• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I was quitting.
I quit for a few days.
I took a drag off of a friends cig, after all whats a drag?
Next day smoked a whole one.
Next day smoked about three.
Next day bought a pack.
Since then, about a pack a day again.
This addiction is ridiculous I feel like I have to move off of the planet to escape it. I am so weak! So weak!
Does anyone know what types of aides work, like nicotrol inhaler, patches, nicotine gum, does anyone have any success stories from any of these?
Does any of that junk ever work?
i know i will defeat this some day, but its so imbedded in my lifestyle it seems.
I need some serious incentive. And sadly enough, premature death, lung cancer, emphazima, bad breath, heart problems and yellow teeth arent enough to make me quit.
someone get me an exorcist.

Take a deep breath and chill for a minute. Congragulations on quitting for a couple of days. Unfortunately there is nothing I can tell you that will help you achieve your goal - this your journey so to speak. I gave up so many times it wasn't funny. I am talking hundreds of times. It got to the point when I don't think I believed I was really quiiting for good (everyone else had already given up on my long term quit except of course my mum). Anyway the point is don't let this set back rule your life - find out what caused your first stumble (ie the first drag with a mate) and think of next time what you will do instead (ie either use a patch, chew gum, go for a walk, get yourself a drink) and how you may have avoided the situation altogether (for me it was changing my type of alcohol and sitting in non-smoking areas of a pub or restaurant as well as avoiding people who I knew triggered me to want to smoke and they weren't all smokers). So all I can say is learn from your mistakes, set another quit date, pray about and get support from everyone. I know it is sad but some people won't want you to change and sometimes you may not want to change because the fear of the unknown is sometimes greater than the want to succeed. Anyway I have now finally quit smoking. It has been 2 months and I have slipped up twice which is fantastic so after all is said, it can be done.
Praying for your successful quit and the time until then, Evie

i believe that the best way is to replace cigs with something. like when you have a craving, eat a pickle or a peice of candyu. also smoking habits dwell not only in the icky smoke but in the habit of holding someting in your hand work with this i a way simillar to the other i mentioned. good luck

What people don't realize is that one drag of a cigarette to a smoker,is like one drink to an alcoholic. When you quit ,you must continually remind yourself of that fact every time you even think about just taking one drag, or just buying 1 pack. I know,I've been there and quit for over 1 year until I took that 1-drag! It is like your tolerance level increases each time you go back to smoking your habit will be worse than before. If you were a pack-a-day smoker before, you will smoke 1 1/2 or more next time. Praise the Lord,I was annointed and prayer over and delivered from cigarrettes! It has beenover 3 months now and I seldom even think of smoking.

markthomas - first of all, good luck!

i am a smoker and have thought about giving up myself. I wouldnt personally go for patches as you still get the nicotine (spelling?) and then have to quit the patches/gum (if you get what i mean?)

I think the best way is having the personal will power (and prayer!) to give up. One friend gave up by eating crisps when she wanted a dig (lol be careful you dont put on the pounds though) and that worked for her. another friend did hypnosis and that wrked for him (although I know someone else who did that and it had no effect on them).

I don't know if you have already done it or not, but the main things (imo) is to throw away all cigarettes, ashtrays, lighters, etc.....clean everything to get rid of the smoke smell and then avoid places and situations where you could be tempted to smoke. Also telling other people that you have quit smoking is important.

All my own opinions of course!

Oh, and I've been told that sucking up small amounts of water through a straw is good when you have cravings (the straw is meant to be like a ciagrette!)

Anyway, if you want to quit, you will, it will take time and perseverance!

All the best!

Well all I can say is........stop smoking now before you have health problems. I stopped today after smoking 23 years and waited to long to stop. My doctor told me I have emphasima and I'm only 41 years old. It has taken me to hear this, to stop for good now. Please keep me in your prayers. Julie

a big part of smoking is not being able to get the cigarette off your mind. You wouldnt be tempted by it if its not on your mind. So in your prayers, just ask God to let you fall in love with Him. Keep asking Him and soon enough, He'll constantly be on your mind to where you completely forget about cigarettes! Thats how He helped me quit.

I have made many posts in this forum about how the patch worked for me. I used the Nicotine Transdermal System which I got at the drugstore for about $20 for 7 patches. I followed through on all three steps and took 3 weeks of patches. Then I went off and haven't smoked since. I haven't had a smoke since July 1. I think the patch is a Godsend.

Hey man. I know what u going thru. I had EXACTLY the same problem! I tried to quit a few months ago. I had been clean a month...and then had 1 (ONE!!!!!!!) drag! That was the end of it. Back to a pack a day!

Soblessed53 makes and excellent point abt a drag to a smoker being the same as a drink to an alcoholic.

PRAY PRAY PRAY and STAAAAAAAY AWAY!!!!!!

Whatever u associate cigarettes with...try avoid. Like me and coffee...or certain places or certain times. When you would smoke, do something else instead. its working 4 me :)
Whatever you do...don't replace smoking with something else...cos then u'll have 2 beat that addiction afterwards.

GO COLD TURKEY WITH GOD BY YOUR SIDE!!!!!!!
