Natural selection doesn't produce new life forms, it only acts on existing life forms.

For the materialist, the design we see in life is an illusion. The free will we "think" we have is an illusion. The design in the parameters of the universe is an illusion. For the materialist there is so much illusion I don't know how they tell what is truth and what is not.
