I agree for the most part with you here, brother. I believe Scripture says that the Pharisees did not understand Christ's speech because they did not obey God's teachings to begin with. 1 Timothy 6:3-4 says any man who does not agree with the words of the Lord Jesus Christ and the doctrine according to godliness is proud and knows nothing. John 3:19-20 says that all who do evil hate the light because their deeds were evil. To abide in His Word is to obey what His Word says. Back in the time of Jesus and His apostles they had both written and the audible voice of God. I don't believe that to be the case today (Although I am open to correction by God's Word of course).

I agree that there are other books mentioned in the Bible that we do not get to see. Here is a list I compiled with a little help from an article I read a long time ago.

Please take note that these are actual books (scrolls), writings, or letters mentioned in the Bible. I had verses for each one of these books, but the forum I had posted this one on had taken down a lot of their old posts.

Anyways, I believe God's Word is settled in Heaven. The complete Word of God (everything written, and spoken, and done by God) is found up in Heaven written down. But I believe God gave us those words that were necessary for His church today. Noah was given certain words by God that were meant for Him, and we are given words today that are meant for us (i.e. His church).

As for the gifts of prophecy and tongues:
I believe these have ceased because we have a more sure word of prophecy (i.e. the commandments that come from Jesus and His followers in the New Testament). 2 Timothy 3:16-17 says all Scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable to lead every man perfect unto every good work. So what does a new revelation like a prophecy and tongue serve if one can already be perfect by God moving in our life by His Word? What new revelation can add to that? The Scriptures say that the Jews required a sign. This is why prophecies and tongues existed during the early days of the church. When Israel scattered in 70AD and mankind would soon have a complete Bible (Especially with the printing process), they would have something that no other man ever had in human history. The Bible. An amazing and beautiful revelation for God's people today. God talks to us with His Word. If a voice (Whether it be an inner voice or an audible voice) seeks to tell us something outside of God's Word, it is false. This is what I mean when I say that we cannot listen to an inner voice alone that is without the backing of Scripture. Everything we do spiritually is in line with God's Word (the Bible) we have today. God could have added more to that revelation or He could have given us less. But I believe He gave us just what we needed in God's Word today to hear His voice.

Love you, brother;
And I hope you understand where I am coming from.

Peace and blessings to you in the Lord today.

Jesus said My sheep hear my voice.

When Jesus said "my sheep hear my voice" what did he mean by 'my voice'? Would we hear a literal voice speaking to us in English? Would he plant thoughts into our minds? Would it be a strong inner feeling? Or what? It is interesting to do a study on God's 'voice' in scripture. If you perform a search in the bible for the word 'voice', picking out the times it is referring to God's voice, you will notice that it is either:

1. The literal voice of God:

Deut 4:12 "Then the Lord spoke to you from the midst of the fire; you heard the sound of words, but you saw no form—only a voice."

Ezekiel 1:28 "Such was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord. And when I saw it, I fell on my face and heard a voice speaking."

Matt 3:17 "and behold, a voice out of the heavens said, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased.”"

Mark 9:7 "Then a cloud formed, overshadowing them, and a voice came out of the cloud, “This is My beloved Son, listen to Him!”

John 12:28 "Then a voice came out of heaven: “I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.” So the crowd of people who stood by and heard it were saying that it had thundered; others were saying, “An angel has spoken to Him.”

Acts 9:4 "he fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?”"

(this is a small selection)

Or
2. it is God's word recorded in Scripture:

Psalm 103:20 "Mighty in strength, who perform His word, obeying the voice of His word!"

Judges 2:20 "So the anger of the Lord burned against Israel, and He said, “Because this nation has transgressed My covenant which I commanded their fathers and has not listened to my voice"

2 Kings 18:12 "because they did not obey the voice of the Lord their God, but transgressed His covenant, even all that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded;

Psalm 106:24-25 "They did not believe in His word, but grumbled in their tents; they did not listen to the voice of the Lord."

Jer 9:13 "The Lord said, “Because they have forsaken My law which I set before them, and have not obeyed My voice nor walked according to it".

Deut 13:18 "if you will listen to the voice of the Lord your God, keeping all His commandments"

Deut 15:5 "if only you listen obediently to the voice of the Lord your God, to observe carefully all this commandment"

Deut 26:14 "I have listened to the voice of the Lord my God; I have done according to all that You have commanded me."

Ex 19:5 "Now then, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant"

Ex 23:21 "But if you truly obey his voice and do all that I say, then I will be an enemy to your enemies and an adversary to your adversaries. " (this is Moses speaking)

Dan 9:10 "nor have we obeyed the voice of the Lord our God, to walk in His teachings which He set before us through His servants the prophets."

