Spirit. The "grace" of God is the
power of God abiding in us to keep Gods eternal laws through us.
The Ten Commandments, except for coveting, were all "bottom-line" commandments such as against murder, although you could still hate and not commit the sin. In other words, you could still have iniquity in your heart but remain "not guilty" of sin. Jesus came to remove the iniquity buried deep within us, before it ever rose to the top to commit sin! "To whom the Son makes free, is free indeed."
Here is an example. Look how far it is before a mere temptation becomes sin. James 1:14-15 "14 But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. 15 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to
sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death."
