• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Tad,
I also want to thank you for "shedding light" on AS. I have a 10 yr. old son that the pro's are saying he "only has Aspie like tendencies, but from what I have researched, he fits almost every criteria. it has been a struggle for us and him, trying to understand him and all that goes with it. He to was DX as ADHD, Bi-Polar,Reactive Attatchment, Obbssessive Compulsive and the like. However, he doesn't meet as many as the criteria as he does for Aspie's. I can only hope that with education and patience we can guide him in the way that he woul;d be most successful!
God Bless,
Roxanne

:amen: Tad,
What knid of testing /evaluations did you go thru in order to be DX? I have found a Dr. that specializes in AS, but because of my son's insurance it would cost us out of pocket $350. I know that if we did get a definite answer that he has AS it wouldn't change who he is, but I almost need that assurance so that I can move forward in helping him succeed. Thanks for your encouragement!
In Christ,
Roxanne

Ha, Maybe Asperger's Syndrome would build up you to be an excellent writer and encourager. Appreciate for Lord.

Love, Yusuph:wave:

Certainly did for me! I'm a published author and an ordained minister. I've finally discovered with my diagnosis why I'm not much of a pastor (but I try), it's AS- and thus I guess I'm more of a teacher. I think AS makes it harder to have empathy for others, but God can use us for other gifted ministries too.

Well...I needed that reassurance and my insurance didn't cover it either...and we have no specialists nearby....I had to travel 1.5 hours to met the Doc halfway and it cost me over $600. I took several tests including an IQ and some sort of neuropsych tests...not sure which ones...it took me about 3 or so hours...and a month of waiting for the results...I also wrote up several things to help with the my past history and my mom and ex filled out some forms too.

But it was worth it to me to find out that I wasn't stupid or crazy...like I was being told. I would say if you can find a way to afford it...go for it...but be cautious with who you share the Dx with...some people take a Dx like that and don't look beyond the label...for others they need the label to see the person...heck if I can tell the difference...but I don't interact with too many people IRL anymore...too much damage done from the last abusive situation...but I am working on it. Someday i hope for it to be different for me.

Actually I think I am over empathetic...just can't seem to express it in a manner that other people seem to understand.

Wow, I am impressed with the fact that you say you are blessed with having Asperger's. I'm 23 and I have been diagnosed with Asperger's as well. Sometimes I wish I didn't have it but then I would probably not be who I am today. I consider myself shy as well. I used to keep my Asperger's info to myself and not tell anyone. Now I talk about it when I feel comfortable. One more thing, my boyfriend doesn't mind that I have Asperger's and he loves me very much.

Sorry to bore you with all this.

You are not a bore...I enjoy reading about how others see things too. I am so glad you have found someone to talk with about all of it that acceptsyou for who you are and loves you as is.

It's been hell for me and my relationships, but I too feel that I'm blessed with AS.

I'm glad to be what I am, and since being diagnosed, things have been a lot smoother.

Praise God.

Relationships are not easy for me either...lots of things challenge me everyday...(like simple getting through the day)...I am so glad you see the blessings through all your challenges as well.

I've read your posts in the prayer forum and elsewhere, and my heart goes out to you. Physical suffering is bad enough, but added emotional stuff from people where we'd expect to find consolation is extremely difficult. What always brings me comfort is knowing that redemptive suffering saves souls and is extremely pleasing to God. St. Faustina said in her diary that if the angels were capable of envy, they'd envy us 2 things: the reception of Holy Communion and suffering. Another saint (I think St. Rose of Lima) said that if we knew the value of suffering, we'd ask for it.

I myself found out recently I have AS so I can feel somewhat of a kinship with auti and aspis( sorry I misspelled). I am up for teaching interviews right now and hopefully i'll get to coach. I feel this is a blessing for this post.

Thanx for sharing all that tadpole...

I've only recently been diagnosed as having Asperger's after years of being told I had depression, or Bi-Polar - or something else... and as a result being messed up by all sorts of medication that only half helped...

They are now taking me off all medication and are going to concentrate on psycho-therapy and 'behavioural retraining'...

So what you said about your own experiences was REALLY encouraging to me...

Thanx so much for being so open...

Please expand on the therapy and retraining. My son, age 15, has just been diagnosed with AS. The biggest challenge has always been the blurting out of really unacceptable things. Also, he has had a very hard time making and keeping friends. I never know what he is going to say or do next. Lots of fights. Also, what kind of medication were you on. My son is on Straterra which was originally for ADHD. It never quite worked like it was supposed to do, but the reason I never investigated the behavior problems more deeply was because I thought it was all the ADHD.

hi Lisa,I used Straterra myself for Attention deficit Disorder. It worked awhile, then stopped. I have been directed to put my autistic son on the drug and declined. This drug needs more testing.
I have been on and off of Strattera a couple of times...I have found that it too stopped on me..but what I am learning is that it does tend to do that but by stopping it for a week or so and then returning to it...it will continue to work.

I started strattera a few years ago for my diagnosis of ADD (which we now know to bw incorrect or at least only partially correct). But recently heard from a Psychiatrist who works with both ADD kids and Kids on the Autistic Spectrum...and he is not fond of Strattera for kids with ADD...but finds that it works much better for ADD symptoms for those kids on the spectrum for some reason.

Just a few tidbits I thought may be helpful to ponder.
