Capitol Police Suspends 6 Officers, Investigates Dozens More After Capitol Riots

February 19, 2021

"The investigation into the January 6 attack remains under investigation. Our Office of Professional Responsibility is investigating the actions of 35 police officers from that day. We currently have suspended six of those officers with pay," the department said in a statement.

Capitol Police Acting Chief Yogananda Pittman further directed that any member whose behavior is not in keeping with the department's Rules of Conduct "will face appropriate discipline."

The department "has been actively reviewing video and other open source materials of some USCP officers and officials that appear to be in violation of Department regulations and policies," she said on Jan. 11.

Videos from the day of the attack appear to show some officers escorting rioters inside the building. In one video, USCP officers can be seen opening barricades allowing the mob to enter the Capitol complex without resistance.

If you've been given very explicit details about this matter in another thread, then do you think those details won't be valid if you start another on exactly the same subject?

If an establishment is closed to the public, and I go in without the owner's permission--I am in violation of the law and can be charged at minimum with trespassing. The Capital police do not own The Capital even if they let the people in error; hence they were suspended pending the investigation.

Hot tip if you're discussing it with your wife. As I was a couple of years back with some friends. Someone said 'Hey, you could actually wake up one morning and not even recognise Caz (my wife)'

Didn't skip a beat. I replied 'But it wouldn't be all bad. Because then I'd be able to fall in love with her all over again.'

Hoo ah! All the girls, including my wife went 'Ahh...'. The guys just rolled their eyes.

Giving yourself a multi-use “get-out-of-jail” card in public is a two-edged beast.

Capitol police are custodians of the capitol, they allow or disallow people's entrance

Capitol police are custodians of the capitol, they allow or disallow people's entrance
to areas that are open to the public. They are not authorized, of their own volition, to admit entrance into areas closed off to the public.

Is it lawful for a policeman standing on the street to allow a stranger to enter your home without your permission?

The former prosecutor who oversaw the initial response to the Capitol Riot in early 2021, Michael Sherwin, said he had rejected many potential trespass cases at the outset of the investigation because suspects did not engage in violence, property damage or pushing over barricades.

“That changed when I left. I don’t know who authorized it, but I refused,” Sherwin said in an interview. “I had a bright-line rule … that people should not have been charged if they just walked in through an open door.”

Maybe that’s why he “left”?

Michael Sherwin also does not have the authority to allow people into an area closed to the public. He may choose not to prosecute, but that does not mean a crime was not committed.

If I leave my front door wide open and go to the store, that just means a stranger who entered did not break in. They are still trespassing and if they take things or damage things, that is still a crime despite my door being open.

Once again, capitol doors were open as attendees entered, capitol police removed barricades and invited many of the attendees into the capitol with escorts through the building

Yes the Capitol police were/are custodians of the capitol building, and yes Michael Sherwin was initial lead prosecutor of the Jan 6th event

No. Every breach of the Capitol (door or window) was by violence or chicanery. None were intentionally opened (one was accidentally) by the police.

Who care who was the US Attorney for DC until March 2021? Of what relevance is he to the reality of the event.

Nobody claimed otherwise, yes there were thugs and vandals present in the vast minority of attendees, and I support their prosecution

Initial prosecutor Michael Sherwin stated his recommendation on not charging those who walked through an open door, who weren't violent, destructive, or pushing barricades, a big thing for the world to see, regardless of your opinion

You claimed the USCP were letting in the rioters. They did not.

So what? It's just his opinion. I've got mine, you've got yours. He's not on this board, so I don't care what his opinion is.

Quote US Capitol Police Chief Below:

"Videos from the day of the attack appear to show some officers escorting rioters inside the building. In one video, USCP officers can be seen opening barricades allowing the mob to enter the Capitol complex without resistance."

And your opinion disagrees with the Capitol Police Chief above

Yes police removed barricades and let attendees into the complex, yes they were escorting them in the building
