"Gendron had appeared on the radar of police last year after he threatened to carry out a shooting at Susquehanna High School around the time of graduation, the official said. New York State Police said troopers were called to the Conklin school on June 8, 2021, for a report that a 17-year-old student had made threatening statements."

There are three things that I would like to discuss about this situation. First, why can't we get tougher legislation and enforcement to stop the purchase of guns by those who have made violent threats? Doesn't defunding police does just the opposite? Second, why is social media kicking off those who support the police instead of terrorists? Finally, don't you think the focus of federal law enforcement should go away from parents who speak out at school board meetings and instead focus on the cartels involved in human trafficking and drugs and those who have made REAL threats such as against a specific person or a "call to arms?"

Because successful efforts by groups such as the NRA have made adding teeth to any such legislation impossible. As others have said, criminals don't obey the law. How do you stop the purchase of a gun when there are loopholes such as gun shows where there is no need for any kind of identification check?

Doesn't defunding police does just the opposite?

Do the opposite of what, allowing people to buy a gun from a gun show without any background check?

You probably picked that up from Joe Biden. Joe falsely claimed: “You go to a gun show, you can buy whatever you want, and no background check."
Remarks by President Biden on Gun Violence Prevention | The White House

Federally licensed dealers at gun shows are required to do a background check. A person who was selling, say, one gun could go to a gun show and sell that gun to an individual. That would not qualify them as a dealer, but that person would still be subject to state (or D.C.) law.

Until we get a mental health system that actually helps people we are going to continue to have mass killings. We need to get our heads out of the sand, stop blaming the gun and start doing something about the person behind the gun. Actually enforcing the laws we have now and prosecuting criminals would go a long way also instead criminals are treated as victims and helped to go right back on the street and kill someone.

New York's laws do not allow private sales without a background check, except for immediate family members. So the "gun show" loophole does not exist there.

The gun was purchased at a store in New York.

Buffalo Shooting: Suspect Was Held For Mental Health Evaluation Last Year

Robert Donald, the owner of Vintage Firearms in Endicott, N.Y., said Sunday that he recently sold a Bushmaster assault weapon to Mr. Gendron.

Mr. Donald said he did a background check on Mr. Gendron before he sold him the gun. The report showed nothing. “He didn’t stand out, because if he did, I would have never sold him the gun,” Mr. Donald said.

Mr. Gendron wrote that he modified the gun with his father’s power drill, using a parts kit that retails for $60. Mr. Donald said that when he sold Mr. Gendron the firearm, its design complied with state law banning military-style features.

“Even with all of those safety features on it — which is the only way I sell it — any gun can be easily modified if you really want to do it,” he said.

I definitely didn't. Unlike you I don't hang on his every word.

Non federally licensed dealers at gun shows are not

This is also called the private sale exemption.[1][2] Under federal law, any person may sell a firearm to a federally unlicensed resident of the state where he resides as long as he or she does not know or have reasonable cause to believe the person is prohibited from receiving or possessing firearms.[3]

Prosecuting him isn’t going to change anything. He went in to it expecting to die.

At some point an adult conversation needs to be had.

How he had access to a semi-automatic rifle less than a year after threatening a mass shooting at school is absolutely insane. Even if it was a joke in poor taste that should disqualify him from ownership because it’s better to err on the side of caution.

With great power comes great responsibility, something he clearly demonstrated a lack of less than 12 months prior to this.

Mental health is also not the only issue here. It may have been the catalyst, but it’s fair to say he must have been exposed to a lot of vile opinions from influential people in order to form the beliefs he held close enough to his heart that he’d not just die for them, but kill others in the process.

Politicians and those given a pedestal to spew the nonsense ‘theories’ that lead to this sort of thing need to be addressed.

There is no fool proof mental health exam that can identify or rule out whether a subject will harm another person. Folks who are involuntarily placed in psychiatric hospitals know the things to say or not say to get themselves out. If they didn't know them going in, they will soon be educated by other patients once they get there. Early identification and treatment of mental health issues is certainly needed and can help, but it isn't a simplistic and total solution to violence in this country.

This boy was indoctrinated, and the signs point directly at all the talk on the right about replacement theory. Sure, the boy has issues, but the adults are on the airwaves telling people with mental issues (in the crowd) that their problems are due liberals, illegal aliens and minorities. Also, what part of this tragedy can be placed on the parents? After all, they are the first line of defense in raising normal kids.

They need to quit teaching racism in the schools, I wonder what this boy was taught.

Individuals can sell a gun according to the various state laws, at a gun show or not, which may or may not require a background check. If you do it regularly you become a dealer.

Racism is taught to children before they ever start school. Parents teach racism (by either being racists or inaction to teach about racism). This is why racism never goes away.

I know a bunch of teachers. They arent teaching racism.

This is just GOP button pushing to make sure the fires stay hot under their voting base.

To the contrary, parents in Virginia (a majority of whom are Democrats) have spoken up.
