Glory to Jesus Christ!
This Visitation Icon represents the ultimate of the Incarnation -- it is an Orthodox Icon. There is an earlier prototype of this Icon in Lebanon in an Antiochian Orthodox Church.
Having a spritual vocation as an Iconographer ( thank God for almost 30 yrs. ) -- I am a tool for the Holy Spirit. It has been through the Holy Spirit that his glorious Icon of the Visitation has been selected by many pro life groups besides many individuals throughout the world. We were also asked to place this icon at St. John the Baptist's birthplace in Ein Karem.
Not a week goes by that we receive wonderous stories about how praying with this Icon has brought people closer to their faith in God; how it has assisted them in times of despair ( a death in faith ) and in joyous times of life. We do have this icon available from our studio - Eikona Studios in Cleveland, Ohio. You may contact us by looking us up or -- I have just joined the Christian Forums. It is with great appreciation that Michael ( from our spiritual community of Icongraphers ) has commented on this Icon, and also Greg the byzantine and others.
Many Blessings....

here's an icon that i saw today that's kind of similar to the one in the original post:
Orthodox Icons of Theotokos. The "Help in Birth-giving" Icon.
help_birth.jpg

and another one i'd never seen or heard of before, the Milk Giver:

also, does anyone know the story with this icon?

The Theotokos Milk Giver is a canonical Orthodox icon. I do not particularly like it, but I understand the theology behind the icon. Icon #3 is attributed to St. John of Damascus and there is quite a beautiful story behind it. Icon #1 is very disturbing. Where did you find it?

I found this over at

Adventures of an Orthodox Mom: Icons of Panagia

and I had to share. I would love to get my hands on a copy of this.

Wow I know Nill about about icons, but my eyes and sensibilities do know good art. I love the colors, and the child on the right seems to be in a position off humble submission to the baby Jesus blessing him.

The guy peeking out from behind the drape seems to be a witness to the scene.

Eastcoast - the red veil/cloak and blue gown says that's the Theotokos or Virgin Mary, and the other woman is St Elizabeth the mother of St John the Baptist, and it's when they met ("the child within me lept" etc).

I'm not sure about the person behind the curtain, anyone know?

It is wrong to show a woman saint's hair in an icon with a few exceptions, St. Mary of Egypt being among those. The Theotokos is always shown with the veil over her head.

I just noticed that St. Elizabeth's hair is showing in the OP, but not in the model upon which it is based.

Hair is seen as a very beautiful part of a woman and thus in almost all icons the woman's hair atleast the part directly arround the face is hidden beneath a snood and then with the veil over the head. In the Wedding Feast of Cana the woman's hair is showing and in icons of Eve her hair is showing. There are times when the woman has long hair and the hair is permitted to be shown flowing out of the snood and veil. However, most Old Testament Righteous Women and New Testament saints have their hair hidden beneath the snood and veil.

We all know that if you like something then it must be correct.

I don't see anything wrong with it. Even after having considered both sides and reading the thread. It is a beautiful icon which reminds us of the Annunciation of the Incarnate God, our Lord and Savior! :) I really want a copy of it, too! :) <3

As I have said many times, just because you like an image does not make it a proper Orthodox icon. Iconographers are charged with passing on the tradition of the Church from one generation to the next and we are NOT free to add or subtract from that tradition. There are enough things wrong with that icon to make it improper and uncanonical.

Michael you've offered no substantial proof that the Icon is either uncanonical or incorrect. People have already shown that there is an established tradition of depicting the Visitation in this manner, and there is nothing heretical about it since the event is recorded in the bible.
