FDA signs off on updated Covid-19 vaccines that target circulating variants

The US Food and Drug Administration on Monday gave the green light to updated Covid-19 vaccine booster shots from Moderna and Pfizer/BioNTech. The updated vaccines are each approved for people 12 and older and are authorized under emergency use for individuals 6 months through 11 years old. As part of the FDA’s update, the original bivalent Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccines are no longer authorized for use in the United States.

The mRNA vaccines have been updated to teach the body to fight the XBB.1.5 Omicron subvariant of the coronavirus and other closely related strains that are circulating.

Both vaccine manufacturers have said that testing shows that their vaccines are effective against EG.5, the currently dominant strain in the United States.

After the FDA’s go-ahead, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, a group of independent experts that advises the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on its vaccination decisions, will weigh the safety and effectiveness of the updated vaccines and make recommendations for their use. After the CDC director signs off on those recommendations, the vaccines can be administered.

Under the Affordable Care Act, most insurance plans are covering the full cost of vaccines, without co-pays. So most insured people will be able to get the updated Covid-19 vaccine at their doctor’s offices or pharmacies, such as CVS or Walgreens, at no cost.

Makes tons of sense since it's already out there and everyone has been exposed, not to mention variants are weakening, as is customary.
The body doesn't really need "teaching" from "vaccines" that neither prevent contraction or transmission.

There was very little testing, and as I recall, it was for 14 days. Yeah, right....that's so useful.

But....just "Trust us":
"In June, the FDA asked drugmakers to formulate the fall boosters to target the then-dominant XBB.1.5 subvariant.

While that particular strain is no longer as prevalent — accounting only for about 3% of new Covid cases the week ending Sept. 2, according to the CDC — other strains in circulation are still closely related to XBB.1.5.

One of the predominant strains is called EG.5, which accounts for about 22% of new cases. Another, FL.1.5.1, accounts for about 15% of new cases."

Sure, sure. Just say, "well, it's closely related so it WILL WORK." That's been the M.O. since the beginning.

Make completely unprovable assertions with credentials and then silence any others with vast credentials who disagree and prove it with the science, using government agencies silencing media (Missouri v. Biden).

Or in the case of Rachel Maddow and President Biden and others - make authoritative assertions (you won't get sick if you get the vaccine) WITHOUT any credentials at all in the area of health, and if you say it authoritatively enough, the gullible will fall for it.

Why is doing what one thinks might help “wrong”, though?

DeSantis discourages latest covid boosters (for those under 65), contradicting federal guidance

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) and the state’s surgeon general are warning residents under age 65 against the new coronavirus booster, going against the advice of federal health officials who have recommended the shots.

“I will not stand by and let the FDA and CDC use healthy Floridians as guinea pigs for new booster shots that have not been proven to be safe or effective,” DeSantis said in a statement after the callwith Ladapo and other doctors, which opened with the title “No way FDA.”

My advice is to prioritize the advice from the CDC and FDA over the governor.

You might wish to review what studies were done on this new one, which is already out of date, as it was created for a variant that basically came and went and now there are others.

I'm glad you didn't mention that variants are weakening, since I'm not aware of any evidence that they are. As far as I know, all of the Omicron strains have been similar in virulence, making them less virulent than Delta and roughly on a par with the original virus.

Well, yeah, that is how immunity works.
That's been the M.O. since the beginning.
That's been the way immunity works since viruses have been around.

Every infectious disease doctor, epidemiologist, and public health official I know -- and I know a lot -- is vaccinated and gets boosters when they're available. I have no doubt that one can find some expert somewhere who thinks, well, almost anything, but the absolutely overwhelming consensus among experts is that the mRNA vaccines are highly safe and highly effective. Getting boosted is clearly much less important than getting some kind of primary immunity (either from vaccination or from infection), but there is no doubt that boosting is useful for reducing the risk of severe disease and very likely useful for reducing the risk of long Covid.

You might wish to review post #9 and the OP, where your point was already addressed.
