  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

And so the thread has successfully been turned from the Common Core worksheets to a debate about the source.

Well Sis, since we don't have anything beyond a handful of blogisphere sites making claims and a known propagandist taking his slight as 100% guaranteed scientific proof of the claims in the OP, what else is there to discuss? Perhaps some intrepid investigator could get a copy of the workbook and check it's content.

Nah, that would require work. Better to spread rumor and innuendo over the Internet than to fact check, right?

Where have I seen that tactic advocated before?

Oh don't be coy. Let us know. Alinsky? Himmler? Bill Nye?

I'm just getting bored with your repetitiveness. especially since you don't address the issue.

Again, what issue? The school didn't reply to Todd's e-mails therefore.... we can't draw any conclusions other than... they didn't reply to Todd's e-mails. What else is there to discuss until we have more information?

I will say that this sort of instruction doesn't need to include religious figures in a historical context. There's plenty of literary figures that could be used in a historical context and would be even more appropriate for English instruction.

What am I supposed to think when you keep calling Todd Starnes a liar,

I really don't care what you think, but I will say this - I'm not calling him a liar. I have shown him to be a liar (and a hypocrite), which is more than HE EVER DID with regard to the story in the OP.

You're implying that he's "evil" in your view,

Sorry chum. I never said he was "evil" (scare quotes or not) period. So don't lie about me and tell me I'm calling him "evil". Got it?

You're only proving my earlier point...

I pointed out what form of propaganda it falls under, how about instead of attacking me you actually try reading...

Neat!

You're admitting your earlier comment was off-base then?

Here, let me help you out since you're having trouble.

This is me making a comment - "Neat!"
This is me admitting my earlier comment was off-base - "My earlier comment was off-base".

Do you understand the difference?

Any other juvenile personal attacks?

Do you deny that you deny that evolution happened?

I never said you were the one that made it, I was just making a general comment since some of the people in the thread I'm referring to are participating in this topic.

http://www.christianforums.com/t7854586/

So you have a reference.

Neat!

Only in the US would it be considered a bad thing for children to learn about their world.

It is not considered a bad thing in the US for children to learn about their world.

Propagandizing children is something that is harder to do in a free country though, because people actually care enough about their children in America to raise a stink up about those kinds of things when they see them done.

America is a little different that way from many other countries to be sure.

Ah hah! Finally found something and I do think these questions are totally inappropriate for a vocabulary lesson. I'm not going to link to it because of language and racist content, but if you find Dianne Lynn Savage's profile on Facebook, she had a friend scan one redacted (a single question) and two full pages.

I found it and I don't see the problem aside from the questions being poorly written.

Also, did anyone establish what this had to do with common core?

Nothing.

Common Core Standards require students to be able to recognize the meaning of new vocabulary words by reading them in context, which is what the assignment does. As for the content of the assignment, I agree that it crosses the line, but that isn't covered by CCS.

Make no mistake -- I'm no fan of Common Core -- but it would be better to focus on its numerous legitimate faults, and not try to blame this sort of nonsense on it.

While I'm not gonna hop on the outrage bandwagon, I think some of the more conservative commenters here have a point buried under all the words.

It has been my experience that larger and more diverse school districts tend to see the rule of separation of church and state in terms of Christianity. Thus, they tend to be careful--and sometimes overly restrictive--about expressions of Christianity and more lenient about expressions of other religions. Thus, these vocabulary worksheets giving a Muslim context for some English words and the lack of vocabulary worksheets giving a Christian context for some English words.

I doubt there is any intent to proselytize here; just school administrators being incompetent again and not thinking through their assumptions.

I would like to think you are correct here, as many public school administrators epitomize the Peter Principal. But given the public school system is dominated by progressives it is most probable intent outweighs incompetence.

Don't underestimate the power of incompetence. :)

Christ's power is within the spirit. I do believe that people ought to be exposed to different ways of thinking, different belief systems, and even different outlooks so they can make up their own minds. Would Jesus want us to isolate your children when Christians are called to go out into the world and minister? Even if Christian doctrine isn't taught in schools isn't the love of Christ able to exist?

There is nothing wrong with raising your children in Christ, but hopefully you've raised them to love everyone regardless of any factor you may disagree with.
