An official familiar with the matter confirmed to ABC News that days after Vance's visit, Col. Sussanah Meyers wrote an email to base personnel that distanced the base from some of the vice president's comments about Denmark, of which Greenland is a semi-autonomous territory.

Military.com was the first to report the contents of the email, in which it said Meyers suggested that Vance's criticisms of Denmark were not shared by Pituffik.

During his visit, Vance accused Denmark of failing to provide adequate security against "very aggressive incursions from Russia, from China and from other nations." The vice president underscored President Donald Trump's repeated suggestion that the U.S. needs to acquire Greenland for national security reasons.

[Without having read the letter, I assume this was indeed a misstep by the commander. If you're non-political, you're non-political.]

Her mistake was saying that the base didn't share the same view as the official US government position of a military take over, enslavement of the population, and steal the resources. She probably didn't want to deal with added attention and protests outside and her troops being harassed by the locals.

I'm sure she and any others have learned what happens when you disobey.

Oh Sussanah, if Russian missiles ever come over the pole you'll wish Greenland was bristling with US anti-missile SAM's..;)

Which we certainly could have placed there without issue, prior to the president setting fire to the relationship with them.

Still, stationed in Tahiti... just saying.
That was my little joke. The cliche is that military people get punished by being sent to man a radar tower in Alaska. But when your command is in Greenland, maybe that's a step up?

There’s a story, I’m sure apocryphal, of a generals plane landing at Thule late at night. They call for someone to come pump the black tank and they arrive at a leisurely pace to fulfill the request in the subzero night. The general meets the languid airman as he’s attending to his task with no sense of urgency and began dispensing a brow beating that is received with obvious indifference. After being berated he’s threatened with a worse assignment to which he replied:

“Sir I’m pumping a [expletive deleted] and I’m in Thule, what else is there?”

To which the general had no reply.

John Larroquette agrees with this.

True story, because it happened to me. PFC stationed in Germany during the first gulf war. Guard duty at the airfield I was housed on (was actually signal repair with an army intelligence unit). We only had one military member on guard duty because we had locals who normally maned the gates so we were just supplemental.

A two star general comes through on some sort of an inspection. The civilian guard waves them through, I poke my head out to see what was going on, then duck back into the guardhouse. Car goes down the road about twenty feet then comes to a stop and a captain comes charging out the back hollering about "When a general comes through you are supposed to salute the car! Where is the military discipline?! Rawr!... " The general leans out the side of the car and calls out "Captain, get your (butt) back in this car and leave that poor solider alone. He is here to keep the base safe not observe etiquette." Hang dog, the captain trudges back to the car and they drive off.

Similar story, I was at Naval Station Treasure Island and a four star was visiting. I worked at the BOQ and didn't notice the Admiral behind me watching what I was doing. His lieutenant cleared his throat and I turned around and said good morning. He ( the Admiral) asked when we painted the grass and I replied two days ago. The lieutenant didn't know what we were talking about and the Admiral explained even though the grass is watered there were some areas that never reached the nice green of manicured lawns so we painted it green. He was a former commanding officer and had to make sure that was done during his time. The lieutenant also couldn't understand my casual attitude and the Admiral points to my "cookie" on my uniform two years prior I worked for the Secretary of Defense, Les Aspen, and the Admiral was in the same office as a 3 star so we were old buddies. The Admiral joked that back then, he delivered coffee to me and not the other way around.

I remember a joke from a 1970s Readers Digest like this:

A PFC is out at night and sees someone and says "hey buddy, got a light?" The other guy says "sure". It's then the soldier notices that the other guy is a general. "Oh my gosh. I'm so sorry, sir. " "Think nothing of it. Just be glad I wasn't a 2nd louie. "

MAGA's ego is easily bruised...

Military.com first reported Thursday that Col. Susan Meyers, the commander of the 821st Space Base Group who oversees Pituffik Space Base, had sent an email to personnel on March 31, just days after Vance's visit, saying his comments "are not reflective" of the base's views.

Meyers' email to base personnel was seemingly aimed to unify the personnel on base following those comments.

"I commit that, for as long as I am lucky enough to lead this base, all of our flags will fly proudly -- together," Meyers' email message to the base read.

As someone who's been taken to task for publicly calling out my leadership... being removed from command is not an unexpected outcome here.

That said, the real problem was Vance's comment that prompted all of this.

I would like to read the CO's entire email. Saying the Vice President's comments "are not reflective" of the base's views isn't enough information to assess whether she crossed the line IMO.