Daniel 9:11 "Indeed all Israel has transgressed Your law and turned aside, not obeying Your voice;"

1 Sam 12:14 "If you will fear the Lord and serve Him, and listen to His voice and not rebel against the command of the Lord"

1 Sam 12:14 "If you will not listen to the voice of the Lord, but rebel against the command of the Lord,"

Jer 11:3-4 "Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, “Cursed is the man who does not heed the words of this covenant which I commanded your forefathers ..., saying, ‘Listen to My voice, and do according to all which I command you; so you shall be My people"

Jer 26:12-13 "The Lord sent me to prophesy against this house and against this city all the words that you have heard. Now therefore amend your ways and your deeds and obey the voice of the Lord your God".

Jer 40:2-3 "The Lord your God promised this calamity against this place; and the Lord has brought it on and done just as He promised. Because you people sinned against the Lord and did not listen to His voice, therefore this thing has happened to you".

Psalm 81:11 “But My people did not listen to My voice, And Israel did not obey Me.

There is nowhere that says God's voice is an inner feeling or thoughts popping into our minds. When Jesus said my "sheep hear my voice" we are told this was a figure of speech (John 10:6). Jesus is not literally a shepherd; we are not literally sheep; and we not literally hear his audible voice. It is a metaphor. So if it not the literal audible voice of God, then it must surely be other option - His voice is his speaking to us in scripture.

This is what scripture says about looking to our minds for answers:

Proverbs 28:26 "Whoever trusts in his own mind is a fool"

Jeremiah 17:9 "The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?"

Jeremiah 23:16 Thus says the Lord of hosts: “Do not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you, filling you with vain hopes. They speak visions of their own minds, not from the mouth of the Lord.

That passage doesn't anything about receiving new revelations via our thoughts and feelings.

If Jesus is in believers does he ever speak to believers? Yes.

Ephesians 4:21
"If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus:"

Only the King James versions and its derivatives translate Eph 4:21 in that way, and it should not be taken out of context from the previous verse. Other bible versions give a more accurately translation of these 2 verses. It does not say we hear Christ personally, nor does it say we are taught by him as the KJV erroneously makes it appear.

ESV "But that is not the way you learned Christ!— assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, "

NIV "That, however, is not the way of life you learned when you heard about Christ and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus. "

NASB "But you did not learn Christ in this way, if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught in Him, just as truth is in Jesus."

RSV "You did not so learn Christ!— assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus."

NLT " But that isn’t what you learned about Christ. Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him,"

It is the written word of God that abides in us.

"14 ... and the word of God abideth in you, ...24 Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father.

This passage is speaking about Paul's words as an apostle and spokesman of Christ. It says nothing about God speaking new revelations to us via our thoughts or feelings.

Apostles and prophets were only for the foundation of the church.... "having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the corner stone," Eph 2:20

Based on the information you have given me, it appears that your experience was of God (or genuine) because it appeared to glorify God's Word in helping you to tell the person to repent (Which is biblical).

One passage the Lord has brought to my attention on this topic is this one:

11 "And when they bring you unto the synagogues, and unto magistrates, and powers, take ye no thought how or what thing ye shall answer, or what ye shall say:
12 For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say." (Luke 12:11-12).

But I believe this is a part of prophecy or Scripture. Can God talk to us today in other circumstances? You may believe this is normal, but for me, I feel it is by His Word that He talks to me currently. I cannot confirm or deny what experiences you had and if they led you deeper into His Word. What I know is that I do not feel guided by GOD to be open to hearing exactly like that yet in my life. I am more cautious. I believe GOD can let me know in other ways without an audible voice exactly. I would need a verse that says that God still audibly talks to us still for all future generations of believers. I say this because the Bible suggests in other ways that there are to be no more words and that prophesy will pass away, etc. Am I hearing God wrong on these verses? Perhaps. This is something for me to pray more about and to seek the answer on. My focus in life is on His Word. I am alive when I am in His Word. For me: It is foreign to separate Scripture from any part of my life. For you said that you can hear God without Scripture. For me, my hearing of GOD was by the exaltation of Scripture. I hope this was just a misunderstanding and that you feel the same way. But if not, I still love you brother, and I am wishing you nothing but good things to you in the Lord Jesus Christ.

You can say that all you want but scripture proves you wrong.
One who speaks in a tongue edifies himself; but one who prophesies edifies the church. Now I wish that you all spoke in tongues, but even more that you would prophesy; and greater is one who prophesies than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may receive edifying.” (1 Corinthians 14:4–5) (NASB95)

Please note that understanding what is said results in edification. And those who spoke in tongues edified themselves. So they understood what they were saying. This is not the case today. Tongues today are nothing like the originals.

