I will say though, that it is my personal opinion that God is not actually burning these people or anything like that, rather he is allowing them to be tormented by their own selves. They lived their lives in sin without repenting, and have to deal with the consequences. Their souls still having sinful desires, with no way to relieve it, their regrets, their guilt, etc.

This however is not a crucial as the doctrine of hell itself and whether eternal punishment in the sense of torment exists - that is more important imo.

It'd be nice if someone would come on these forums to talk about this topic and justify God instead of man. Notice the man-centered focus of the post. It's about man being punished rather than transgressing against a holy God. Jesus Christ, the holy One of God, suffered and died on the cross because God won't ever forgive sin. God preferred to have His Son go to the cross and be made sin, rather than forgive sin.

Why does hell exist? For the devil and his angels, and anyone who follows after them. We, as forgiven sinners, deserve hell, and we as Christians should never, ever forget that. When man starts believing he doesn't deserve hell anymore he starts to accuse God of unrighteousness in his heart because he has forgotten he was cleansed of his past sins. This post is at the least, blasphemy against a holy God who ordained hell because of His righteousness and justice. Sin will be paid for and if it isn't at the cross of Jesus Christ, it will be meted out in hell forever.

    Revelation 20:15

Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire

    Romans 6:23

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

God does not and will not forgive sin apart from the atoning work of Jesus Christ on the cross.

    2 Corinthians 5:21

For he has made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

Jesus Christ was made sin on our behalf

I hadn't noticed that the source I used was Armstrong. The only familiarity I have with Armstrong is with his radio broadcasts which I listened to in Chicago many decades ago, I was always impressed with the clear and convincing manner that he expounded biblical concepts.

Its show and tell time....time for everybody to bring their god and tell us what he would and would not do....in their opinion.

We will be instructed that all pleasant things in the bible have been properly translated and can be taken at face value, all unpleasant things have not been translated correctly and we can ignore them....eternal when used in regard to life means eternal but when used in regard to punishment it means temporary or not at all,etc etc.

Thanks for the link! I just went there and the subjects under discussion are indeed fascinating. What was Armstrong's denominational affiliation?

The Bible says regarding Satan and the devil (who one might argue is the most evil and least forgivable):

    The Book of Revelation:

{20:1} And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his
hand. {20:2} And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a
thousand years, {20:3} And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should
deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.

They do support my statement. If everyone whose name is not in the book of life is thrown into the lake of fire, God isn't ever forgiving their sin. You have to be forgiven through Jesus Christ to be in the book of life. Instead of forgiving them, Jesus was made sin so that we can be forgiven through His death.

    You made a blanket statement:
"God won't ever forgive sin. God preferred to have His Son go to the cross and be made sin, rather than forgive sin."

You made no qualifier---such as those who are written in the book of life----
God does forgive sin---He has forgiven all sin through the blood of Jesus. Jesus paid the price for all sin, death. We just have to believe in Him and accept it. Those who do not, can not be forgiven, for they have not repented and asked for it, thus their name can not be written in the book of life.
