Stars appear to be millions of light years away, just as my mother appears to be in her late sixties (sorry, ma). If I'm to believe stars are only 6000 years old, then I can claim my mother is three years old.

No, A4C, that is the way you would have it. If I believed in a God, I would not expect him to give me five senses and a mind, only to not provide me with a benchmark in using those senses. In your belief, our minds and senses cannot be trusted. With such a belief system, I would have no way to measure truth. If the stars appear ancient but are actually young, I have no way of knowing whether your book is also young. Have you considered that? Maybe the Bible was written when you were in your mother's womb. Maybe it just appears to be old. How would you know? You weren't there when it was written.

1.If we did evolve from monkeys then how come babies aren't born monkeys

Because we are now humans and according to the ToE life forms give birth to their own species not another species. You should find out what the ToE says before you attack it so that you don’t make the mistake of attacking something the ToE does not say.

2.Even Darwin said his theories were wrong before he died so why do you still believe them

Firstly it wouldn’t matter if he did. If Einstein recanted reletivity it would not suddenly mean the theory was wrong.

Secondly, and much more importantly, it has long been known that Darwin did not recant his theory, thats a lie put about by unscrupulous sources. many creationist sites acknowledge this fact.

3.do you really not believe the bible it says we were created in seven days not millions of years

Genesis is allegorical, God left us the evidence in his creation that he created us by the process of evolution.

4.how come we cant speak monkey

Language developed after the divergence of hominids form the common ancestor. Also languages develop and change all the time. I notice you are American, your native tongue is presumably English yes? Do you speak Anglo Saxon? It was one of the pre-cursors to modern English. What about French? If you have any English heritage you almost certainly have some Norman in your ancestry, why don’t you speak their language?

My father was Turkish but I don’t speak Turkish, if your notion that we should mysteriously know our ancestors languages i should be fluent in it.

What about the population of the UK, by your argument we should all speak English, Old English, Anglo Saxon, French, Latin and Norse at the very least but we don’t. Why is that exactly? You know if your idea that we all mysteriously understand our ancestors languages without being taught it.

Why don't modern Egyptians understand Hieroglyphs?
Or modern Italians speak Latin?

Humans are still apes, Apes is a classification further back in the taxonomic tables than Homo sapiens. Similarly we are also Primates, mammals and Eukaryotes.

No one is calling you stupid they are calling you ignorant, there is a very big difference. Ignorance simply means not knowing about something. I hold a good degree and several post grad diplomas in a couple of fields so I am not stupid. However I know nothing what so ever about engineering, thus on the subject of engineering I am ignorant.

The reason they are calling you ignorant of evolution is that you display a number of false ideas about what evolution states.

To begin with you seem to think evolution happens to individuals (you think babies should be born as monkeys). That is not what the theory states at all, in fact if this happened it would disprove evolution.

Evolution is the change in allele frequency over generations. Now that's a complex peace of Jargon but basically it means this. When you are born you inherit some of your mothers characteristics and some of your fathers, however the mechanism that creates you from the ovum and the sperm is basically a series of copying sequences. On average there is one mistake made every million base pairs in your DNA. We know that, we can test it in labs and observe it.

Now there are billions of base pairs copied to make you. That means thousands of mistakes are made. these mistakes are called “Mutations”. Most of them have no effect at all. Some of them are harmful, and some of them have an advantage. For example, a mutation that has occurred in some humans makes those that have it immune to HIV. The mutation I have has elevated my sense of smell above the usual human range. In the wild that would give me a big survival advantage, in civilisation it makes little difference (actually there is an argument that i would have died back in 1984 without it, but that's another story).

Now, when some one who has a mutation has children they often have that mutation passed on to them, and sometimes that mutation is further mutated if there is another copying error in the same base pair.

According to the theory of evolution, if these mutations increase your chance of living long enough to have children, the mutation will almost certainly be passed to them and so on.

Once enough generations have passed these mutations have accumulated to the point where the current generation is radically different from the original population.

Now even most creationists agree that mutations lead to variations in life forms. We use that very principle when we bread dogs and horses to be better suited for the role we want them to take on.

What those creationists do not accept is that these accumulations of changes could ever result in new species emerging. They claim there is a genetic barrier that stops, for example, changes in a breed of dog before the changes accumulate to the level where we could no longer consider it a dog. They have never shown us any such genetic barrier and the argument makes no sense. If changes accumulate over generations, and taxonomic classifications are only man made guidelines anyway, why would the changes suddenly stop before they accumulated to a level when a generation is no longer the same species as the original generation some million years back or more?

We see animals today that are very hard to classify. The duck billed platypus for example, we consider it a mammal because it has more in common with mammals than any other classification of animal, but it also has elements that are usually not mammalian, for example it is oviparous (it lays eggs) not viviparous (gives birth to live young). It is a perfect example of an animal in which the accumulated changes have moved the current generations out of whatever classification its ancient predecessors would have been in.

Remember species, order, phylum all of those are just man made classifications that help us group animals together by their biological similarities. “Kind” is exactly the same, except its less well defined.

Basically when God inspired the bible the authors went,

“I am sorry God, I don’t quite understand the technical explanations, could I simplify it, perhaps use an allegory or something?”

God, being God knew that one day we would get the more detailed facts from observing his creation with the methods and learning we hadn’t finished developing back then. genesis was more important as a story about our relation ship to god than as a literal description of how to build a universe.

I am a Christian and I don't share your optimism.

Mind you in the last 34 years I’ve lost relatives, friends, my first fiancee, more money than I care to think about, the ceiling in my front room, and there isn’t a single month goes by where something bad doesn’t happen.

These days I am just happy to wake up at all.

Conversely my best friend is an agnostic and he seems biologically incapable of being anything BUT happy. If he woke up tomorrow with cancer he would find the bright side.

The world wouldn't be much different if tomorrow we forgot all about the bible, if you consider that 5 of the worlds 6 billion people get on fine everyday without it! And furthermore, living standards and mortality rates have climbed over the last thousand years as the influence of the church waned-only science really helps make quality of life better in the long run.

I can only hope you'll at least try thinking for yourself sometime in the future.