John was talking about what God revealed to him on Patmos and Paul was speaking of Jesus' return.
Paul was speaking about John's Revelation of Jesus Christ. "That would ALSO confirm believers unto the end." Paul was not speaking about the return of Christ on the last day (end).

That's why every preacher who preaches God's Word should pray earnestly that the voice of God is heard through his preaching. He may form the words, but it is the Lord who needs to do the real talking.

He also needs to be speaking to those the Lord has designated him to speak to.

Paul would have failed had he gone to Asia as he'd intended.

Tongues have ceased.
“Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. Again, you add to scripture. It says, SHALL CEASE not has ceased. Fundamentalists reject scripture and add to it, as well, in order to push a corrupt understanding of God. No where in scripture does the thought that the gifts of the Spirit would stop before the return of Jesus. It was not even invented for around 1600 years afterward. All of the gifts of the Holy Spirit were embraced within the Church and exists today as they did in the 1st century.

As long as God's Holy Spirit lives in man, gifts of the Spirit will also be granted.

Yes Luke 12 is a good verse it is similar to this one with a difference

“ Matthew 10 - 19. But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak. 20. For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.”

And as far as prophecy goes your sins and your daughters shall prophesy. Paul encouraged the Corinthians to prophesy and to seek it. Yet we do not have any if these words that many many did written down. They had scripture and still could prophesy one by one that all may learn and all may be comforted

As far as the section that is used by many today who say the gifts have ceased the verse used is this one

1 Corinthians 13 - 8. Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. 9. For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. 10. But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away. 11. When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. 12. For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.”

It simply says they “shall” fail and cease. It does not say they "have failed" or ceased yet. The time went they will be no more is when we see Jesus face to face as Paul mentions here.

Paul also says, when that which is perfect is come. This is not referring to the scriptures. But the word “perfect” in Greek is “teleios” meaning complete as In growth or full of age the perfect man as it is implied in vs's 10,11. This is the same word Paul used in Ephesians 4:13

“ Ephesians 4 - 13. Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:”

So all the gifts in Ephesians 4:11 are still needed those being apostles and prophets, pastors and evangelist and teachers. If we get rid of apostles and prophets (spoken of for the church after the resurrection and so different in ministration than the original 12 although they overlap into the new Testament) then we must get rid of pastors also.

But the perfect man is when we see Jesus face to face. Then we will be perfect.

Paul said,

“ Philippians 3 - 11. If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead. 12. Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus.”

Romans 8 - 19. For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God...23. And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.”

Also, consider when men pray to God and commune with their own heart and they are talking in spirit to God. He also teaches them and works in them and directs their steps and speaks to the heart.

None of this will contradict scripture if it is the Lord.

Even when reading scripture we cannot really understand the spiritual things unless Jesus works in us and opens our understanding and teaches us.

Luke 24 - 32. And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?”

It says they “shall cease” nowhere does it say they “have ceased”

Paul is speaking of when that which is perfect has come that is when we have a perfect glorified body (the redemption of our body) and when we see Jesus “face to face” asPaul said. The same Greek word for “perfect” is used in connection to the gifts of pastors apostles prophets etc, in Ephesians 4:11-14. Meaning the perfect man. (See my post 232 for more info)

Paul says whenever perfection comes, faith, hope and love would remain (1 Corinthians 13:13) and tongues, prophecy will cease (1 Corinthians 13:8). If as you say, prophecy, tongues and interpretation remain until the end of the world, Paul's comparison is meaningless. So Paul inferred tongues would stop sometime before Christ’s return on the last day, when hope and faith find fulfillment in the new world and love remains.

To all:

God can speak to us today through His word spoken as written down as scripture. Wen we as believers hear the scripture inwardly God reveals the truth of it and the word works in those who believe.

God speaks to us through life situation and creation and many various ways through circumstances and events and observing others and many life lessons.

God can speak audibly or in the still small voice in the heart. He speaks by His Spirit to the heart and mind.

God can speak through others to us who have a message or revelation of truth or scripture.

We see something of this here

1 Corinthians 14 - 24. But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all: 25. And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth.”

God speaks to us in prayer as we wait on him and watch unto prayer.

God can speak through dreams and visions to seal instruction and keep us from pride etc. And in these last days he will also give men dreams and visions. And we are still in the last days.

God speaks and teaches by the anointing which teaches us all things. Through faith this anointing abides in us. Jesus also said that without him we can do nothing. He is in us and we in him through faith. God works in us to will and to do and to make us perfect unto every good work working in us that which is wellpleasing in His sight through Jesus Christ.

No, when we see him face to face and are in the perfect man then there will be no more need for the prophecy tongues and knowledge in part for then we will know as we are known.

There were so many believers in the early church as we see from scripture that could prophesy and many did have such gifts and yet what they said is not written down. Some were called prophets and we do not have every word they said written doen Acts 13
