It evolved to be good enough for us to learn from our successes & failures; accurate memory for incidental details was an unnecessary waste of resources.

So we generally remember the gist of events and a 'snapshot' or two, from which we can reconstruct a rough version of events. Plausible details may be added during reconstruction. All this has been experimentally demonstrated in many people.
