This nation became great without an official language. What is the benefit of adopting one?

I'm not offended as someone wanting an official language. I'm offended at wasting tax dollars one something that has no benefit.

The USA has never *had* linguistic unity. The drive towards everyone speaking English only began during the great depression, really. There are probably millions of pensioners in the US who grew up speaking Italian or German or Swedish.

No? Gee, I must have misplaced them.

Here's the issue. I don't care what language anyone speaks at home, what language they write in, etc. etc. I like language variety, and think it's grand even to have areas in my American city where you're not buying a tuna sandwich if you don't speak Tagalog, but I seriously don't want to waste everyone's time and money printing everything in every conceivable language and trying to have public schools teach in everyone's native tongue.

The overhead for that is unsupportable.
