  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

We're nothing but primates, so veggies and fruits must be like 100% of our diet if we want to be healthy and our kids to be healthy.

Lol what? Where are you getting this info from?

Don't you mean 'internal' organisms?

So why don't Eskimos get scurvy? They eat almost no vitamin C foods.

Didn't I say "in the gut"?

There are sources of vitamin C in raw animal organs. It's necessary for connective tissue...so it's in connective tissue (surprise!). If you're interested in eating raw seal brains fairly regularly...you can stop eating oranges lol.

I'm willing to bet though, for hundreds of years...if not thousands...the Eskimo people's weren't living very long lives. You're talking about a harsh lifestyle that left a lot of people vulnerable to starvation.

If you want to examine the "importance" of vegetables and fruits to the human diet ...you need only look at which civilizations grew largest first. To my knowledge, every single one of them was agriculturally based...and while a few great pastoral societies existed from time to time, they never outlasted the agricultural societies.

But weren't the crops of those societies mostly cereal grains, as they are today? And aren't those that produce both vegetable and animal foods the most successful?

Yeah it's mostly grains....wheat and rice are two of the best things to happen to mankind. Animal foods and vegetables are definitely important...because the vitamins and fats were scarce for most people during winter months. I never said meat isn't important...I just think it's silly to suggest vegetables are.

Not unimportant, just overrated for the optimal diet.

There's a lot of information out there...none of it takes everything into account. I remember back when cutting all carbohydrates out of one's diet was so "important"...then it wasn't pointed out that most of the world ate a lot of carbs...they just were a lot more active.

The optimal diet is one tailored just for you, regardless of what anyone else eats.

I found this immediately upon searching under this very title. I have believed for some time now that vegetables (and fruits) are vastly overrated as being necessary for good nutrition as they are pretty nutrient poor generally. I hardly eat any and to eat five servings per day is unthinkable.
As long as you're hitting everything on the checklist of essential vitamins and nutrients, it doesn't matter so much how you get them. I take a daily multivitamin, partly so that I don't end up overeating to get everything that I need.

One health fad that people definitely need to get over is fruit juice. Consuming all that sugar in liquid form outweighs the benefits.
I wanted to start this thread because some have argued (in another thread currently running) for the necessity of expensive fruits and vegetables in one's diet thus opposing my contention that a good diet is actually quite inexpensive.
Interesting. Produce is insanely cheap in my part of the U.S. Much cheaper per serving than most other foods.

I pay $2.50 lb. for broccoli, and then toss the stalk. That puts the price right up there with ground beef.

Yep, and it was what they made with those cereals that is thought to be what made societies arise.

Beer was that product. Beer is the root of civilization.

What they call a "serving" is actually rather small. What I call a "serving" is usually about two or three of theirs.

I thought beer made societies fall down. ^_^

I cut the stalk up and put that in the bottom of the pot with just a little water. The florets steam, while the stalk, which needs a little more cooking, is boiled.

I think their serving is a half cup. Pretty small.

I'm a snob. I just eat the florets. The rats at the dump can have the stalk.
